Devin is honestly one of the most talented musicians we have in our generation. He deserves so much more appreciation... His music might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it's undeniable that he is one of the most interesting and unique individuals we have in music today. He is a master at what he does. He's hilarious by nature and phenomenal talent wise. He's a special person and musician that's for sure. Kinda like a Dax Riggs type of special that's hidden from most of the world. A true gem.
@Melodic Concept the thing is, Devin isn’t just a metal player, and he can be very experimental as well. And I’m not even talking about his bluesy-ambient or punk rock stuff. He had this album The Hummer, where he tried to find frequencies that would make objects in studio resonate, he had album Puzzle that’s hard to describe in one sentence, I’ll just say that it’s driven by abstract art and involved contributions from about 60 people and not all of them where even musicians. He’s not releasing a lot of stuff like that cause most people aren’t really interested in such music and he’s trying to make a living with art. Guess my point is, he might not be known for crazy experiments, but he certainly is tried to push boundaries in the past, if you look beyond his popular work.
@Melodic Concept - Devin Townsends songwriting doesn't appeal to me, neither does Jacob Colliers, it doesn't mean they aren't good songwriters because there's no such thing, it's totally subjective.
Devin is just so fluently human. He’s a beacon of humility and there’s almost nothing superficial about the man. Just a raw, honest, organic human being… with a GREAT sense of humor to boot 😂
Strange, I didn’t see those qualities at all. I don’t know who this is and had a skip through a lot of it. But I do tend to not understand people that feel comfortable sitting as he is either, ha ha.😝🤘🏻🎸

He's also not a proto edgelord like Zappa was (although his edginess was tongue-in-cheek enough to be charming at times i.e. Joe's Garage, which is one of my favorite concept albums).
"Has a varied discography" doesn't mean anything, nah, he doesn't qualify. One has to piss off people if he want to follow Zappa, otherwise anyone who has more than 3 bands can be the new Zappa.

I didn’t know who DT was by name. I had never heard of SYL or any of his other projects. Directly after the NAMM Coffee with Ola I went down a Devin rabbit hole. According to Spotify I spent over 88k minutes listening to Devin material. I bought Sex and Religion when it was a brand new cd and he was 19. I remember thinking “who the fuck is this guy?” Now I find Devin to be one of the greatest vocalists in the world. His creativity and sensitivity is exactly what the world needs. I met Devin for a minute at the Warehouse in Tampa, Fl. when I was super young around the year 2000 and I told him he was the best musician in the building and he was so nice and thanked me in a kind voice while smiling. Funny thing is usually a musician will deny it if you tell them that they are the greatest at something but I think Devin knew I meant what I said and he probably thought I was right too. It was Dark Tanquillity, Strapping Young Lad, Napalm Death and Nile. I drove 4 or 5 hours to see SYL that night.

He'd be the person i'd pick if i would get to spend a day with any person i want ... as Einstein and Hawking and all the other interesting people are all dead already, and would probably be rather boring anyways. Let's hope current and future generations will get to enjoy him (and his works) a lot longer!
It makes me so happy to see Devin finally happy with his process and the music he’s putting out. DTP made some of my favorite albums of all time but even by 2014 with Z2 he seemed like he felt constrained by the project.
I recall the first time I found this wonderful human. A friend announced they were seeing DTP live touring Addicted and I wasn't really aware that Devin existed outside of old Strapping. I was peripherally aware of both SYL and to a lesser extent Vai's Sex and Religion album but had not really explored his non-SYL material. I instantly went on a journey finding Devins music, his other projects, his collaborators and have been a great fan of the man; if not all the music, ever since. Through Devin I also discovered his connection to Anneke VG and this lead me down the rabbit hole of dutch metal. Not all of his music is to my taste; but that OK - I believe there is something in his catalogue for everyone and always encourage people to give his work a listen.

