  • I've been getting a lot of book marketing questions(which I love). I know I gave general answers but there's only so much time and the books I recommended will help you SO much and you can go through them at your own pace without having me rush through it. Many of these questions I will be making full-length videos on, and I'm hoping it will better help you with your marketing efforts. I've added creating a marketing plan for book launches on to my video list and it might be a few parts but it's something I'm asked a bunch so that video is coming soon! I think that will help you make you create a solid release plan to push your book and have a successful launch.
    Sorry for missing last week's Q&A, my internet connection was laughable. The good news is I have no more camping vacations planned until next year, so you're gonna keep seeing this face. Whoop!
    Make sure to go check out ‪@DavidGaughran‬on TH-cam! He created his channel in the last few months so go follow him. He's super knowledgeable and is no BS, plus I could listen to him talk all day with his accent. I also appreciate his honesty. It's easier for me to share what he's already put together because I pretty much agree with everything he says (which doesn't happen much in this industry! Too many scammers out there trying to rip you off or lead you astray.)
    David's TH-cam Channel:

    David's blog:
    davidgaughran.com/
    His blog posts contain a wealth of knowledge. As I mentioned, I've paid thousands of dollars to learn the things he's willingly shared for FREE. If you go to his website and scroll down his blog posts are broken up by categories.
    Side note: it's worth enrolling in his FREE course too. The info he shares, I've seen people charge $397-$997 for.
    The books of his I mentioned in this video:
    **This is the series link. GET THEM ALL! **

    They're all great! Trust me when I say don't recommend many marketing books when it comes to self-publishing because most people don't know what the hell they're talking about. David, on the other hand, does. Can't recommend him enough. Probably could've done a video on why you should download all of his books, read every single blog post, do his free course, and sign up for his newsletter, but oh well.
    ALSO, I DO NOT KNOW HIM. I just want to make that very clear. He's not my friend or someone I'm trying to help sell. I've just read his books and blog posts over the years. This isn't a buddy push, just a personal recommendation that I would stand behind.
    LOL, David if you read this... thanks for sharing so much information. I've been self-publishing for 6 years (recently quit my job to write full-time) and can't recommend your website/books enough to people at all different levels. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!

    I've been in the indie scene since 2011. I published my first romance novel in 2014 (Weak for Him). Under Kennedy Fox, we've made USA Today 4 times since 2017. With Lyra Parish, I've made top 100 several times on Amazon. I unpublished my Lyra Parish backlist in 2020 with zero regrets.

    It is so important to talk about the fact that “making it” isn’t a one and done event. The ups and downs are constant. The work is ongoing! Great video

    Courtney I would love if you would do a process video. As in, start to finish what you would do if you were starting out as a new author today. I've watched all of your videos but I'm officially starting for Nano and I would love to see what you say.

      When I relaunch my backlist, I plan to vlog/share what I'm doing, but lord knows how long that's going to be. lol. My current release schedule under Kennedy Fox has me so busy these days!

    Thanks for your reply to my comment the other day, with your advise to keep promoting the back-list. The message of today is to be consistent with new releases. I tried four new releases for a year (Oct 2019 until Oct this year), which I stuck to, but to me it felt like I was rushing just to get those four books published. I recently decided to kick it down a notch with two releases a year, with the next one being in April (after the one that will come out this week). So, I guess, it’s whatever works best, right?

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to do what’s best for you! I have friends who take time off to write more so they can get ahead with their releases and it gives them a cushion to always stay ahead. If you can release two really great books and that works for you, then that’s what you should do 💯! Good luck!

    This was some good information! I take in everything I hear and sometimes I think it makes me do things I probably shouldn’t. I want to be consistent but it never seems to work out. I don’t want to put out subpar work and I don’t want to shortchange anything because I’m rushing. Now my next release won’t be until Summer 2021 which would be a whole year between releases.
    I hate that but it is what it is. I have a contract and hard deadlines to honor and I can’t mess that up so this is the best I could come up with. But if I also take this next year to get caught up, I’ll be able to publish more. I will take your advice about having a plan and looking into those marketing books! I love that you’re so willing to help us all and give us good advice we can follow (plus showing us all that there’s not really a magical formula. We already have what we need and just have to hone that and get better at it).

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have to do what's best for you! I think it's important to be happy with the work your releasing instead of rushing it! There's nothing wrong with that.

      @@TheCourtneyProject Thank you for saying this and you’re totally right. It’s really hard to promote a book you’re not proud of so I’ll just do what’s best for me right now. That may change in the future so I’ll be content with what I’m doing now

    Yasssssss, I've been waiting for this video. Does anyone else have experience with editors? All the research I did online suggests that $1-3K is normal. But I've seen this vid and another one that talked about the $600 range. What am I missing? Also, are there any Courtney-lovers interested in being a paranormal romance critique partner? I know there are websites, but I just want to be friends with my CPs. Maybe when I debut, I'll laugh at how geeky I sound.

    • @antheawald3998
      @antheawald3998 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TNTwoodwork Ooh, Fiverr is a great resource. Thank you! I see people with very short word limits. How are you using these vendors? For example, I have a book with 80K words and $90 for 600 words is awkward for me. It seems more like an editorial assessment??? I'm looking at both dev editing and copy editing/line editing. Is it normal for self-published authors to get a full in-line comment service in either?

    • @TNTwoodwork
      @TNTwoodwork 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@antheawald3998 First off, I'm a beginning author too... Well, the person that I hired doesn't have a set price for word-count and you can hire her for both proofreading and line-editing. Both together cost 200 dollar and it takes about a week. The only 'but' is that the person is from Nigeria where the median monthly salary is about 600 dollar. In my opinion the result is good enough for the price, especially the proofreading. For the line-editing it will not be flawless, but it's good enough for me at least to be able to filter out the final things myself. What helps as well is that I put the final draft away for about half a year before I send it out to the editor, which allows for a more fresh look at the work.... ps. I would be willing to become critique-partner, but I'm not sure whether my genre will be down your alley.... check my blog:

    90% of the stuff self-publishers do to promote their books is pointless. Focus on nailing the 10% that actually makes a difference.
    The most important thing is building your email list. There's nothing more valuable than having a tribe of engaged readers, ready and waiting for your next launch.
    You can introduce more marketing activities going forward, but, like Courtney says, be sure to have a marketing PLAN.
    Don't guess, or go around like a headless chicken, scattergunning the internet with your book.
    Stick to what's proven to work, and always measure your results so you know what's actually boosting your sales vs what's wasting your time.
