    Thank you so much for this video! I'm in Florida, zone 10a. I'm growing a pigeon pea bush for the first time. I'm still waiting for beans to start. My plant is taller than myself, so over 5ft. 2in. tall. I've been growing her in a 10 gallon pot. I have absolutely no idea how to harvest or cook them or how to add it to my meals, so your helpful video is appreciated. Merry Christmas!

    This helped me a lot. I always use canned. So it helped me cook the frozen fresh ones I had

    How do you remove the hull? The hull is very tough

    • @AidasKitchen
      @AidasKitchen  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hola Shelley, The pigeon peas develop in pea pods. Each pod contains an average of 4 to 5 peas. The pod is opened with your fingers, which is demonstrated in the video. There is no outer shell to be removed from the peas itself. Visit aidaskitchenboricua.com for more detail visual instructions.

    First time I tried to grow pigeon peas. They went through two hurricanes this year. I live in Central Florida. I staked them back up. So you have to cook them separate before you add them to rice or soup? Glad I found your site. I would of tried to cook them with the rice raw. I may have planted too many of them 8 plants in my front yard and a 35' row in my vegetable garden. But I have Hispanic and Jamaica friends that can help me eat them.

      Hi Stephen, Sorry to hear about the hurricanes in your area. You will definitely have plenty of pigeon peas. Keep in mind that you can store them in the freezer as well. You should cook the dry pigeon peas (brown pods) first before adding them to rice or soup in order to soften and expand. However, with the green pigeon peas (green pods), you just add them to the rice or soup because they are much softer and bigger. They will cook rapidly in the liquid added to the pot to prepare the rice and soup. In this video, I am just demonstrating how to cook both types of beans if you want to store them in the freezer for future use. I love to use the liquid that I cooked the beans in because it gives the soup and rice a unique flavor. This is why I cook the green pigeon peas first but it is not necessary. Watch my video dated October 23, 2022 on how to cook rice with pigeon peas, using fresh pigeon peas from my garden. Enjoy your day!

      This was my first year growing them, im in north central Florida, the plants were so tall and productive! Im impressed and will grow these every year. Mine wouldn’t go straight up after the storms so I just let them lay, didn’t seem to bother them. Ill stake them next year

    The canned gandules already have salt in them right? I'm using bagged ones this year and needed this tutorial. Thank you

      Hola, Yes, the canned gandules already have salt in them unless it indicates salt free. I am glad you found this tutorial helpful.

    I have hundreds of pigeon pea trees that I use as a natural fence as the trees grow extremely fast. They're also very pretty. I have thousands and thousands of pea pods I use and give away. If anyone wants some, let me know, you're welcome to them.
