    My dad had a ‘68 D100 with a ‘69 hood and grille. When the original 318 got too tired to do much work anymore he went to a wrecking yard and bought a used 318. As the yard guys were lifting the engine out of the donor my dad looked at the side of the block and he expected it to say 3-1-8. It said 3-4-0. He didn’t say a word to them about it. Turned out to be a stout 340 that would light up 33” Armstrongs at 55 mph. It was badass. I’d love to have a D100 of this vintage for myself. Dad sold that truck but kept the engine and put it in a ‘67 Dart. I wish he kept it too.

    • @jeremyhanna3852

      Grew up in 2 wrecking yards never seen any manufacturer stamp or cast the engine size in the block there are codes on the block that contain information but need to be decoded and i promise junk guys no what they got they had code books before everybody but the dealer

      Bought a 1970 short bed step side back around 1985 or so from a friend that said the guy he got it from told him it had a 340 from a duster in it, turns out it did along with a 3.55 sure grip...

    • @NZMOPAR
      @NZMOPAR ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jeremyhanna3852 all the small block mopars i have seen have the size on them had polys and LAs all have 318 or 360 or 273 on them

    • @jeremyhanna3852
      @jeremyhanna3852 ปีที่แล้ว

      @NZMOPAR ok I stand corrected never really looked at small Block Mopar in particular no other manufacturers do

    • @jakematthews6982
      @jakematthews6982 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jeremyhanna3852 then you haven’t really looked at the driver side of MOPAR engine blocks. I’m sure the guys in the office knew to look, but the grunts in the yard that we’re doing the work just pulled parts as quickly as they could without much investigation. To be fair, the 340 had an iron intake, standard exhaust manifolds, wasn’t painted or anything either so it just looked like any other small block MOPAR. The donor vehicle was another truck too. Chrysler never put the 340 in a truck so there wouldn’t be any reason to go beyond a quick glance to identify big block or small block. The VIN would come back as it having a 318 too. It was definitely a diamond in the rough and a rare thing.

    A LONG time ago, my brother and I found a
    64 Slant Six version of the same truck. Granny
    first, and the same bent frame yours has. Except,
    my frame was bent more on one side.
    With the help of a Coke bottle, filled with water, we
    were able to idle at 90, yes ninety RPM. Later, we
    could get her to idle at 400 RPM, with a nickel
    balanced on the valve cover.
    Yet another car from my youth, I wish I still had!
    This 64 Slant Six Dodge.
    72 240-z.
    '70 Roadrunner.
    56 Plymouth Savoy, 318 Poly.
    '70 Dodge D-100 318 Granny 4.
    67 Plymouth Valiant, Slant Six, 3 on the tree.
    And, quite a few Yamaha RD400 bikes. The F
    model was my fave. It had an Rz350 water
    cooled engine in it. That thing was SCARY
    fast. Sorry, scary QUICK! Once, had my baby
    brother on the rear seat, for traction. On the
    backside of the block my parents lived on,
    (and this brother, on for more ballast, got it
    up to 100 MPH. Stopped in 50 feet.) I also
    used the front end, and the wheel. 2 discs
    on it. Yes, the back wheel left the ground.
    With that bike, NOTHING could beat me
    through an intersection! Nothing!
    steve

    Great Motor the ol 318 Poly!

    • @alertgasper
      @alertgasper ปีที่แล้ว

      lots of hot rod potential--Plymouth couldn't afford the cost to build hemis, so the Poly has a unique wedge valve setup, more inline like a hemi but no dome. that's why the valve covers have their unique sawtooth edge design. but it shares a lot with the LA engine line--you can make a 392 cid stroker with a 318 4 inch crank from Direct Connection, the problem is getting the heads to flow enough if you want high rpm hp instead of torque, but a cut down 360 crank for 350 cid wouldn't be a bad choice.

    • @jonathangehman4005
      @jonathangehman4005 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @alertgasper Those Poly 318s were Demon circle track motors in their day and those heads flow great. You just can't get much performance stuff for them. Mopar didn't modify them into the LA version because they couldn't make big power, they did it to make them lighter and narrower to package better.

    • @alertgasper
      @alertgasper ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathangehman4005 Mopar Action magazines just before the pandemic got into making a new intake manifold for them so we don't have to hunt down the 1957 dual quad factory intakes, and someone in Australia makes ribbed valve covers for 'em since apparently the Poly was big down there, too. But you're correct, after the 1958 recesssion in America, Detroit planned on smaller cars like the Mopar A bodies and GM's A bodies. Unfortunately Mopar didn't change the lifter angle from Hemi to Light A, but pobody's nerfect, right? :)

      check out the web, a lot of LA parts swap over. Like the stroker cranks. someone re issued aftermarket intakes for 'em, one is a dual quad setup. put that on a 392 cid stroker and your coronet will wow 'em at the cruise night.

    These guys are fricking hilarious: They take total POS's, insert ball-bustin' drivetrains in them, and lay rubber all around Dulcich's farm, and other places. I find this quite amusing. These guys are ACE mechanics, and put any self-described "mechanic"s look like nothing more than parts installers.

    You could try storing them with no gas in them every month or 2 dump bottle rubbing alcohol in the tank to keep out rust and water it just evaporates
