Eugene Shoemaker was a geologist and a founder of modern planetary science. He studied craters on Earth and Moon, and realized that they were created by asteroid impacts. Shoemaker was the geology principal investigator for Apollo missions, and he also helped to train the Apollo astronauts that went to the Moon. He himself was a candidate for an Apollo Moon flight but was disqualified after being diagnosed with Addison's disease. He later said, "Not going to the Moon and banging on it with my own hammer has been the biggest disappointment in life."
Shoemaker spent much of his later years searching for undiscovered impact craters around the world. He died in 1997, in a car accident in Australia, where he was studying craters. In 1999, as a recognition for his scientific accomplishments, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon by the Lunar Prospector space probe. His final resting place is close to the lunar south pole, in the Shoemaker crater named after him. Quote from the lyrics: "Now you've been tucked in
for eternal earthrise and wonder. A sailor through aeons." His urn was inscribed with the text from Romeo and Juliet (narrated in the song by Johanna Kurkela, wife of Tuomas). So finally, after his death, he got to the moon which was his life dream.

@@arturama8581shoemaker was a great and noble researcher whose lifes work will probably save humanity from certain extinction in the future. Sounds incredible but its true. Before he came along and challenged the scientific consensus, nobody knew that craters on earth were caused by massive asteroid collisions and mass extinctions. He alone presented his theory and proved it. Now because of him we have a multitude of equipment and eyes tracking dangerous objects threatening the earth, and developing ways to mitigate them. Without Shoemaker we would just be oblivious, going about our business until we, or whatever we evolve into, would be wiped from the earths surface like the dinosaurs.
Shoemaker really is that important, please dont desecrate his memorial by questioning and trivializing it. His remains were sent there because he had wanted to join the astronaut program during the apollo era but didnt make the cut. To honor him they fulfilled his dream for him.

You’re doing just fine, Kristin SHOEMAKER
This song was written for and dedicated to Eugene Shoemaker, the only human whose ashes were buried on the moon by Apollo Astronauts. Eugene Merle Shoemaker was an American geologist and one of the founders of the field of planetary science. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world.
Laudato si' is the second encyclical of Pope Francis. The encyclical has the subtitle "on care for our common home". In it, the pope critiques consumerism and irresponsible development, laments environmental degradation and global warming, and calls all people of the world to take "swift and unified global action."
Ad Astra is Latin for “to the stars”

Thanks for the great reaction Kristin!
Here's a little background on the meaning behind this song. It has several layers of meaning to peel back.
This song was a tribute to the life of Eugene Shoemaker. Shoemaker was a geologist and well-known as being "the father of planetary science". You may have heard of his name before as one of the discoverers of the Shoemaker-Levy (Levy was his wife) comet that broke up and collided with Jupiter back in 1994. Anyway, Shoemaker worked for NASA for many years and was part of the Apollo program as an astronaut until his being diagnosed with Addison's disease, which grounded him. Later in his life, he said that the greatest disappointment of his life was that he never got to go bang his hammer on the moon. He was killed in a car accident in 1997 while in Australia researching a meteor crater there. In 1999 a special urn carrying his ashes was attached to the Lunar Surveyor probe which mapped the moon and then (intentionally) crashed into a crater near the lunar south pole (which by the way was named after Shoemaker already), making him the only person to be buried on another celestial body. The urn was engraved with the Shakespeare quote from Romeo and Juliet in the video.
The "Laudato Si" and "Ad Astra" bits at the end were Latin, meaning "Praise be" and "To the stars". But there's a little more to it than just that.
"Laudato Si" is a phrase taken from St. Francis of Assissi's famous song "The Canticle of the Sun", in which he praises the air, water, fire, sun, planets, animals, etc. as being our brothers and sisters. Death as well. And the most notable line regarding this song was:
"Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle:
in celu l'ài formate clarite et pretiose et belle."
    which means:
"Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful."
The term "Ad astra" is used in a variety of places in ancient Latin writings as well as in some modern contexts. Beyond its literal meaning, it implies the accomplishment of something that is practically impossible or very difficult. The first known usage is from Virgil in The Aneid, where he wrote "sic itur ad astra" or "thus one journeys to the stars" with the idea that it is how one accomplishes the impossible, and "opta ardua pennis astra sequi" or "desire to pursue the high (or hard to reach) stars on wings" when Aeneas taunts Turnus in combat. Another origin is Seneca the Younger, who wrote "non est ad astra mollis e terris via" or "there is no easy way from the earth to the stars".
After the disaster of Apollo 1 in which three astronauts were killed in a flash fire that destroyed their capsule on the launching pad, a memorial was erected with the phrase "ad astra per aspera" which means "to the stars through hardships".
The Nightwish folks are not religious, but they wanted to convey a sense of religious reverence for Shoemaker and the people like him who help us gain a scientific understanding of the world. This same attitude can be seen in spades in the Nightwish song "The Greatest Show on Earth" as well. This reverence for the natural world and for scientific understanding can also be seen clearly in Nightwish's "The Greatest Show on Earth" which includes some commentary by Richard Dawkins.

