  • Holt Cemetery in New Orleans is the one of the only in-ground cemeteries in the area, if not the only one. Most cemeteries in New Orleans feature above the ground crypts or tombs that resemble tiny homes. Holt Cemetery, named after Dr. Joseph Holt, was established in 1879 and is considered a "Potter's Field" cemetery as in its for people that can't afford an elaborate burial.

I once went into a cemetery and watched someone clean up a grave , I asked them as it was an old grave if it was a relative or ancestor, they replied "no , just a forgotten someone , but they were a world war one soldier" . It was nice they cleaned up the grave as a form of remembrance , it cost them nothing but a few minutes and a little thought and i am sure the family of that soul would have appreciated that small act.

Hilarious! I'm sure you deserve a proper home post cremation. So did all of the folks buried at Holt. I just went to Pioneer Cemetary in Georgetown, CA (built circa 1850). Everyone I was with decided to get cremated after seeing the poor conditions of the Cemetary. It wasnt as bad as Holt, but there were tombstones that were broken/knocked over and almost every plot was completely overgrown with grass and weeds despite the fact that it is still in active Cemetary

I've been to Holt Cemetery twice in 2012 sadly. The first time was in February for my cousin funeral, he was murdered at 25. Anyway I'm from Alabama and I always thought that all of the graveyards in New Orleans was above ground plots. When we pulled into the cemetery I was surprised to see it was an in ground cemetery but I thought the grounds was solid and stable like the ones in Alabama or other places. He was buried pretty much in the middle of the place and like you said in the video, it was really hard for me to walk without stepping on a grave. At FIRST I thought nothing of it. But when all of a sudden I stepped on this grave and my ankle went down into it. That's when I started to really pay attention and noticed bone fragments and collapsed graves. There was even this one grave that was particularly open, you could see the bottom part of the casket. Like the whole mood there was dreadful like it felt like a muggy dark cloud was just weighting over me. It was something I'd never forget man.

dignity in death is a privilege in a capitalist state.
the people buried at Holt include a mass grave for the gay men burned alive in the Up Stairs Lounge--they were not allowed proper burial because no one would admit to being related to them at the time.
Buddy Bolden, perhaps the greatest jazz musician of all time, is buried there because he was deemed insane.
Many of the people there are not just poor, but were actively rejected by the Catholic Church.
it is a "Do it yourself" cemetery.

This cemetary is the final resting place of Buddy Bolden. He is in an unmarked grave somewhere on the property. No one knows where, but near the main entrance there is a memorial monument. Actually, it is located right near another New Orleans musical legend's grave, the grave of Jessie Hill. Hill's big hit was "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" in 1960.

The Holt cemetery was mentioned by the New Orleans Magazine in 1980 as a Decco type and my wife, rest in peace, wrote to the magazine telling them it was not Decco that is was unclean and forgotten. The Magazine gave her prise for telling how this cemetery really was and it also stated that Delgado had one time was taken care of it and that one of the World War II associations was going to look after it. We came back later and it had been cleaned. All this was before Cathrina. It is a shame the way it looks today. Something should be done about it.

Having been born and raised in the New Orleans metro area my Hubz and I were taught to watch where we step in cementaries. A couple of things: 1) You have a great voice for this kind of work, nice cadence and articulation, too. 2) Seeing all those graves in disrepair may reflect, though sadly, that we truly don’t have any intrinsic value. For all apparent intent and purposes, those graves could have easily been for cats, rats or any other so-called lower animals. I still choose not to believe that is so, but as I get older, it takes a lot more effort to believe that we are anything special.

A Potter field cemetery is typicality for people that could not afford a funeral, the homeless, or even people that remained at the morgue and were never claimed. That is likely why this cemetery is like it is. I'm not trying to condone the condition as much as explaining why there isn't funds to properly maintain it. This cemetery giving the burial site to the family is an interesting way to try and keep some maintenance ongoing. But keep in mind, many of the people buried here were homeless and or unclaimed by any family. It is sad .

Bolden is buried somewhere in Holt Cemetery, but no one knows where. Also, there's a marker at the spot where an English man's ashes were scattered under an oak tree so he could be near Bolden. To think of the location, this cemetary must have been hit by several if not dozens and dozens of hurricanes since burial. If the families have to take care of the plots themselves, it's got to be hard to be hit by a hurricane, lose your house and maybe family members, then be expected to go to a grave site and clean it up. It's sad either way, but someone needs to step in and take care of the property. Maybe the city could show some compassion and help out.

I helped clean up Holt after Hurricane Katrina. A couple of times , I ran into families who came to work on their ancestors grave. I didn't find the cemetery creepy, just really depressing. I worked with one group of volunteers and right out in the open I found a person't hip bone. I was told to just lay it at the trunk of a tree....

In my opinion, the best cemetery to visit is a pet cemetery. You're surrounded by beings that lived their life in innocence so there's a sense of peace there, never creepiness. None of them were robbers or rapists etc, just pure creatures. You get a sense of welcome and can imagine a bunch of sweet tail-wagging licky doggies greeting you as you arrive. I wouldn't mind living next to one of those and sitting with them every other day

Surely you understand that many of these dead no longer have family or friends still alive & able to care for the plot; this is a common feature of areas with low income/elderly families. In general, many burial plots are cared for by the living to the best of their ability. Cemeteries are especially beautiful near Easter & All Saints Day when more care is visible and the living leave flowers on the graves.

Louisiana has no statutes to ensure that cemetery lands are regularly maintained by the organizations that sell the plots. The local funerary traditions of gifts, grave markers of clay tiles, and wood surrounds are adaptations of West African and old South traditions.
