With the SUV and Crossover market still currently on the rise in America, Hyundai knew it was time to completely redesign their Santa Fe Sport in order to attract more appeal to their 5-passenger mid-size family crossover. Despite the Santa Fe’s sales figures increasing at a steady rate, many of its (direct and indirect) competitors (such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Chevy Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Kia Sportage, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, Subaru Outback, Dodge Journey, and more) have been getting quite drastic updates recently. As a result, Hyundai decided to jump onto that bandwagon and produce an all-new model of their first-ever and best-selling SUV in America.

We currently own a 2015 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T Ultimate. We have been so pleased with the car - we are replacing an aging Honda CRV with another Santa Fe! On of the best in-depth car comparison videos I have ever seen! After watching your video I now feel very confident in my knowledge of buying a new Santa Fe. The strong point of Hyundai over Honda is 10 year power train warranty!

I was really debating that point of Hyundai vs honda. In N.America, the hyundais dont last long, infact in canada hondas are more popular than hyundais due to their strong drive train
This was by far the best car comparison video I have ever seen on youtube. I found this video extremely helpful because I am trying to decide between the two. Keep up the good work!
Some people don't understand why some manufacturers are placing side mirrors on the doors, as they were prior to the 1980s. You can see how much of a blind spot is reduced with the mirror on the door, especially for short drivers who are more likely to be affected by this while turning a corner and hitting a pedestrian or other vehicle. It DOES happen.
Thanks again for commenting, tastyorange! Visibility is absolutely greatly improved with the addition of door-mounted mirrors (with front "cornering windows")... Not only does this design cue look pretty attractive, but it also makes maneuvering in tight city situations and small parking lots a whole lot easier. Honestly, I am glad that many manufacturers are making these subtle, yet greatly appreciated updates on their latest models.

@InnerGuide GO FOR THE 2.4 NON TURBO. Mine are both 2.4 engines. I can get 32 to 35 mpg.
Very smooth and quiet drivers.....

Since the Sonata got a mid-cycle refresh for the 2018 model year, I wouldn't expect too much to change for the 2019 model year. I really appreciate you commenting, Ricardo Martinez! The 2019 Santa Fe actually isn't too small of a vehicle... But I guess it depends on what you are looking at it in relation to. If you are looking at the Smart Fortwo, the Santa Fe seems like a mega-sized yacht. While if you are looking at a Cadillac Escalade ESV, the Santa Fe can appear a lot more on the compact side.

Due to Hyundai making the overall length (and wheelbase) longer on the 2019 model, it appears to have more in common (design-wise) with 3-row family crossovers in its overall dimensions (and the ratio of its dimensions).

I've been wanting a santa fe for a while. Didn't like 2019 when first saw it, but I'm liking it much better now. The 2018 is a great design, so hard to top it, but the new one looks more upscale comparable to an Audi, Lexus. Big improvement inside.

I was an uber passenger in a santa fe sport, and the back seat is extremely claustrophobic -- in addition to the lack of visibility out the windows, you sit very low. Im actually considering purchasing a 2019 santa fe. Since youre spending so much time with these vehicles, I would love for you to do a 0-60 and 60-80 mph highway passing power demonstration with the 2.4L awd spec, as well as a real-time city and freeway fuel economy video.

Yes. I actually already knew that Hyundai will be making an 8-passenger SUV to replace the 2019 Santa Fe XL. Hyundai projects for it to be released sometime in 2019 (for the 2020 model year). I didn't know that Kia would have their own version of that 8-passenger crossover, though. If that is the case, I can't wait to review both of them once they come out.

I like the new grille but I can’t get past the fact of how the heck are you suppose to change the headlamp bulbs since they are in the lower part of the bumper? Seems insanely harder than previous model

That's a great question, though... I wonder how you are supposed to change out the headlamp bulbs... Maybe the whole bumper will have to be removed? I'll definitely have to look in the owners manual the next time I visit my local Hyundai dealer in order to see the process that Hyundai recommends you follow.