Devin's such a beautiful human being. His ability to be himself is an inspiration. He's an anti-Ego hero, an example of showing us all that we are perfect the way we are. Love ourselves, our own reality is all we know. Be true to ourselves and follow your heart. The universe of your soul is more complex than the outside world. Only you have the honor of knowing the complexity of yourself.
If I’m being honest I love SYL it’s why I started following his career. These days his music doesn’t work for me but I stick around because he’s an awesome, honest and articulate dude and I love that about him. He’s the best. He’s not Heavy anymore but he’s still Devy and that’s good enough. 🤘
There are a lot more of you than you realise. Peak Devin is 1998 (City/OM) and it’s never been the same since… but I’m sure Michelangelo pumped out tons of shit apart from the Sistine Chapel and the David sculpture. We take the gold out of the mud. ❤
So glad to see you and Devin again! Every time I saw him live, he was amazing, but also so peaceful and positive... Sure, nobody is a god, and we are all human beings, but I'll always be grateful for shaking the hand of one of my heroes.
"Music exists, regardless of who writes it... so your biases and upbringing and your experiences allow you to participate in those vibratory experiences in ways so that your entire objective becomes doing it justice, rather than claiming it" (30:00) Holy shit. That's probably the most humble and selfless thing I've ever heard an artist say about their work. Devin's a treasure.
Devy and his work was exactly what I needed to discover at the beginning of the pandemic. I've found a greater sense of peace in the chaos of life thanks to him and his work.

That opalescent guitar is mesmerizing! Probably my favorite look for a guitar ever! ❤️
Man, i love Devin. He is the coolest guy in metal. Terribly humble, ultra polite, immensely funny. Oh, and very talented too.
Devin is always so fun to see and hear him talking... Awesome man and a genius musician.
A true creative person and he's expressing himself as such. its awesome.
Just when you think Devin couldn't be more wholesome and relatable he drops a Bill & Ted reference at the very end of the interview ❤
I love this. Thanks for having Devin on.
Love Devin. Very down to earth guy & he is a very talented musician.
Excellent interview Ola, had a smile on my face the whole time....
devin. .. one o my heros. thanks ola!
So glad to see you and Devin again! Every time I saw him live, he was amazing, but also so peaceful and positive... Sure, nobody is a god, and we are all human beings, but I'll always be grateful for shaking the hand of one of my heroes.
Great interview, guys, thanks! I would like to experience 5 minutes inside the mind of Devin.
Devin is a real treasure. I love listening to him talk.
Always love to hear from devin
On a Planet of a million extraordinary musician/artist/genious/virtuoso level humans..... there is Devin Townsend .... andn then there is everyone else.
Devin is a bit of a trail blazer and reminds me of Brendan Smalls. They both make their visions come true without compromise. 2 badass metal dudes.
A real pleasure to watch, thanks Ola! and thaks Devin!
Such a talented and genius person. So skillfully breaks down complicated problems of life and soul.
Very nice open discussion, Thanks both!
Thanks, Ola and Devin. Great talk. I feel what Dev says in my bones, and it's very inspiring. Now... How to make time for creativity?
Good for you Ola and fam
Listening to Devin talk about life is therapy!
What a fantastic treat for me on a Friday after a grinding week. Thank you both for the camaraderie, respect and genuine interaction!
Was so excited to see Devin Townsend on another Coffee With Ola🤘🏼🖤
Just fantastic. I could watch them for hours.
My musical hero! Thanks for putting this together Ola.
Can't wait - this will be awesome 🤣👍
...only now I can't get that portabello mushroom image out of my head.... Thanks Dev 😎🤘🤣
God how much I love this guy!
Devin said so many things that I think a lot of people could benefit from. Myself included. Best coffee with yet. Thanks for sharing!
We heard it her first boys. If we want another heavy devy record we need to get him the most relaxed he’s ever been. I say we chip in for a black card for unlimited spa days, yoga, incense, and long format relaxing train ride videos.
I loved Devin from The First Record with Steve Vai where is "weird" shouting singing style was coming from another planet ... and Steve Was and Still is Connect with "Aliens" in some way , he love out of this world things... Devin is a Like Fountain that never Stop to make Flow Out New Musical Ideas every Year ... i think is simply a Genius .. and One of the Still Alive Real RockStars,.. people that will left a clear sign in Music also in the most Far Future ... Thx Devin and Thx Ola to Host Him.
What a great video. Devin is so cool and you can tell he is very passionate about what he is doing.
Fuck that was an awesome interview . Devon is funny as hell!
I think Devin's fantastic!!!
