Informative video. Here is a heads up from personal experience. My wife and I were given a Texas Prairie Dog by a pet shop (long story) back in 1990. I called Hershey Park's Zoo America and was put in touch with "Dale" who educated me as to the needs of Prairie Dogs. I bought a 55 gallon deep hex shaped aquarium which I filled with cedar shavings. Then I made a custom three foot tall heavy gauge wire top... with a padlocked door. Elvis was not raised in captivity and so I had to wear thick welders gloves until Elvis adopted us as a bite from a Prairie Dog will go through bone. When we came home, if Elvis was topside he wanted to be held and played with. Prairie Dogs do not smell like ferrets and are extremely social animals. If you sneeze or cough don't be surprised if your Prairie Dogs barks. They can also burrow into a couch in less than thirty seconds... I know.

Until I saw your prairie dogs in another video, I too had no idea they could be & are pets. She's sooooo adorable! It was just perfect at the end when you said "if you have any questions about prairie dogs..." & she stood up straight & turned towards the camera! Also thought the look the white fluffy cat had on its face while looking at pepper (I think that's her name, I'm sorry if I misheard!) was too funny! That, what the heck is that thing, look was great.
I live near a family park and in the last 2 months I think I've seen over 100 prairie dogs searching for food and playing in the park. They seem to love running all over the park unless they see a bird flying overhead, Then they head for their burrows. I really enjoy watching them.
About two weeks ago, I searched the Internet for what kind of food they might like, and unfortunately, someone recommended giving them nuts to eat. I've been trying to find unsalted --plain nuts for them and never knew that they liked hay, small amount of oats, carrots, apples, romaine lettuce and celery, and some corn on the cog. Did I do something wrong by feeding them nuts with some small bits of pineapple and dried bananas? I will stop giving them those foods.
Now, I will do my best to feed them the correct food. They are so cute and always seem to bring some happiness to my life. Thank you for setting me straight on what they should eat.
Could you tell me what kind of hay did you recommend?

There is a prairie dog "town" where I live. I love going out there and watching them-the babies are unspeakably cute💙
Unfortunately, people around here consider them pests! I am concerned about them disrupting and destroying even more of the doggies' home.

You are awesome. My girlfriend and I rescue mainly reptiles. A friend of ours just got himself into a situation where we had to take on some of his pets. One of them is a prairie dog! We are looking up as much info as we can. She is captive bred and so so sweet. We're in love already. Thank you for your care guide!

@@averielamb3057 In Switzerland 40 m2 is the minimum required. You only can own them when you first have the permission and secondly work professionally with animals. I know different countries different laws. But still, there is a reason why the consider so much space for them. For chinchillas it is 0.75 m2, slightly different. Also there is a association in Germany who takes rescue prairie dogs who says a private person can never give the amount of space and care they need. It is not a pet in first place.
I wouldn’t say easier, i would just say it’s different care for different types of animals.

They are not legal in all states, but they are in quite a few. And for some people, they make good pets.

Happy Tails do i need to have two prairie dogs or can it go with just one.
The best thing to do was the any type of animal is to get two cages to start off with , and put them right beside eachother . If they get along , then place both of them in a larger cage .

Also how do you litter train a prairie dog??? My 12 week old boy urinates and defecates all over his cage in food bowls, bedding, and just everywhere.... can't seem to figure it out.
I have tried a corner litter box with Care fresh and I have tried hay and I have tried an empty box and I've tried lining with plain paper and I've tried shredded paper -no success. I also tried a tunnel-like thing with all of the above inside and still not working...

+Armored Wings In the house that would turn into a disaster pretty quickly! And no they don't need it, the blankets act as a burrow for them. When kept outside though, they are given about 3 feet of dirt to dig in!
