- Freiburger and Dulcich add V-8 power to their red 1971 Plymouth Duster, whose seized slant-six had seen better days. With the addition of the V-8, four-speed, a beefier new rear end, and a handful of other repairs, the guys get the Red Duster back on the road and rescue another vehicle from themselves.

I am not a mechanic but a car guy if that is possible. Total respect and awe for guys like David and Steve who can do stuff like that. Amazing.
Anyone can do this stuff even you can, especially on classic cars . welding, painting, bodywork, mechanical , engine building etc etc all you need is to buy some tools and some technical magazines or shop manuals to guide you. Most car guys like myslef learn by just doing it and by trail and error. If you are in the USA you are even luckier than me because you have access to plentiful classic cars tons of junkyard v8 engines lots of parts availability... here in Europe we have none of that, took me ages to get ahold of an American v8 4speed classic car but where there's a will there a way..
I started watching roadkill when it 1st started; it always blows me away how fryburger spits out car specs like he wrote the book. The man is a wealth of knowledge.
THANKS for bringing back some great memories, ,my DAD worked for Chrysler as a manager for 25 years till 1974, he quit because he said 1974 was the last year for the good Mopars and my brother and mine first burnout was done in my Moms new 1973 Plymouth v8 Duster.
its such a shame I would have given Freiburger our Duster for free as my Dad pulled it off road as in Canada the trunk floors and quarters all rotted so bad ,but it had perfect and the best all white interrior high bucket seats with floor console and perfect bumpers with rally wheels and v8 with 57 k on it
I think he scrapped it
I read a lot of car craft in the 90s when they started budget builds .. darts and dusters were always in there .. kind of the blueprint for roadkill.. love it 😎
THE BEST SHOW EVER! Never stop doing what you guys do!
Literally spent the last 2 days learning to do freeze plugs in a tb48 Nissan engine in the car.
Come to the first roadkill episode I see in ages and they’re doing one ahah😊
Long live roadkill 🤘🏼
and they cars they build.
Long live to the V8 swap
Ya those guys get all the fun
Long live 🧊
Why? It's just another over produced car show. When it started in TH-cam was when it was good
Valve float is just that mechanical rev limiter kicking in !
1970-1972 Duster is my dream car man such a badass car
Dulcich is the man! Freiburger and Steve are the absolute automotive dream team
The 360 is such an awesome amazing motor it makes horsepower without even having a cam in it!
I wanna be Steve Dulcich when I grow up
@@529xrst2lol. He can pay cash for stuff that you have to finance 😂
Love to see one of your rust busker either painted with a rattle can or even a paint brush. Be just too cool
That video takes me back to the early 80’s
Yeahhh❤❤❤ we need the full episode here in TH-cam
Brings back memories , back in the late 90's I acquired a very clean 71' 6cyl Duster and swapped in a 383 big block, kept the 6cyl torsion bars, replaced the A-body K member with a V8 style and used standard stock BB motor mounts, the only real issue was the "new at the time" 1 3/4" headers as there fit was not good, had to use a new style mini starter but several of the pipes around the steering box had to be altered. it was a fun project and eventually traded the Duster for a paint job on my 440 Challenger.....thanks Glen that was a great paint job.
Loving the cracked dashboard. 👍
It's called the soft plug or a freeze plug and yes it can pop out when the water freezes in the block. I have seen it happen many times. If you found one bad one then you should replace all of them while you have it sitting there and easily accessible. It's about $25.00 worth of insurance. You should take all of them out and do a complete power flush what's a garden hose or a pressure washer.
Cartridge roll the hole and seal the new soft plug with Permatex 3H
"Don't get it right, just get it running". Love that quote
You learn something new everyday. I also learned early on that they were called freeze plugs and that that was their purpose.
