  • For 2019, Hyundai has made the decision tough for SUV buyers. We are going to compare a fully loaded 2019 Tucson Ultimate to a freshly redesigned Santa Fe SEL Plus trim level. What will be more important to you, all the bells and whistles in the Hyundai Tucson or more space in the Santa Fe? Let me share all of the details with you.

I just experienced my first long-mileage trip with my *Hyundai Tuscon*. For a small SUV going 800 miles up mountains (in Colorado elevation), it handled things like a boss. As far as a five day day packing trip, we took a 8-person tent, a 10X10 Canopy, two ice chests, two chair bags, and made everything packed, but just fine and managed. The Tucson has more room than you look at when you buy it. I still made room to see outside the back window. I have a 2018 Tucson 4-cyliner-turbo. I got 33mpg, despite the climb up into the mountains.

Nice pricing structure Hyundai. For about the same money you can choose between a fully loaded Tuscon, a mid-range Santa Fe or an entry-level Palisade.

You gotta admit Hyundai/Kia has absolutely been killing the market within the past decade and they're becoming the leader in almost every segment on the " budget " side. In Ohio, I see more Hyundais/Kias than I see GM's whole fleet let alone any other automaker.

@luvluca toni yea, H/K have always shared the same platforms and parts while Kia always has tried to be the sportier of the two. Personally I feel they have more style in the normal consumer market than most of the competition especially in the early 2010's they went for a very dramatic styling choice. If you look back to their early days tho, their style was very cookie cutter and looked like a mix of almost all cars on the market. These days they're doing great things tho, and it's awesome to see such a great seller in the N.American market that isn't German or Japanese. Their quality control has turbo'd in the last 10-15 years and I feel the only thing holding them back as a brand is their brand name itself. Good too see them finally get things going tho and people start to give in and give them a chance.

My first Hyundai was the 2002 Santa Fe V6 AWD. Last year I picked up a new 2020 Limited 2.0T AWD. The progress Hyundai has made in the past 18 years is pretty amazing. One more thing; The power rear hatch can run at 2 different speeds (select in the dash menu) and someone may have changed the speed to slower. You can also adjust how much the rear hatch opens.

Joe I drove the 2020 Santa Fe and it is in a word amazing. The comfort of the ride, the handling, comfortable seats, great looking interior and front of the vehicle. Also the technology is next level including the 3D holograph like bottom windshield guide if you can handle it while driving. Tremendous car. The one problem is the rear blindspots. If you have trouble with visibility you will be left pouting that you can’t have this car as I was. Noted that the new blindspot camera is amazing, but still won’t drive without being able to physically see for myself.

Due to the price of used cars, finding a 2018 or 2019 Santa Fe for under $24-$25k is very hard right now. I also don't think I *really* need that much space, so I think I'm going with the '19 Tucson Value trim. I like the overall style as well; reminds me of my mom's '17 Sonata SEL which is beautiful, comfortable, and super fun to drive! Nice review, thanks!

@Raiti's Rides - This is the PERFECT comparison video for me! I have been trying to decide between these exact options! Fully loaded Tucson OR Santa Fe SEL plus...? After driving them.. and measuring the trunk space for what I need.... I've decided that the 2019 Tucson Ultimate is for me. Living in TEXAS those ventilated seats are a MUST... plus always love leather over cloth (easier to clean) Also the Navigation is a needed option for my job. Like the front lights better on the Tucson also. I just hope to get better gas mileage than shown on the sticker. **But why in the heck can't they keep CD players in vehicles??** I have SO many mix CD's I love. (have a 6 CD changer in my Honda now) This was a change I could do without.

