Farm-Find Rescue! Plymouth Duster Big-Block Swap - Roadkill Ep. 40

  • On this episode we present a new Roadkill project car: the Crop Duster! It’s a 1970 Plymouth Duster that Freiburger forgot that he owned-a result of multiple trades with a buddy, and at least 5 years of neglect in the dirt of a grape farm. Once he was reminded of the car, and with a 440 Mopar big-block sitting on the shop floor (salvaged from the General Mayhem ’68 Charger), it was evident what needed to happen. Freiburger and Finnegan headed up to the farm run by Steve Dulcich, editor of Engine Masters magazine, to drag the Duster out of its moss-covered indignity and attempted to get the 440 in the car and running, driving, and doing smoky burnouts within five days. Along the way, the trio did engine upgrades, butchered some headers, built a homemade driveshaft, cobbled together a used exhaust system, did some halfhearted bodywork, and executed other mechanical feats the likes of which you’ve come to expect from Roadkill. Then it was off to the chassis dyno and the drag strip. Hate to break it to you, but the fail in this episode is minimal! Thanks for support from MSD Performance and from Optima, the new Official Battery of Roadkill! Make sure to check out the new Roadkill.com.

Don't worry you only need about a grand worth of tools to do what these guys do :) It's not a cheap hobby! But tools last a life time and you can start off with more basic stuff and build your kit as you go. And if you get a job with no girlfriend or kids you actually will have plenty of money to work on cars! Really you would. Just learn from Freiburger, he lost that nicely orange painted duster for an engagement ring.

As I'm rewatching these episodes binge-style for around the 4th time, I've become amazed at Freiburger's father-like patience for all the antics that happen as his cars' expense. The man is a rock!! On the flip side, it's equally amazing that as soon as Finnegan touches something on a Roadkill epi, the damn thing magically breaks or dies. Truly magic I tell ya.

in the 80's me and my cousin drove a Duster 360, Man you talk about fun, we had to put in a clutch system.. the old one was shot. But back then, we did not have a alignment tool. so we did as good as we could. we ended up having all forward gears, but no reverse, But it was fast, we smoked the tires so many times, raced everyone who was willing. and it was TONS of FUN!!!!! And banging on headers, yup, I did that too, when installing headers in a 1978 Camaro!!!!

+duhjuh its most likely proprietary to Motor Trend. Actually a lot of the music they play in the episodes sounds extremely familiar to music you would here in the mainstream just that they changed the notes to make it their own. TV shows have been known to do this as it brings back memories of familiarity of the subconscious. Sounds a bit far fetched I know but studies have been done.

I would LOVE to see an unorthodox build on Roadkill where they do something crazy and ditch the V8 for a Slant 6 build with a trubo and nitromethane or Turbo Blue. You have to excuse me because I speak my mind when I enjoy something like Roadkill, but I see V8 swaps all the time, I just want something different like a straight 6 build in an old muscle car or something weird like that. Amazing show guys! Happy to have been around since the 2nd episode!

Fantastic. Old school mechanicking with the mistakes showing, getting Mopar beaters up and running, entertaining commentary, this video has it all. I wonder when Dulcich finds the time to run his grape farm, but what a hoot (setting aside the blood, sweat, and tears of a days-long rebuild) this must be to have it all come together.
Best lesson learned? Always read the instructions first.