For the most part, I like the 2018 better. I just don't like split headlight design. Never really appealed to me. I also don't like how they are moving the front and rear turn signals to the bottom. I think it should be closer to the top where other drivers can see it easily and won't be easily blocked. Great review though!
I totally understand the reasoning behind your opinion. The split headlight design is definitely on the polarizing side, but I actually find it to be relatively attractive looking. In preview pictures, I wasn't a huge fan of the layout, but after spending a whole day with the 2019 Santa Fe, the design began to grow on me. Also, the unique placement of the rear turn signal indicators may be more convenient if they were mounted higher on the tailgate, but by Hyundai mounting them in the lower fascia they look more stylistic and (Kona-like)... Which is sort of the new direction that Hyundai is experimenting with on their latest crossovers. All in all, though, vehicle design preferences are very subjective.

This is because Hyundai is planning on dropping the Santa Fe XL nameplate for 2020 (it's only supposed to be a temporary 1-year name). Hyundai will then replace the Santa Fe XL with an all-new vehicle called the Hyundai Palisade. The Palisade will be a 3-row 8-passenger crossover SUV, that will be completely new from the ground up.

Thanks for checking this comparison review out, Eric S Fisher! I will try to conduct a review of the 2018 Ioniq, but I will probably wait for the 2019 model. Especially, since we are approaching the end of this year, and Hyundai hasn't made any drastic changes to the 2018 model (in comparison to the 2017 model). The only difference was Hyundai adding the availability of the Plug-in Hybrid version of the Ioniq. I hope you understand my reasoning behind this.
Nevertheless, I am expecting Hyundai to make some subtle updates for the 2019 model year. So, definitely stay tuned. I actually have some really cool reviews planned for the near future, too. I absolutely cannot wait for you to see them! 😉

Does the Santa Fe come with heated exterior mirrors? I have a 2018 Santa Fe Ultimate but I don’t think I have the heated mirrors?. Seems weird that I don’t have it but maybe I do. If I do, I don’t know how to turn it on or perhaps it’s not working.
Hi there, Charles! Yes! The new current generation (2019 & 2020) Hyundai Santa Fe comes equipped with heated exterior mirrors on the SEL and above trim levels.
Also, your 2018 Santa Fe Ultimate most likely has heated exterior mirrors. Hyundai interestingly enough doesn't label these mirrors with a defrost logo, but when equipped, they turn on in tandem with your rear window defroster. Also, they both are programmed to time out at the same time (after about 20 minutes).

DriveAndBeDriven a big thank you for informing me about how to defrost my mirrors. Actually, I feel rather stupid now. LOL. My 2018 Hyundai Ultimate 2,0 turbo is one nice SUV. Fully loaded, has everything. I am really spoiled but it’s been one of my best vehicles I have owned. TheSUV is not too small or two big. I live in San Francisco Bay Area in California. Our traffic is a nightmare at times. It’s so easy to park in small places too.
If both of these models are presented with no reference to the 2018 as the older model, I would say that the 2018 is definitely outclassing the 2019 in design. The new grill design of the 2019 doesn't look much of an improvement in terms of appeal. It rather goes backward in style.

Hyundai altered the design of this vehicle quite a bit, but personally, I believe Hyundai has enhanced the styling (making it overall a more appealing looking vehicle). At first, I wasn't "100% onboard" with Hyundai's new front fascia design, but now that I spent a whole day with the 2019 model, the design began to really grow on me.

No problem! Thanks so much for your comment. Unfortunately, I have not had either of these vehicles on a long-term basis to honestly report reliability, but J.D. Power conducts an expected reliability/dependability test for many models every year. According to them, the Hyundai Santa Fe has received a very respectable 4 out of 5-star rating for both the 2017 and 2018 models.

All in all, though, I like the more refined styling of the 2019 model a bit more. Especially from the interior... Everything is more logically laid out and more upscale looking in my opinion.

디자인만보면 개인적인 시각이지만 내 생각엔 일단 헤드램프와 데이라이트가 분리된 컴포지트 타입 램프 디자인을 너무 싫어하기에 외관만보면 2018 싼타페를 더 선호하게 된다. 어차피 8단 자동변속기 올렸다는데 가속력이나 연비를 보면 생각보다 크게 달라졌다는 느낌도 안들고 가격은 생각보다 상승했으니 메리트가 크게 오는 느낌은 없네요.