My Dad had the biggest Mopar car collection in our city 1929 Plymouth / 1949 Chrysler Royal /1950 Dodge 2dr Post/ 1963 & 1964 Valiant /1964 383 Dodge/1966 Valiant/1968 Plymouth sport FURY/1969 CUDA /1971 Dodge Challenger RT 383 34,000 MILES /1972 CUDA AAR TRIBUTE /1973 318 Duster/1974 GOLD Duster/and his fav 1972 SE BIG BLOCK CHARGER,and my brother had a 1965 barracuda /1966 barracuda and a 1968 D stock Dart and I worked at a Chrysler Dealership and had a 1969 barracuda /1971 challenger / 1972 barracuda, I remember in 1984 the farmer that bought one of the only Hemi Road Runners that was sold from us came into our dealership for a oil change ,one of our service guys wanted to buy it from him, he said he will never never sell it////
The booger welds on that engine hoist are something to behold
As a ford guy it's still refreshing seeing motor swaps that aren't ls swaps demon motor swaps
Fellow ford guy here and 100% agree. So many of the youtube car channels do the ls swap or the modern mopar crate engine.. another problem is most channels are heavily focused on chevy/mopar (like vice grip garage or uncle Tony garage or stay tuned) very little ford content..
There is good reason for that older sbf and big block ford are way too expensive and still end up inferior, thats why most old fords are chevy swapped. Ford did finally catch up with the coyote so the ford content is growing, but still not nearly as many cool old fords, mopar and especially gm made way more cool bodies to hot rod.@@davidgalea6113
Yeah literally, even though that 5.9 sounds like junk I can appreciate them getting the car going with at least some sort of unique and correct brand V8, wish old cars were in that decent of shape in northern BC Canada I’d be having somethin cooler than an SN95 as a project 😂
Yeah, about the only Ford stuff you see getting swapped into cars is either every last Mustang II getting harvested for its front suspension to put in a Deuce Coupe, or everybody and their mother running a nine-inch.
Or Coyote Swaps....
Glad you chose 360. Plenty of tire frying torque!
At least it not a 318
Pretty amazing how he can sit cross legged like that.
Freiburger and dulcich are hot rod royalty!
You need to have that steering gearbox rebuilt to eliminate that pull to one side. Trust me on this.
Always leave the top bolt out, love it
Reminds me of the old days wrenching on cars and modifying them to take more abuse, then go beat on them, and street race.... Love those times, and still doing it 40 years later!
Steve knows how cool an "A" body can be so put in a 340 + .030 and a 4in crank in one!
Love this build
This is exactly what I want to do to my 72 Demon swap from automatic to manual 4 on the floor
In Australia they're not called freeze plugs OR core plugs.
They're Welch plugs.
Welch plugs are slightly different to some core plugs but essentially the same thing. Invented by the Welch car company.
Excellent real world build.
Ya know, if only you and @ViceGripGarage could race'em. Tho his is a give away.
I'm putting a 408, a regular 18 spline 833, and a 3.55 8.75 in a 76 318, o.d. 4 speed, 8.25" Duster.
Woo, Chris Birdsong.
I’m having flashbacks to my brother’s 74 383 Duster. Direct-Connect K-member and an engine and exhaust that just didn’t want to fit.
just watched birdsong install your floorpan!
I wish they would pick a beat old car make and model that I care about to bring back to life.
When pops retired from military action and got a job with circle k he had a few dusters and demons that were pretty snazzy .
I a planning on doing a 440 stroked to 513 A body. Love it.
Nice speaker wiring job.
i wish i could work with them and learn about cars..... I really really love everything with an engine even if it doesnt runs
I had a 72 Dodge Dart -Demon. It had a Dart tag on the deck lid. Demon 340 on the fenders.😎.. four speed with a bench seat. Big thermalqaude, manual secondarys. Sure grip with whatever gear it had. It was original, no fake hood scoops, blue with black stripes. I wish I still had it, but it was a Michigan car and the rust got so bad the rear springs tore out of the frame etc. I didn't have a garage to even save the drive train. I had a friend sell it on a main highway. I would like to think it's soul still lives on in something else
I had a 96 s10 4cyl that froze up and popped out the freeze plug in the back of the engine. I had to pull the trans and flywheel to replace it. It was a pain but it wasn't cracked. Got lucky😂
I love me some polished headers.