Stop the zonking please. I love my “new” Santa Fe FULLY LOADED Ultimate! I’m so glad Hyundai and KiA reworked their vehicles and are considered “preferred” makes! Hyundai for life! From a 2013 Sonata to a new 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate! I live in Texas. I’m so glad I chose my Santa Fe Ultimate because I was considering the Tucson. Consumer reports says the Santa Fe gets a much better score. However, Hyundai makes safe vehicles! ❤️❤️❤️

The 2019 Hyundai Tucson Sport is an awesome vehicle. Just purchased one after much deliberation. Also looked at/test drove a couple Subaru Foresters and a Mazda CX-5. We ultimately decided on the Tucson because we loved the look and feel of it and Hyundai’s 10 year warranty was so appealing. Best customer service by far at the Hyundai dealership as well. We spent more than 6 hours with our sales guy Andy and he was so knowledgeable and informative yet not pushy or impatient. Big shout out to Kearny Mesa Hyundai in San Diego!!!!!!!!

I agree when he said that the head lamps should be mounted on top instead of the front bumper. The head lamps will easily get dirty during the winter and it will be covered with snow with no doubt. One thing very important is that turn signal lights should be mounted way far from the head lamps so other drivers can easily determine the signal lights during night time especially if it’s foggy, snowing and raining. I hope Hyundai will reconsider the front design and give a facelift soon.

Excellent comparison! I have a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited and love it. I'm starting to think about upgrading as it's becoming a little dated etc. I've looked at the Mazda CX-5, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forrester, and Honda CRV. Yes, I liked the Mazda CX-5 but my past experience with owning a Mazda was not so good.
As much as I like the size and horsepower of my 2008 Santa Fe Limited (242hp), I don't necessarily need as much cargo now and been thinking about the Tuscon. Have you tested other years of Hyundai Tuscon and Santa Fe's? (the 2019 headlights are a deal-breaker for me) Are there particular years to avoid? The reason I ask is that I like the upper trim levels and may not be able to afford a 2019 Limited or Ultimate and looking at either the Tucson and Santa Fe I may have other options to afford the upper trim.
Thanks again for your comparison. Very helpful.

Love your reviews, but on either car you didn't talk about the brake hold feature (that can be turned on by pushing a button near the shifters) to where the driver won't have to keep his/her foot on the brake pedal after stopping...just go back on the gas pedal and the brake is released. It's a neat feature not found on many new cars (yet). I found that feature to be on the Forester, which I'm looking at in this category.

I just purchased a 2020 Tucson SLE, lots of features for the money. My wife is short and I am tall, so finding a vehicle that fits both of us was a daunting task. We settled on the 2020 Tucson. We were on a budget, what could we afford? We have always had Toyotas, but they fell outside of our budget. We wanted a good warranty since this would be the last car we'll ever buy. I, at age 75 and my wife 68 a peppy car wasn't important. Since most of our driving is within a few miles of where we live. I found the Tucson to be very comfortable, easy to drive and I love the safety feature with LKA, blind-spot alert, auto-braking, and backup alerts are very handy for my slower reflexes.
All in all, I am very happy with the Tucson. So far we are getting 30.2 on average with the 2.4-liter engine. Not bad.

We just purchased the 2020 Tucson SEL ourselves. For some reason this trim level does not have daytime running lights, at least that's what the dealer tells me. They said it starts on the Sport trim level. Can you confirm this on yours as well?

I know some people are saying that you should've compared the top trim level for both cars, but the fact is most people set a budget for how much they'll spend and this is a good way to compare what you'll get for the price and what is more important to you, space or tech features. I've seen both of these vehicles in person, and prefer the Tucson Night Edition. Also, I feel that the 2.4 in the Santa Fe is more 'worked' because of the weight increase. Though I do think the Santa Fe has the best cloth seats and wished they offered it on the Tucson as well.

I have a 2018 Hyundai Accent, I got a loaner Tucson due to Hyundai replacing my steering wheel volume switch. My Accents seats are very supportive, at least in my opinion. But, I thought the Tucson's seats were really flat and uncomfortable... It might just be the one I got. I've recently sat in the new Santa Fe, it was much more comfortable.

I was a hospice nurse for years....every 2 years i got a new Hyundai Tucson every two years and loved them. I took them through tornados multiple times, there was an extra inch or two of clearance that allowed me to hop curbs and go straight to front door in crazy neighborhoods. I drove my last one 800+ a week all over every kind of road and non road. I had all the extras, one things i would recommend. The rails on the roof is a must.