The split headlight design is definitely on the polarizing side, but I actually find it to be relatively attractive looking. In preview pictures, I wasn't a huge fan of the layout, but after spending a whole day with the 2019 Santa Fe, the design began to grow on me. By Hyundai mounting the LED daytime running lights towards the lower fascia they look more stylistic and (Kona-like)...
Which is sort of the new direction that Hyundai is experimenting with on their latest crossovers. All in all, though, vehicle design preferences are very subjective.
Also, I was somewhat unimpressed by the slight boost in fuel economy over the previous generation. Despite, Hyundai adding a more fuel efficient 8-speed automatic transmission and a standard Auto Stop & Go functionality system.

Not a fan of the headlight assembly being low in front..just like the 2014-2018 Jeep Cherokee. If Hyundai had left the headlights up high, they would get alot more people looking at them for a test drive. I drove one and they have alot of content for the money, quite possibly the best value out there, considering the long standard warranties: 5 yr/60K bumper to bumper and 10 yr/100K on the powertrain. And the single exhaust has to go. Either do twin exhaust (whether real or fake)...or just hide the single exhaust altogether, as my 2016 Acura MDX does.

You forgot its use of high strength steel. Hyundai owns its own steel mill
IMO, I think the new Santa Fe will age better vs it's predecessor which was simply too overstyled.

I personally believe the previous generation (2018 model) aged really well over time, but the all-new (2019 model) seems like it will remain "fresh" for a lot longer than its predecessor due to it having a more conservative look, while still boasting bold and eye-catching design touches.

Thanks for commenting, TechGaming! In some areas, the 2018 model seems to be better than the 2019 model. But after spending lots of time with both of these vehicles, I can confidently say that the 2019 model is a respectable improvement over the 2018 model. That is not to say the 2018 model is bad, though. In fact, both the 2018 and 2019 model seem to hold their own gracefully by today's standards, and it totally makes sense why the Santa Fe is Hyundai's best-selling crossover in America.

DriveAndBeDriven what u say is true and lookss are subjective but the 2019 looks lot more overstyled as if hyundai is trying very hard and 2018 looks effortlessly beautiful and seem to age better gracefully!!
I totally understand where you are coming from, Tazwar Hossain! The 2019 model definitely is boasting a more polarizing and overall more prominent design language (similar to the new Kona). While the outgoing 2018 Santa Fe Sport has gracefully aged over the years with a bold, yet elegantly effortless design. This new design language will eventually grow on everyone as time goes on, but personally, I find it to be extremely attractive looking.
Withal, I can see why you favor the 2018 model. I believe Hyundai switched up the styling (and consequently "tried very hard") because they didn't want to necessarily blend in with the crown, but rather introduce an all-new design language (which Hyundai seems to be wanting to implement on their current crop of Hyundai products) to draw more attention to the Hyundai brand.
At least the interior looks (and feels) more upscale than the somewhat long in the tooth styling of the previous generation's interior (especially when considering the rapidly improving SUV segment)... All in all, though, if you have any questions regarding the 2018 or 2019 Santa Fe, don't hesitate to ask me.

DriveAndBeDriven As u said if I have quiries I could ask u, so really wanted to know what's the paint of mineral grey, that's not the colour I officially have right now but Where I live in it's quite cheap to repaint with proper, high quality paint, if u think the dealership can help me, it can't as me don't get mineral gray in Bangladesh, if u could plz help me out to find the exact 100% official paint code!
DriveAndBeDriven I need to paint it cuz the place where I work in I think there were some cement construction work going and a lot of this flew into my paint which will cost almost as much as a full redone paint, and I find the Santa Fe in mineral gray very beautiful!
I have sante fee sport 2018 but like new one

Yay... real hood struts!!! And easier to see out back. The present Santa Fe Sport has a beltline that is waaaaayyyyy too upswept.... ridiculous.

The "lower swept" beltline on the new 2019 Santa Fe definitely allows for increased visibility... Especially in comparison to the outgoing 2018 model. Also, I was extremely happy to see real hood struts on both of these SUVs.
