Chicago resident here. I’ll break it down. Housing projects (overpopulated) were destroyed, causing opposing gang members to relocate and live on the same block. The city thought cutting the head off the snake would kill it, but they were wrong. They locked up gang leaders, which eventually killed any type of gang structure. Gangs always had codes. It used to be gangs vs gangs, but now its a free-for-all with no structure. There’s a bunch of kids with mental health issues running around and avenging their friends. An old friend I played baseball with was gunned down this summer. He was not gang affiliated and he just had a daughter. The south side doesnt even have a trauma center. City policy combined with a lack of resources helped fuel the situation.
    Edit:
This is a multifaceted issue. There is not just 1 cause or just 1 solution. Nitpicking as if only music, black culture, etc are the problem is purposely missing the point because of subconscious prejudices.
Redlining was a city practice that literally created these neighborhoods. The majority of shootings are gang related and to provide a solution, you have to understand gang culture. The people in the communities do share the blame to a certain extent too. However this is a nation of individuals, so law-abiding, low income black people have literally nothing to do with black criminals who are strangers. Stop putting them all in one box and trying to make them accountable for strangers who happen to be black too.
A lot of people under the comments are using this as an opportunity to flaunt their racism instead of talking about city policy. Anthrax is poisonous no matter who ingests it, therefore it causes poison. Fatherless households produced a president and many other successful people. So to use that as an excuse for a multifaceted issue is not accurate. Same applies with music. At least be intellectually honest and have a legitimate point to make if you disagree. Criminals will be criminals, but the local and national government has an obligation to do right by EVERY citizen.

T E I don’t understand what you’re responding to. Are you under the assumption that I live in a bad neighborhood because I cited reasons for crime? I don’t , btw.
Most people who reside in bad neighborhoods typically don’t have the money to move. Running away and moving doesn’t solve or address the problem of bad policies and a lack of resources.
Its clear by your bootstrap mentality that you came to project something, which resulted in your strawman argument.

ought to have more police. and support your police. when some gang member is trying to rob a store, and gets slammed and clocked by the one time, don't rally about it, praise it and tell each other, you play stupid games you'll win stupid prizes. report crime when you see it, don't say well bobby is a good dude, so fuck it if he sells crack or robs homes. it's really simple, it's honestly the community that makes the difference. last tip, support legal, law abiding citizen gun ownership, and support stand your ground laws. someone breaks into your home, you blow a cavity in his chest, open and shut case. the end. sincerely, a person in small-town Texas who hopes yall can get well.

Straw buyer: "a person who buys something on behalf of another person in order to circumvent legal restrictions or enable fraud."
These are people with clean (or clean enough) police records to purchase firearms for resale on the black market. If the police later trace the gun back to them, they just claim it was lost or stolen and there's very little anyone can do about it. Most teenagers on the South Side of Chicago know someone who knows someone who will sell them a gun, no questions asked, in a matter of hours.

A man doesn't really feel like a man if he can't provide for his family. When he talks about PTSD in the ghettos it reminds me of a conversation I had with an old friend recently. I grew up in shithole areas of LA in the early 80s-90s. Lotta places, gangs were huge, pretty bad scene. I was always afraid of getting shot in a drive-by, whenever a car was coming up behind me, at night mostly, I'd start to panic and my blood would rush thinking I could get shot. Always gave me anxiety, a lot of people were dying around me as I grew up as a result of those types of shootings. I reconnected with an old friend after 20+ years that still lives there, I was telling him about how I still get that panic and anxiety whenever a car drives up behind me as I'm walking. He told me I had some kind of PTSD from the bad areas we grew up in, I'd never thought about it that way. I thought I just had an irrational fear now since it's extremely unlikely to happen anymore, especially given the area I live in now. Just can't really shake the thought.

Exactly it’s so sad that we have to deal with fear of even walking the streets. That’s why my family and I moved. After a drive by we survived we knew it was time to go. But some people don’t have the opportunity to go somewhere else and have a constant fear and are paranoid of many things a regular person shouldn’t have to worry about. So when they leave their old life they are still haunted by the things they feared before.