I love that car!😅
Nice job on the car
That engine hoist is looks like drunk guy ideas became reality and it worked 💀
Referencing episode that people outside US have no way of watching 😂😂😂
I would take that rearend you took out so fast but you are promoting change so carry on
Should have left the manual steering gear box in. You could have just left the power steering pump on and block of the ports until you find an idler pulley
Hot, dang tamale!!
My old (1970) Roadrunner, didn't have power
steering, OR power brakes.
Instead. the 383 A833 DID have POWER!
(One of my worst mistakes, was selling it!)
stev
The Ruster!
Love that car
My dream car, I wouldn't change a thing, except maybe some mufflers.
On one episode, it showed you guys running a "steam line ?" from the radiator to the valley between the cylinder banks, What was that for?
Looks like me opening a can of beans .
I hate the evolution of the engine crane and axle lifter as much as I love them.... just weld another extension on until something lands on your toes.... :-)
I have seen multiple freeze plug come out with out cracking the block, or blowing up the motor,
I've seen bigger skid marks in my brothers undies. Lol. Jj. Love the show 🤘
Last winter, my friends 440 blew put a freeze plug and didn;t crack the block. up here in Vancouver BC. tho i have seen a few cracked block with freeze plugs still in place.
Can’t forget the rt Dakota it’s got the 5.9
Can you do something on dry dump oil systems though expensive but the performance an longevity is nice thanks Dave an Steve .happy holidays an be safe
The best show
When is roadkill coming to Australia to do the other half of the mcm cross over
Nice ...what rear end gears does it have ....the ratio?
Yes sir, Mopar Or No Car! Ⓜ️
***HOPING - that eventually the 5.9 will get some zoomie parts and attention as the unsung hero that it is...
Was there any interference between the power steering pump and the battery tray?
A freiburger let's race I love the car
why's there a spring on the brake drums on the new axle?
Please come back to Europe!
im doing this exact build but on a 1965 Dodge dart. im currently only missing the bellhousing for that 4 speed and a clutch to match it. i cant find it anywhere.
it's a welsh plug David Freiburger
Just curious will this engine kit fit on a 1974 plymouth valiant? Says till 72 but is there a difference from 72-74
Why didn't Chrysler America use the Chrysler Hemi-6 engine that Chrysler Australia used in the Chrysler Valiant Charger models from 1970-1981 ? The top of the line 265ci 4.3l had 302 bhp 225 kw .
👍 Right on.
I never saw this episode before. Does anyone know if he decided to keep it?
Birdsong will replace the floor pans.
you are in orange groves probably near plant city florida
It's just plain Cool....and I am a Chevy guy...must respect Mopar at least they got the firing order correct, AIN'T IT JUST AIN'T IT 😜 lols
So theyre releasing them on yt now? Hasnt been on motortrend long!
Everyone has dusters all of the sudden
Open toe sandals still get me
I'm working on swapping a 5.7 hemi into a 72 duster and I'm curious what you (or anyone) might recommend for a fuel pump and drive shaft? I'm keeping the efi as of right now.
.81 6 cylinder bars, no sway bar, NOOOO shocks.. I BET it wallows 😅
actually it does happen often so freeze plug name has a reason
Put some Ospho on that floor
Crazy you can get an rv with a 440 for $1500 back then 😂
i call it a welsh plug
Can I have that manual steering box? Im swapping out my power steering.
POR 15 is RUST kill ~ gloss paint
Is a 67 Belvedere with a bored and stroked 440 caged considered as Plymouth ?
That thing scares me a little bit .
Can you post the rear axel housing dimensions?
never measure the tailshaft length with wheels and car off the ground u'll get a measurement that punches the tail in on the gear box on full compression on suspension and kill gearbox/transmision
I beg your pardon I had a plug pop out an got fortunate for it not to crack anything popped it back in an my ls runs jus fine
285HP out of the 5.9L Magnum is underwhelming. I have a 99 Dakota RT and it needs more power.
It is real fast to 35mph lol.
285 is theoretical and fully fuel injected with the leaky manifold they have a bit of torque that’s it
