  • Hopefully, this video better explains what drive-by marketing is and why it should be avoided. I wanted to list the websites that I mentioned in this video as well. These two websites allow you to do giveaways for novellas/novels to help you grow your newsletter.

    Yes, yes, yes! So many people get marketing wrong, on the trad pub side too. Link spamming is so annoying--I get it on TH-cam too. Soft marketing works best most of the time for something like a book--be a real person, develop relationships, genuinely engage, and then you can slip in at the right time "hey I have a book, if it's up your alley." Usually works!

    Book bloggers also have a submission process on their blogs you must follow and CAN refuse to review a book. Period. Don’t get made at someone for saying “no” they have every right too. It upsets me too when I see this.

    Great vid! Couldn’t agree more. I get so irritated when I discover I have a DM on IG or Twitter only to find that it’s that dang link and a plea to buy their book. As a first interaction, it’s a major turn-off. Also, small publishers, and writing coaches have done the same. It’s wonderful that you have addressed this. Writers need to know that this can hinder them in a big way by getting themselves blocked by others as well as messing with their reputation before they even get started. Fab job! 💕

    I'm such an introvert - I would be mortified doing this! I'm dreading having to market my book and putting myself out there but I will definitely avoid 'shameless' (spammy) plug tactics like this because...I dunno, I want to engage with people not just hope to get some coin from them!

      It's easier to reach out and connect as an author online. There are forums, writing groups, lots of authors on youtube.
      Become a regular and comment on topics that interest you. Be yourself but keep it positive.
      Just like if you were talking to a friend or work colleagues about a movie show or tv programme you all love, you'd chat and give your opinion.
      I was scared to post on a big writing forum 2 years ago, now I am an active member and I am not even an author yet.

I will admit I post my sales or releases in my friends groups and you're right that everyone is seeing it a million times and scrolls right on passed it, but it's so hard to NOT post about it in them. lol Thank you for your videos. I so agree with you about Drive By Marketing. (love the term, BTW) My day job is online marketing so I'm in a ton of marketing groups on Facebook. I get bombed with friend requests where after accepting I get hit with a pitch to "help me" with SEO or funnels or solo ads or paid ads. I now perform my due diligence before accepting. If I notice we have NOTHING in common except marketing groups, I accept and reply telling them that my time is valuable and if they want to pitch me for an hour I charge $100. I also include a Paypal link. You'd be surprised how that stops them in their tracks ... HAHA. IMO, the proper way to market is to build relationships. Build value for your customer. And build your list.

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LOL! That’s hilarious. But it’s so true, our time is valuable and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. We can never get it back. I agree about building relationships... I think it’s the heart of social media. Without it, you’re just another person annoyingly selling something. Nobody has time for that!

  • @kiterafrey
    @kiterafrey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The only time you should be doing link posting in a FB group is when that group is about ONLY that. I run a group where we find free books to share that authors are electing to make free (Book Funnel, Amazon, For Newsletter Signups, Publisher Online Reads etc). It helps promo authors but it is also mainly just links. If someone came into my groups for asking publishing questions or networking and just dropped links their post wouldn’t get approved.
