Peek into the past with Senior Curator Angus Patterson and Conservator Philip Kevin, as they carefully unlock a historic 17th-century strongbox. Originally used to keep money or documents safe, this strongbox has three secure padlocks with unique keys. Each key would have been held by a different member of the community (possibly the schoolmaster, the vicar, and the verger), meaning that the box could only be opened - and the precious contents accessed - in the presence of witnesses.
Watch as Angus transports us to the 17th century, introducing us to parish church security and what might have been kept inside the box, whilst Philip gently wiggles the keys to pop the locks and examines the 500-year-old woodworm damage - luckily without any beetle poo.

asmr at the museum is the best thing you guys have done
If you wanted to give your editors a bit of a break, you could release a long uncut version of these videos. I would watch every second of these experts just handling these objects or preparing work surfaces. I actually love the "boring" parts.
Not criticizing in the least, I am just greedy for more of beautiful, fascinating footage from all departments of the V&A!

I agree that I'd love uncut video, but the sound editors would still have to adjust levels, isolate certain sounds, and remove background noise to getting this kind of quality audio

I collect antique padlocks and the oldest one in my collection (complete with key) is nearly identical to the first padlock they opened. It's great to see what types of things it may have been used on.
Thats interesting, is there something that drew you to padlocks specifically or is it a collection you just stumbled into?
@@kirathompson3653 My collecting is focused in a number of different areas, including antique bottles, old marbles, antique pocket knives, old coins, rocks/minerals/fossils, antique dice, antiquarian books, antique watches, and more (with many more specific subcategories of collecting in each, such as mid-1800s soda bottles, Christensen Agate Company marbles, mid-late 19th century US knife makers, ancient Greek fractional silver coinage, Lake Superior and Fairburn agates, 1765 Stamp Act dice, 19th century and earlier first editions, fusee pocket watches, etc., just to name a few.) As you can see, I have interests in many things, haha.
Antique padlocks and keys have fascinated me for quite some time and I've collected them fairly seriously for over 20 years. I have a lot of interest in the artistry and craftsmanship displayed in some (especially with locks like the late 19th century story padlocks), I have a lot of interest in their history (especially with early padlocks and stuff like Scandinavian and railroad padlocks), and I've always been blown away by the clever and creative mechanisms and intricacy of some (all done in an attempt to make them more secure). Some antique padlocks reach near clockwork levels of complexity (and can have highly unusual keys).

It sounds like you have a large catalog of interesting collections, that could serve as material to use
for a show & tell ASMR channel :)
@@SpringNotes I love sharing my collections and information with others (and I do occasionally post stuff online on forums, etc.) I like the idea of having a TH-cam channel (or maybe even some sort of museum) someday. Alas, I'm currently too busy for anything of the sort. Maybe someday.
@@TrilobiteTerror on that someday, just start small. Like a short. I wager, it takes less time.
There would have been an open pouch in the box that the coins dropped into so when you went to open and remove the contents you wouldnt have to turn the whole box up and dump them out, you could just reach in and grab the pouch. This would also explain the wear patterns in the box.
Absolutely fascinating! We are so lucky to count on such professionals to preserve our history and the V&A team to bring it back to life with videos such as this. I hope there will many more of this kind.

3 padlocks on such a tiny box,having 3 separate keyholders,tells me the greed of man reaches the congregant and the vicar alike. What a way to keep your brother honest!
Well, it’s accountability really. But yes, greed/desire can be very powerful. That’s part of the message we hear in church.
The hell does it have to do with greed you twat just wanting to see what you wanna see, it’s a LOCKBOX
Don't forget the possibility of robbery. One person could steal the key but this way all 3 keys need to be stolen.
Also a hammer would easily be able to open this lockbox. I think the 3 keys are more for the appearance or control of power within the organization not just lack of trust/greed.
Think visual deterrent along with mirco management from upper management.....
This was also the time of indulgences. Common folk often paid the church for a form of certificate that stated they had quite literally paid for their sins. Some believed that this payment would keep them out of hell or purgatory. The church collected quite a bit of money from the poor for this as well as for 'bettering' the church.
How is protecting valuables greedy
Thievery has been rampant through the ages and security always tries to be one step ahead, but what a gorgeous box! Those locks turning!! What a satisfying sound! 😸👍

I love seeing and hearing the story of objects like this, particularly from such a period of time that is very storied. Seeing everyday functional objects and how they function is such a joy. You could tour a museum for decades but never get the same experience as this. Thank you! More of this content please!

I remember Antiques Roadshow called in a expert to open a very old stongbox (a long chest), it took hours to open and there was an unknown treasure inside. A newspaper from the 1960s.

Once upon a Time, there was the Lock Picking Barrister, and that's why this box became obsolete a hundred years ago.
The talent of the locksmith in creating those padlocks & keys with limited tools is amazing. I wonder if it was the same locksmith who created all 3?

The whole time I'm watching this, I'm thinking of this as major piece in a murder mystery set in the 17th century. The Lockbox. Three keys. Three responsible characters. Important documents/sum of money missing and a body found bludgeoned by the baptismal fount. Oh, if only I were a writer!

Thanks to everyone involved from the acquisition to the editor! One tiny suggestion from a guy who's not even into ASMR. There are many affordable synthetic AND natural materials (which can be sanitized) that would be better suited to display such amazing objects upon. Materials that may not sound so grating and out of time with the object itself. It just SOUNDS better if you're on stone or something that doesn't sound like a 'bag of crisps'. Please continue to share more artifacts and history with us all. Nothin' but love from the USA!

Looks to me that the box is not built from a solid block, but is coopered. Oak staves held by metal bands.
It's a STRONG Box and they handle it like its a Fragile egg.
The woodworm infection would make it delicate
@@stayforthepeelpronpls4774 Umm I have worked with a lot of lumber like that and it's not as delicate as you might think. made some very nice boxes out of wood just like that and they are holding up just fine.

What metals are used in the locks and metalwork? With the age of the item and the lighting in the video, some bits look like brass and others like ferrous metal.

Do you think the wood worm or beetle wouldn't like a wood stain if it was coated ? Like some sort of protection against the wood eater. I eas also thinking could the wood worm or beetle be transported by hand and coin like a germ. ? I realize old sunken ships are eaten up. But could a stain help prevent holes ?

Was the strong box secured to anything? How hard would it be to saw through its wooden body to access its contents?
I assume the locks weren’t to stop brash criminals smashing the box and stealing its contents but to stop the vicar pinching some of the money discreetly when he was alone.