Hi Kristin, nice nice again Nightwish!!! I´m happy! And this song is soo good! Floor´s voice in last part, I´m in heaven. I could listen that whole evening!
Like some has told already, this was about US scientist Eugene Shoemaker. When you have time, google his life story. That quote from Shakespeare is in his urn where part of his ashes are - in moon near crater - Shoemaker. His wife (over 90 years old now, still living) has said "whenever I look to the moon, I see my late husband there". I wish she could hear this song made to honor his husband . And of course I hope she would like also this song...
Narrator in this spoken part is Johanna Kurkela and who´s wife she is??? Yes, correct answer is Tuomas!
Have you ever done reaction to her songs? Very beautiful voice (she could be an elf :D ), mostly she do ballad type songs in Finnish.
I would like make one suggestion, to song what Floor just made. Or it is not her song. it. In Netherlands they make a TV program, 3 part series , telling about war children and this is melody from that series, main theme. Floor did it just few days ago. I put here also link to it, so you can do reaction to it - if you want. So it is not metal rock or pop..., made to TV series. But very touching (what else it could be when Floor sings it ?). Floor sing it in Dutch, but there are subs and you can get from there English. Actually, you can get from there 39 different languages! Made by Floor / Nightwish fans all over the world. Floor was really amazed by that, just in few days she got all those different languages!

    Hi Kristin,
Just to let you know that prayers and wishes are with through this tough time you're experiencing. I to experience depression and do take medication for it. I also have other methods of on how I deal with it. I like talking to people. I do go for a walk just to exercise and keep myself healthy. Have to since I'm also Type-2. And then there is the medium of music. It takes me to a good place from within. When I hear a song that moves me emotionally, it's relief that I feel and those demons that have invaded my mind is pushed out for that moment. I discovered Nightwish on Music Choice channel on TV. Ever since, I have become a fan of their music. I've listened to the whole album and includes the second CD "All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World" which is though only instrumental, it is beautiful and also soothing. This is how I cope. I hope this also helps you. My prayers are with you and God bless.

Hi Kristin! How's the heart? Hope all is well with you.
My take is this: For some unknown reason, it takes music like this, made by a Masters Guild of musicians like Nightwish, to make one realize how _small_ we are in this universe -- yet, at the same time, how magnificent, majestic and glorious this universe really is. When one thinks about it in this perspective, you can't help but be awestruck, and filled with such a feeling of wonder, that it seems it is almost impossible that we live on this Pale Blue Dot called Earth -- and not only have we survived on this rock, but we have _thrived_ -- and in the process, have learned so much about the place we call home, and our place in the universe.
Truly, it is a gift that we have the means and opportunity to learn some truly amazing and wondrous things, if only we would simply take the time and effort to learn them. We all could learn a valuable piece of wisdom from Eugene Shoemaker and others, should we merely choose to.
And Kristin? Remember, music can do more than you think -- it can help you bounce back from a rough day, can give you energy and the will to keep fighting. I know this, because
    #MusicIsMyWeapon -- and
    #MusicSavesLives

As others have said, this is a tribute to a famous astronomer. Floor said this opera part was the most challenging for her on the album. She did several versions of it but was not completely satisfied. She went home after studio recording completed and re-did it again with choir mixed in and became a masterpiece. Tuomas approved. This album is just beautiful but need to listen to it many times. The vocals of all three singers are throughout album and drumming is something. Please continue listening. The last song on album, Endlessness, is just so deep but dark. Marco shines on it. Another song that might make you cry is Procession. It is tribute so endangered animals. Floor voice is so amazing on it. Things are getting better and we will get through this time
