Excellent review!!! Having worked on Norweigan ships in the past I really appriciate your humor! I almost spit out my coffee watching this review. I currently have a older Arcteryx Atom hoodie (gen 1) and was looking to buy the Montbell Plasma 1000 jacket for travel use. I'm extremely limited on the size & weight I can take with me for work. I'm currently working in the mediteranian but live in Canada, so I have to pack travel clothes that cover temps from -40 to +40, which is always challenging.

Hi John - thanks very much - get the jacket you wound regret it.
Seems like an interesting job you have - it with some difficult gear choices 😃

  • @frogturtle

Thanks for the review. I love this jacket, the weight alone makes it seem as though it is a gift from another planet. It literally feels like a trash bag weight-wise.
I have not done a lot of hiking with it, but as he said in the video down jackets can more so be for static wear in the cold. I’ve worn it in quite cold temps (a little under 20F) for shorter periods and moderate temps for longer periods. It worked out well.
    A few things:
    - Obviously it does NOT have a hood. On the ultralight subreddit, a lot of hikers said they prefer a hood on their puffy, but a lot also said they didn’t. The ones who didn’t said they had a hood on their base layer and rain shell, and also a merino buff and cap, or a balaclava. Ultimately it’s up to you. For travel and urban settings, I think this jacket is tough to beat. For serious outdoor adventures in super cold temps, I’d probably get something with a hood…but no hood might be doable with the right alternatives.
    - This jacket is delicate and can leak down. You have to be pretty careful with it. Don’t bushwhack in it, wear it under a shell. Read the care guide.
    - The Japanese version (as in the one you order on their Japanese website) is A LOT cheaper than the USA version. It also has pockets! However, the fit is a bit different. I ordered from the Japanese site, and I find that the torso length of the jacket is pretty short. It’s still wearable but I wish it was a couple inches longer. Read their sizing chart.
    - This jacket is not super warm. It is extremely warm for the weight (it really does feel like a trash bag in terms of weight) but it weighs so little that it isn’t necessarily a super warm jacket. It is certainly pretty warm, especially when layered, but in very cold temps for prolonged periods, you might wish you had something more robust.
    So ultimately…
If you are going to be hiking in seriously cold temps and need extra warmth around camp, I’d maybe look at a different jacket. Montbell makes much warmer jackets that are heavier and have more features (like a hood) but still light. If you want something that can be used for less extreme outdoor adventures, an excellent mega-ultra-turbo-lightweight travel jacket that packs down teeny tiny small, or a hoodless puffy to sport around town, this jacket f*king rules. The weight is absolutely mind-blowing.
Really, I think this is a great jacket to have. I’ll probably get a warmer one with a hood to really tackle the coldest temps. But this is still a very useful for the use cases I described above, and is a very unique product that satisfies those niches well.
    Hope that helps!

Hi Frogturtle thanks for your long comment, you have some great points and I agree - it all comes down to the weight - I bought this jacket for long summer hikes. I was on an 8 day long trip to Eemundsmarka wilderness area in Norway, and the Montbell Plasma 1000 was just fantastic - I have a link here to that video; 8 Days In The Wild:th-cam.com/video/lxRpRKPw3lI/w-d-xo.html

@@hanskirk-hiking9697 Oh thats a relief. I was sad for you that you got a hole in your beautiful new jacket. I am glad your jacket is still unholy! I agree the jacket would benefit in warmth with a bit more down. But If you want a bit more high loft (900 - 1000) down then you could consider the EX Light Down Anorak euro.montbell.com/products/disp.php?cat_id=25010&p_id=2301351&gen_cd=1 which has about 2x the down at 85g and weighs 215 grams total but its ONLY 900 loft - oh dear the compromises we have to make! I have considered this jacket for a long time as I love the combo of weight and down weight (almost 40% of total weight is down 85/215 = 40%) and I love the non zippered tunnel pockets. I also find this style of jacket with only a half zip to be warmer than a full zip as the front zipper is a big long cold spot where heat can escape. I also have tried the Plasma 1000 Alpine Down Parka euro.montbell.com/products/disp.php?cat_id=25010&p_id=2301257&gen_cd=1 and it is very warm and super puffed with 1000 loft at about 40% Down weight (96g down / 237g total = 40%) But it has full centre zip and zippered pockets which again I find are significant heat loss areas. All the best

    • @hanskirk-hiking9697
      @hanskirk-hiking9697  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes it is difficult with all these compromises 😊 the Plasma 1000 is so light - I will bring it anyway - also for winter hiking here in Scandinavia - it fits perfectly under my Arcteryex Atom Hoody. But for three season hiking it is perfect - and the weight savings are significant.
I have looket at many down jackets - the Plasma is my only real ultralight item - if I can resist using It for daily use, it will last for many years.
Another thing about the Plasma, is that it is very useful to wear wile sleeping, and the many long ours I spent in the the tent in the shoulder seasons and winter time, its very dark here in Scandinavia - this time of year. 🇩🇰💁🏕

Tried the superior down but it is just too little down to keep me warm. Did you consider the ex light also? How do you like the new copper spur hv ul2?
