I have completely replaced all of the soffit on my house, but I first removed the old wooden soffit for increased ventilation. The way this was done it looks to me that it would actually greatly reduce the amount of ventilation to the attic. Here in central Florida attic ventilation is of great importance due to the heat and high humidity.
I know this comment is old but I am having a contractor do my soffit and they are doing it like he is in the video. However they are cutting holes into the old wood and then covering it with vinyl soffit pieces that are all perforated. When I saw the way they were doing it I was frustrated because I thought they would take the wood out completely. But I talked to them and they said this how they do it and the wood needs to be there. So the other option would have been to take down all the wood and replace it which would cost way more.
Moms house has rotten fascia and soffits. Here in Florida I’ve been told that the wood needs to be pulled off. But when the last roofer 21 years ago just put aluminum soffits over the wooden vented ones. So this time around, all that’s needed is pull old soffits off and apply aluminum or vinyl?
Good video and to the point. I have some rotted timber facia and didn't even think to go with aluminum facia and put on soffits on top of the existing ones so this definitely made me think outside the box.
If you did this is a northern climate, you will likely have ventilation issues. The aluminum soffit has its ventilation spread over a large area, when only adding perforated soffit over areas that have ventilation holes it will likely restrict airflow. Potentially leading to overheating attics, or frost and condensation issues causing attic rain.
Yup, I was so confused about 8 1 inch holes equals an entire 8”x16” vent. I really never considered leaving the plywood soffit panel in place but I just might; while making sure to allow for larger vents
That's great if you already have plywood in place. My soffit is shot so it must come down. I'll probably have to replace some termite eaten rafter tails as well.
0:56 I might reuse my gutter. I already took mine down. When my nail was stuck I used another hammer to knock into the first one or a crowbar to loosen the nail with out damaging the gutter
We use a pilot drill you don't need a real heavy duty drill motor can fit in your back pocket more like a screwdriver electric screwdriver with a drill bit on it that works perfect
I am looking for a video that takes the soffit down so we can add hurricane clips to the rafters and sill plate. This is a big deal in the state of Florida. We’re losing our insurance because of wind mitigation. All rafters had to be tied with metal clips to the sill plate nails don’t work..
I haven't stumbled across a video showing this in detail. I have some family in Florida but I'm not near the ocean so I won't be doing anything like that anytime soon. there are so many types of soffit its hard to give advice without seeing it in person. I would try reddit for this type of question to be honest. there is probably some type of Florida construction or hurricane construction type of subreddit
@@diylevelupyourhouse7441Out of my whole house soffit I have about 10 ft on the back porch where the soffit was cut maybe a 1/4 in to short and does not hold in the lip of the inner channel to keep it from sagging. Any idea of a easy fix without tearing that 10 ft section out and replacing it with little longer pieces. I don’t want to do that because the other sides are screwed in and are covered with the fascia trim.
Im sure you can get some different sizes depending on where you look. where I got this they only had one length but different widths. If you have time you can generally special order about anything you want. No matter what you do if you have any bad rot you should cut it out and patch it in with some new wood. then put some aluminum over top of wood that is going to last a long time

Why did the gutter need to come off? Why nail it to bottom of the fascia and not to the soffit? Cant this be done?

Does the aluminum fascia all come in the same size? I have wood fascia that has some rot and am thinking about changing it with aluminum
