    My late Grandmother was a early settler of Southern California. I’ll never forget watching house “slip off” on to the Pacific Coastline and her saying “What did they think they were buying? That house was 5-7 yrs old, house BEFORE it was 5-7 yrs old, and before it the same until you get back to the 1950’s. ALL of them slipped the cliff..”

    • @Milesco
      @Milesco 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Earthquake insurance is VERY expensive, and Florida, as far as I know, is not a very earthquake-prone state, so the homeowners probably decided not to carry earthquake insurance. And given the fact that they were told by geologists and inspectors that the ground was stable, I think their decision was reasonable. I do predict a lawsuit against the geologists and inspectors, however....

    • @frankblangeard8865

      The house on the cliff is not in Florida. And the problem is not caused by an earthquake.

    • @Milesco
      @Milesco 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The video is misleading as to the location of the house in question. Doesn't say where the house itself is, but _does_ clearly say that the homeowners are in Florida. Poor journalism.
      And you're right -- the problem isn't caused by an earthquake. But the insurance policy apparently excludes "earth movement". To get a policy that covers "earth movement", you would presumably have to buy earthquake coverage. That was my point.

      If you have a home mortgage, that mortgage still has to be paid in full just as if nothing happened. Insurance may not cover any of the loss. One may have the right to sue City building permit department but chances are that may take years and extremely expensive. One may be throwing good money after bad, trying to collect by suing permit dept, geologists, builder.

      Another TV story on this house showed a neighbor in a boat offshore, looking at this, and remarking that they offered the previous owner cash to entice him to sell to them. If that's true, then a lawsuit might not have been possible if the house originally wasn't for sale and therefore the previous owner made no claims about it.

    We have an island that goes almost the entire coastal length of Texas. Developers built hotels all along the southern half. Every year, folks from all over coastal Texas donate their Christmas trees to toss out into ocean (they have to be clean, no tinsel, etc) to help keep the sandbars up. Sand is transported from inland (where it blew) and taken back out to the island and dumped. If these two things weren't done, continuously, the island would be gone. This is how nature works.

      Also by looking at the cliff that isn't stable rock in general. Kinda looks like a limestone or something. We have people who build houses in the city I'm in on a cliff side. They learned the hard way. It's a dirt cliff, the cliff was made from years and years of erosion from the river. It's just dirt. Nothing sturdy. A bad rain and parts starts eroding, That's nature.
