  • We spend some time with the Prairie Dogs and set them up with a new enclosure upgrade. Our female is a little touchy lately and it's right about breeding time for them, are we going to get lucky with some prairie dog pups? LET'S HOPE!

    Treat them like you love ❤️ them by letting them out of the cage daily….they experience a sense of freedom….they already know the cage is there home make it more like a home than captivity…..They can learn to coexist and not totally destroy your home….
    Just takes love ❤️ time and patience….make them feel like part of the family by letting them explore beyond the cage…..
    Prairie dogs aren’t meant to be caged animals😢
    She also need things and materials to burrow and nest in😊😊😊❤❤❤
    Yep they need the wheel keeps them in motion and blow off steam plus it’s great exercise which helps them sleep well😊😊😊❤❤❤❤

    i give my pd boy cardboard boxes and old clothes to shred, and he likes that alot. i've always had just one pd at a time, and i don't believe it's always best to have two if you can give that one alot of attention. my pd boy sleeps next to me in bed most nights.

    There is a TH-cam famous Prairie DOG. When he hears his name being called.. he stands up on his hind legs and Barks back!! It is so cute. He has free range in the house. He also had "his house " that he comes and goes as it wishes. They have Wheel for him to run on.. it looks just like a satellite dish!! I'll get the name if ya want to check it out. Yours just love their new crib! I can tell!.. I found it. It's Poppy the prairie do😊g

    I've got a pair living in my steel yard.under a pile of rock. They are large. They have black butts and darker brown fur. I spot them on the weekend mostly when no one else is here. So I put out some cheerios and banana chips.. along with a few carrots to see if they'd eat them. I feel kind of bad for them because all the prairies around here are being plowed under to make clostruphobic town home by the thousands.

    And one more - how do you keep them away from furniture?

    I’m just seeing this video now but what a nice upgrade, great job! Have you considered solid stairs from each level instead of the wire or maybe covering the wire with a solid surface. I’ve heard that maybe better for their lil feet but just an idea. Thanks for sharing the video!

    This man clearly cares greatly for his beloved companions but this video kills me. So many people are going to see this and think it’s appropriate to keep prairie dogs in wire cages. This is absolutely the last place they should be kept. An appropriate enclosure for this kind of animal would be the size of that entire room and have several feet of substrate suitable for digging and creating burrows as prairie dogs are burrowing animals and have a strong instinctual need to burrow. An environment which doesn’t allow them to engage in this natural behavior causes a great deal of stress and can lead to anxiety and depression. They also need a very large exercise wheel. A 12” wheel is suitable for an animal approximately the size of a Syrian hamster. They must be able to run with their feet flat on the wheels surface - if the wheel is too small it will cause the animal’s back to bow leading to painful back problems. For a good example of an appropriate size wheel for a prairie dog check out Prairie Doug’s TH-cam channel. Doug has a fantastic wheel. The part about them being highly social animals is 100% accurate, particularly the part where he says keeping a single prairie dog is essentially torture. Please, for the love of all pets research an animal’s needs and seriously think about whether or not you can meet those needs before getting any animal. They depend on us for EVERYTHING and deserve the best care.

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where do you keep your prairie dogs at? Do you know what their periods of activity-inactivity are? Do you know how much attention and activity they get? There will always be the "but in the wild" group talking about unrealistically sized enclosures. The fact is that when an animals basic needs are met and supplemented with daily interaction and enrichment they live much longer, healthier happier lives in a stable environment where they aren't prey for nearly every carnivore in their natural habitat. There is a reason their lifespan in captivity is triple that of in the wild. I wouldn't suggest letting this video "kill you" too much because in the wild these animals would have been digested long ago.

    • @Tara1978Tara
      @Tara1978Tara 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IntrepidExotics - not sure where the “in the wild” comes into anything. My original comment didn’t include anything about wild vs captive prairie dogs. My comment was about people keeping prairie dogs in wire cages which are too small and lack opportunity for them to burrow. Wire cages can also damage their teeth when a human underestimates their need for interaction and enrichment (just as they likely underestimated their need for adequate space by putting them in a too small cage). All animals kept In captivity deserve the space and ability to engage in their natural behaviors which help them feel happy and safe, such as burrowing. Since you brought up wild vs captive prairie dogs the reason captive prairie dogs live three times as long as wild ones is because they’re not being preyed on by other wild animals not because people are providing them with everything that makes a prairie dog happy (I regularly see prairie dogs on TH-cam in cages too small to humanely keep a hamster in). All captive animals deserve the best, not just adequate.

      @@Tara1978Tarayou make valid points. I’ve watched another video of someone who has a pet prairie dog. I think she was a rescue. They say in every single video that prairie dogs don’t make good pets b-c of how high maintenance they are. I think that’s a responsible thing to communicate. Since they are so cute people might not realize the time & energy involved in caring for them. Plus they talk about how destructive prairie dogs are.
      I’m sure this guy has time & space for these 2 since this is what he does (I hope he lets them out), but he makes it look easy and it’s not. People might get the wrong idea about the care for them.
