  • Today I visited Lafayette Cemetery in the Garden District of New Orleans. This place has some very old tombs, plus it's one of the most used cemeteries in New Orleans for film and television! It's been used for productions such as, 'Double Jeopardy', 'NCIS: New Orleans', and even the New Kids on the Block music video for 'You Got It (The Right Stuff)'.

    I've never seen so many people complain about a cemetery before 😂 Like yeah Nola cemeteries are dirty...do you know how old New Orleans is? The family that would keep up those tombs are long dead themselves. I think the dirty and broken tombs give the sites character. I love the cemeteries down in Nola, Metairie etc and I try to visit every time I go

      Exactly! I agree! If I could afford to then I'd go take care of my family tombs when other family members can't!

      What you see coating the outside of the tombs is also a combo of Mold alongside the dirt, or dust, I should say. I've been to this particular cemetery but was untable to get inside. Lafayette Cem is a very famous place! The tombs need to be whitewashed on the outside and always better maintained. However, we don't realise just how much traffic and visitors this plot of land attracts! It's a very busy place! A respectful.place. An awesome place. You feel.it the very second you are around it. It almost feels as if a Gravitational force pulling you toward it. The carvings on some of these tombs are outstanding. Some of the most beautiful art I've ever seen reside in Cathedrals and Cemetaries!

    Enjoyed your film. My family owns the Smith tomb with the most names on it. Since I started researching I have learned that there are 39 names on the tomb and 11 names that have not been added. This is strictly due to the cost. It was way too much for my parents to pay for when they priced it in 2010. It will continue to be used by our family.

      Norma Thomas: FYI They do pay to film there! You obviously don't know much about Louisiana and it's history! Being that it's the only state below sea level makes it hard to make sure upkeep is done because it gets flooded a lot! My family and many other families do whatever they can to make the cemetery look nice!

      Do you happen to remember the name on the tomb, or have a picture of it? It's closed to the public now due to safety precautions (the outside walls are tilting)

      Federal grant money should benefit the living, not the dead. Beware of people and government when they say "wouldn't it be a great idea to.........". They're about to screw you over in taxes.

    Toured there. The smaller tombs are also for families who have had a member buried in a family tomb too recent. They are only allowed to place a body in their family crypt after (I believe its 5 years). They can "rent" a tomb up front until time has expired and then have their family member placed in family crypt.

    • @bellakatherman1477

      Kathy Armstrong why do they have to wait 5 years to be placed into the crypt?

      @@bellakatherman1477 Maybe to allow proper decomposition, don't want to open up the tomb and smell grandpa's rotting corpse.

      They wait a year and 1 day.

    • @staceyt8851
      @staceyt8851 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bellakatherman1477 The wait is a year and a day, but many of the tombs have more than one "slot" for caskets to be placed. So for many it would take 3 deaths in less than a year for "rental" to be necessary.

    I am just seeing this. Thank You . That is where I will be entombed with my aunts and uncles who all lived around the corner from there . 4th st. , 6th st. But SHAME on the City of New Orleans for not taking care of it !! Or Lafayette # 2!!! I spoke with the city after Hurricane Katrina and was told that they had gotten money 💵 to repair things that they still have “ NOT “ Done !! Right now as of March 2023 you can’t enter unless you’re a family member “ ONLY “ by appointment! They are doing something with the “ Trees 🌳 “ sounding the cemetery!!! What a JOKE!!!!!
