    I was used to The Longest Johns’ version of the song. It never ceases to amaze me how shanties can always sound good no matter the version that is sung.

      That's what you come to learn about stuff like folk music, its proper interesting because there is no quote on quote "original version" these folk songs would be sung by ordinary people and passed down through generations, all with tweaks being made here and there to have the multiple versions we have in the modern day. Folk music back then was all about unity and it shows

    Legendary as always, Captain Dagher.

    • @GPASG
      @GPASG 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Legendary indeed. But I think shantyman Dagher is a more fitting title, or seeing as he's on land and we ain't sailors, Master Dagher.

    • @SeanDagher
      @SeanDagher  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks Richard! I also wanted to respond to your comment about John Kanaka. I agree that it is probably a racial slur, and my version of the song is called "John come tell us" or "Mobile Bay." My version does not include that word at all. I should have specified in my other comment.

    • @SeanDagher
      @SeanDagher  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Gabriel, we are in fantasy land here. We can call each other any name we want, as long as it's not mean. That being said, "Master" is fine too!

      They (the Illinois National Guard) have TWO of Santa Anna's fake legs - the fancy one, which is in a museum, and a peg leg they captured a while later. That's apparently still in the governor's mansion.

    Could this song also reference to the siege of the Alamo? Santia Anna lost a lot of men in the battle and in the end there was a lot of hand to hand combat between the Mexican and Texan armies and the result was a victory for Santia Anna.

    The Czech version by the great Waldemar Matuska is actually pretty cool, you might want to check it out Sean.
    The French version by Hugh Auffray ain't half bad either, although granted, neither it nor the Czech one are sung as shanties.

    Fun bit of history: his amputated leg was buried and given a state funeral. As he fell in and out of popularity, it was disinterred and re-interred with... befitting levels of pageantry, according to the mood of the people doing the digging.
    I was starting to type the story my Texas History teacher told me in seventh grade, that his prosthetic was stolen by Texas troops during the Texas war for independence - but, lo! Some quick research tells me it was not until later that he lost his leg. The prosthetic was stolen during the Mexican-American war, by troops from Illinois. It resides there, and periodically today different groups in Texas try to claim it should reside in my home state. Which, is awfully true to character for us, I suppose.
