Now go back and listen to this song again - all of you - with this in mind.
Floor sings at first as the voice of humanity.
Troy then sings as the voice of Eugene Shoemaker.
The asteroid field then comes into view, Floor goes into a darker colouring and we now hear the voice of the asteroids. "Worth the hurting, we're coming to join you" the asteroids talking to the moon and colliding with the moon.
    Brilliant.
I tumbled to the first two myself, but the third part had me puzzled until a Franciscan friar by the name of Guylain Prince provided the analysis which solved the third part. He's a big Holopainen fan and has a YT channel. His analysis is in French with English subs. He has three videos on "Shoemaker" so watch them in order if you want to do a deep dive into the lyrics.

Thank you for this. I had the same reaction: couldn't stop crying listening the ending. That emotional reaction is rare and it happens only in the front of some masterpieces.
Probably most of the fans know the story behind the song, but I still think it deserves to be written also here.
This song is the biggest tribute for Eugene Shoemaker, a geologist and a founder of modern planetary science. He studied craters on Earth and Moon, and realized that they were created by asteroid impacts. Shoemaker was the geology principal investigator for Apollo missions, and he also helped to train the Apollo astronauts that went to the Moon. He himself was a candidate for an Apollo Moon flight but was disqualified after being diagnosed with Addison's disease. Later in life, he said, "Not going to the Moon and banging on it with my own hammer has been the biggest disappointment in life."
Shoemaker spent much of his later years searching for undiscovered impact craters around the world. He died on July 18, 1997, in a car accident in Australia, where he was studying craters.
In 1999, as a recognition for his scientific accomplishments, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon by the Lunar Prospector space probe. His final resting place is close to the lunar south pole, in the Shoemaker crater, named after him.
The Shoemaker's urn was inscribed with a quotation from Romeo and Juliet reading:
    "And, when he shall die
Take him and cut him out in little stars
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun."
He is the only human buried on celestial body other than Earth. After his death, he finally got to go where he always wanted to be.

“Shoemaker” is a truly masterpiece of music, lyrics and performance.
Tuomas and Floor are not from this world.
When I will leave this world and I want to be accompanied by this heavenly song.
And I will weep and smile.

Originally I was a bit confused about this song because the subject matter was unknown to me and I expected the typical Nightwish sound. But after understanding the backstory, listening to it again, and paying closer attention to the music and Floors voice I am convinced that this is a masterpiece. Tomas is a genius at musical and lyrical composition. Then you add Floor to the mix and you create living mythology. Vocally what Floor has done on this entire album is astonishing. Many vocal coaches agree that not many singers, if any, would be able to duplicate and deliver flawlessly the lyrical/vocal arrangements. Floor herself said during a recent interview that she had to challenge herself to create the melodic structures. She is truly one of a kind. We are witnessing a living legend.

Great reaction as always, you are not alone,i cry always too, it's a very emotional song.
I believe that Tuomas wanted to introduce us Shoemaker, i knew the story but I never remember the name, now I am sure i am never forget it. An anthem to Eugene Shoemaker and Seakspeare's verse from Romeo and Juliet.
Laudato si it's a book who written from Pop Fragiskus the 2015 i think and it's a tribute to planet earth and not only.
All song is an anthem to universe.
I think in one episode of cosmos they said, that if one asteroid didn't hit the earth to take it place to solar system maybe didn't exist life in our planet,we are thankful to that asteroid too.
Great song 👌 from NW, they create a really anthem of Shoemaker and gave us a story about him and his scientist. Floor's vocals capture the magic completely and Troy help too.
I believe that almost all NW fans already loved ❤️ this song.
And with so many reactions new fans will be born with their new album 💙..
Thank you NW for your new album ❤️.

Thanks for the thoughtful reaction. Just to add a little depth to your great summary of the meaning of the song, there's a bit of historical depth to the "Laudato Si/Ad Astra" part at the end. "Laudato Si" is a phrase taken from St. Francis of Assissi's famous song "The Canticle of the Sun", in which he praises the air, water, fire, sun, planets, animals, etc. as being our brothers and sisters. Death as well. And the most notable line regarding this song was:
Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle:
in celu l'ài formate clarite et pretiose et belle.
    which means:
Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful.
The term "Ad astra" is used in a variety of places in ancient Latin writings as well as in some modern contexts. Beyond its literal meaning, it implies the accomplishment of something that is practically impossible or very difficult. The first known usage is from Virgil in The Aneid, where he wrote "sic itur ad astra" or "thus one journeys to the stars" with the idea that it is how one accomplishes the impossible, and "opta ardua pennis astra sequi" or "desire to pursue the high (or hard to reach) stars on wings" when Aeneas taunts Turnus in combat. Another origin is Seneca the Younger, who wrote "non est ad astra mollis e terris via" or "there is no easy way from the earth to the stars".
After the disaster of Apollo 1 in which three astronauts were killed in a flash fire that destroyed their capsule on the launching pad, a memorial was erected with the phrase "ad astra per aspera" which means "to the stars through hardships".
Thanks again and I look forward to some more great reaction videos!

    • @Fuchswinter
      @Fuchswinter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

That is indeed some fascinating and important subtext! Thank you for this!
The phrase contains a lot of history and emotion, I suppose that's one of the reasons Tuomas chose them for the most intense part of the song.

I would be delighted if you decided to do all the songs in the album. An in-depth analysis of both the music and the lyrics will be great. All the songs are so complex and different that reactors have different opinions, not even duplicates, which is amazing.

Please react to Trees of Eternity either Sinking Ships official video, or Broken Mirror and Eye of Night lyrics videos. I think those would be good songs for you to watch and give thoughts on. The band has a tragic story, which makes their songs even more powerful, beautiful, and tearful at the same time. They only got to make one album the Hour of the Nightingale. Hard to believe Aleah left us 4 years ago. RIP you sang like an angel.
