@@itande0551 I'm American and I've never heard it as a mocking or "victorious" song. The way Seth does it here, it's very forlorn and quite sad sort of in a tribute way.

Your voice creates instruments where there are none, and conjurs whole environments. It's a silly comparison, but I'm reminded of Tolkien- how Dwarf music almost magically moves Bilbo.
This song is about General Santa Anna and a fictional victory in Monterey or ‘Molly’ del Ray… But did you know, there is a Texan version of this song? “Santiana fled the day” “Run away, Santiana” “Napoleon of the West they say?” “Not on the plains of Jacinto”
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (Santiana), the worst president in Mexican history, he called himself Napoleon of the west since one time "he" defeated the French and got his leg blown in the same battle He also lost the American invasion of Mexico
A bit late, but this song refers to the 19th century Mexican commander Santa Anna, who most famously commanded the siege against the Alamo in the Spanish American war

@@GhilieDawg this doesn’t feel right… to compare this to a remix of a cookie cutter song (and thereby unoriginal and, to my interpretation, not worthy of this kind of praise); what I picture when I read this is that one cookie at Christmas that we all try to cut out (for me it’s a snowflake) that ends up crumbling when we try to lift it, so we just have to scramble to reshape it into something that resembles the original. If you think about it, every original poem, song, story-anything-is composed of words that have been around for hundreds, if thousands, of years… we hear words every day and each time they take on a different resonance and meaning. The same phrase never rings the same way twice. It’s also the same heartbeat (our hearts all sing the same beat as the music at the same time) that’s been around for hundreds of years, yet it feels different each time it sings through you. My point? Unoriginal can be original… and it often is. I stand by my statement.
Not a cover I was expecting but a cover I very much appreciate! Absolutely beautiful. I can only imagine the justice you and your voice would do to "Sniper's Promise".
"on the plains of Mexico" ... my brain has a different version of this line... on the plains of Ghana... idk why. but this one rhymes properly... and has been I my head the first time I heard the song.
The song is mocking the president of Mexico, Santa Anna the idiot who called himself "Napoleon of the West" and lost like no one in Mexican history, he got his leg blown in Veracruz and made a full military funeral to it alongside with statue
Seth outdoes himself all the time! One more reason I love him(: he’s passionate about trying to be better💚💚💚 I’m inferring that does translate to his humanism too.
@@menyou1443 His music does just keep getting better and better! I’ve gotten like 3+ other people obsessed with his music. Even my mom- whenever I see her after a new release I play it for her and she always loves it too. His ability to capture emotions and passion in his singing is unmatched! 🥰🥰
@@arche2460 it’s incredible to share such a deep emotional connection (if even for a moment) with him… apparently that emotional connection leads your body to respond identically to the music (sharing a heart beat, blood pressure signs, breathing rate, etc). How powerful is music! I don’t have many friends and the ones I do are unavailable, so that emotional bond gets me through the really rough days.
@@menyou1443 I completely get what you mean. I have some distant Celtic heritage, and listening to Seth’s songs I can almost feel that ancestry rise up within me. His music is so powerful it’s like you can feel the emotional weight behind the song- like you’re there, living the history that inspired it. That’s what I love about folk songs in general. They’re a form of living history, a way to connect with those who came before us- to form a deeper understanding of who they were, what they were like, and what was important to them. I wish more people liked folk music like this. I feel history might not repeat itself so much if they did, you know?
@@arche2460 completely agree. The connection between generations is one of the main reasons I keep begging Seth to sing (and support) Henry Joy. He’s forgotten and doesn’t get credit for his role in the ‘98 rebellion, which HE led with Wolfe Tone, but only Wolfe gets credit and love. It’s something I’m very passionate about because I want my man to be remembered and credited for dying for Ireland and being a leader of the rebellion. He’s just written out of history and he is mine. By my 5th great grandfather. Denying his contribution sometimes feels like denying my connection to Ireland… and denying the pride and joy I feel in my relationship with him. Like saying my family has no value or connection in Ireland. He died young because of this connection, and only crediting Tone (especially in Rising of the Moon) feels like invalidating his life, his leadership, and his entire sacrifice. That’s why I need Seth to sing about him. So I (and Seth) can know him better… so we can learn and remember who and what he was. Seth has the power to bring him back to life. To validate his memory and ensure he didn’t die in vain. I’m really passionate about that. I need him to bring Henry back to life in our hearts! He has the sway and the reach to make that happen. And I always say that about my ancestry! I say that Seth makes my Irish blood dance through my veins.
What do you mean ? That is a happy ending. The first rule to finding a good old folk song, is to count up the murders, suicides and general deaths and maimings in a song. There has to be a minimum of four before it's worth singing.
this might be my second favorite version of this song only falling short of the masterpiece that is the longest johns and skald version there is just something magical about the french and english and the drum beat in that version but still this one for just pure vocals is so powerful
But none of the Longest Johns has a voice that comes up to the quality of Seth's. I'd swear he was Irish by birth, though his surname is actually Welsh. And he's neither ...!
A bit of a pet peeve of mine, but isn’t the second half of the first verse supposed to be “Napoleon of the West, they say”? Seems to make the most sense to me that way.