Yup, certain cultures just have zero accountability and blame all the problems on everyone else. They take no responsibility for destroying their own neighborhoods. They glorify violence and drug dealing. They don’t pursue education, have a lack of work ethic and the parents don’t teach their kids right from wrong. Do you see how they treat dogs or other pets? Not all, but most of them are terrible people. Truth hurts.

That's how St Louis is too. The city gets a horrible reputation. But it is extremely divided. During the great depression, the predominantly afro american areas on the northside suffered the most from high unemployment etc. In a way, the city inflicted this damage on their own communities. Delmar road formed a rough "boundary" between the black neighborhoods and the high-class white areas, places like Clayton and Central West End. Places just a mile or two away that happened to be some of the most desirable neighborhoods to live in in the US at the time. By the time you got to the 1950s and 60s, this divide was almost irreparable and the entire Northside of St Louis has pretty much become an entire wasteland.

Im from Chicago, and I need to point out a few things. First, the segregation today is mostly black and white. Historically, it was an immigrant city, and the white populations were also very segregated. There are not many cities large enough to boast a Bulgarian neighborhood, a Ukrainian neighborhood, etc. Those borders have faded over time, while the black/white/Hispanic divisions have not; but the European, Indian, and Asian restaurants and cultural hallmarks remain. Second, there are a lot of black professionals in the city, and every one I know moves to a rich, black neighborhood by choice. The city is large enough to support wealthy-black neighborhoods. Obama lived in one, Hyde Park on the near south side. Finally, it is a misconception that black neighborhoods are only on the South side, like there is a clear divide. Or, that the division is between poor black and rich white, as there are a lot of poor white neighborhoods as well.

"Fixing the problem starts with education"
I agree. Your earliest education starts at home with your first two teachers, your mother and father. Your mother teaches compassion and your father teaches respect. Thanks to the war on drugs and an inflated welfare program you have fathers in jail for possession and mothers having as many kids as possible to milk the govt.
Decriminalize possession of small amounts of drugs(hefty fine may work), roll back welfare for new single mothers to two children max and zero dependent claim on taxes if on govt assistance (everyone, not just black moms), existing single mothers will continue getting their checks but will have to pay it back in taxes once the kids reach 18, sterilize repeat violent criminals, and encourage community activities and organizations dedicated to uniting people rather than just sucking up govt money and keeping communities divided.

lol and I agree, I've never been to Chicago but we had to get off of the rez. Watched my mama die in front of us, I had extended family and our tribe but I wanted better for me and my sister. So I got married at 17 to a Marine, he let my sister and cousin come with me. He finished his tours while we stayed in Navy Housing while finishing school, then he packed all of us up, moved to Alabama, provided for us and loved us. Community here is amazing. He is white as could be but no one ever gave us shame. Ever.
So...because of this young, southern, white bullet catcher who fell in love with a poor native girl and never once complained about us. His family is amazing and eventually, in all...we got over 12 of my family members down here, finished highschool and 7 of us finished college (so far). My man was voted in as a citizen of the Quileute so now we can foster WA natives (well most natives) now that aren't my family. This little town down here deserves an award for it too.

You can tell he touches on all the things he’s been trained to believe:
    It’s happening because it’s segregated.
No one cares because we’re black.
If it happened, even a little, to white people they would air lift them out of here.
But as the conversation goes on he gets to what he knows to be true in his head and heart:
    Education is important.
Having a father/positive role model in the home.
Community policing in combination with effective policing.
That’s what needs to happen but the leadership of the left has conditioned the people who live in these areas to react to these solutions by saying they’re racists.
I live in a major city that used to be rot with crime, of the gang and various types. What happened was the people of this city had enough and open themselves up to each other and to policing solutions and now the city as a whole is safer and more connected than ever. It didn’t happen overnight but now it’s a very safe place for anyone to live and that didn’t happen by accident.

    • @aidankilleen5889
      @aidankilleen5889 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That's it, that's the solution. Getting the people motivated to change it, getting them to see that there is another way. Repairing the family structure starting with parenthood, creating clever alternatives to crime, making life more enjoyable with more amenities, and so on. If you work family by family, block by block, giving people a better option and forgiving them for minor crimes if they commit to a better life, it will RAPIDLY change for the better. A gently guiding hand works best. Too much government is what created that mess.
