Thing is, the bit about friendships online is true for TH-camrs AND people without audiences. In school for example, people will make the fact that they're hanging out with someone, really loud on social media, just so that people know they're hanging out. I think it's about other people's views on your social life and hyping that up which can feel like a false friendship.
I dont they weren't talking about youtube specifically. They're youtubers, so they're relating it to that, but just social media in general and talking about breakups is a big deal. I can see how it works in high school because of gossip. However, after school, nobody really cares anymore. I'm in college and honestly, relationships aren't a big deal because no one cares enough because you're there to learn. But yeah, social media wise, that makes sense.
Yeh, I see what you mean, but I'm talking more in terms of friendships as opposed to relationships. Like, someone could be hanging with someone else for the first time ever but they'll put it all over social media like they've been besties their whole lives, and that happens to people with audiences and people without and they have the same effect, they make the platonic relationship feel forced and in a way, false.
I really enjoyed this! So happy to hear other people talking about this subject :) I find all the dynamics and whatnot so bloody fascinating. Our lives are so incredibly weird hahaha
Interesting point- you included the clip of Connie coming in and offering a cup of tea in this video, and that gave 'evidence' to viewers invested in your friendship. This isn't a bad thing, and I think it helps break the viewer/youtuber boundary by showing people being 'real' and not distant, like celebrities. Perhaps this is why some TH-camrs, as Evan puts it, 'play up friendships'- to add realism.
sorry to be annoying but I feel like Dan and Phil are like this bc I'm the one hand you can tell they are genuinely really good friends but on the other hand their entire branding is based off them together so if they were to split apart it would be really different
I feel like it was/is the fans that did that as they built up the idea of 'phan' more all though Dan and Phil did come up with Phan an example of when the fans did this was the BBC teen choice awards when the fans and the media chose Dan and Phil as best British vloger I feel like they do play on it a little for like #branding but their friendship is genuine. It mainly the media who have made them Dan And Phil not Dan OR Phil. Yes they are know as Dan and Phil but they never intended it to happen.
i know, i was thinking about that the whole time. they've toured and released books together so if they ever had a massive fight or moved away from each other it would be super hard for them
I'm still very much a small youtuber with a tiny amount of subscribers, but I've been pretty active in the small youtube scene in London since 2015. I can honestly say this video is extremely fascinating to me because these are the sort of conversations my youtube friends and I sit around having too. The whole bit about how to even go about meeting someone without that organic introduction is too real. I sort of have a youtube gang as you called it lol, I guess, but I've never thought about the fomo thing before. My thoughts are all jumbled, but this was spot on and very interesting to hear a discussion that parallels ones I've had many times before! And as I said earlier, I'm on a much smaller level of this than you all are, so I can only imagine how much more intense it is when a lot more is at stake and more people are watching. In summary, I love your youtube culture videos, Lucy. I always find them very insightful!
anyone else for the first time ever feel like "thank god i'm not a youtuber" ... i mean becoming youtub made me realise it isnt as fun as it seems but now its really hitting home that I'm kinda lucky to have the ability to have organic interactions and not have to keep tabs on everyone or have my opinions put under extreme scutiny
i think a super important aspect missing (no shade or anything all g) is lgbt couples. theyre often the ones with the couple branding, but also are so so important for people to see. i think theres just a whole bunch of other factors involved in those situations.
I have a question. So like you said, you had become friends at gatherings, is TH-cam at a point now where that can't happen anymore? Like, would you, or do you feel that TH-camrs would be friends with "fans"? Or is it too awkward with all the information us viewers know about TH-camrs that make a friendship unsustainable? I would love to know your thoughts.
I think that Evan has made a video on that before. Like I think since YT has grown so big it'd be harder to actually meet TH-camrs at gatherings unless you yourself also had a pretty decent following and wasn't just there for a quick meetup and hug. I honestly don't think everything that happened in 2012 or earlier has a possibility of happening now just because there's thousands at convention centers as opposed to a few people in a park.
I think I remember the video, I feel like due to the growth of TH-cam if any of us were to be friends with creators we'd have to work our way up, so if any small TH-camrs want to do a gathering I'm all for it.
You should start your own gathering! Although I'm pretty sure smaller YT's have had their own before. I think just be careful with what your intentions are. Like, I don't see anything bad in wanting to get to know bigger TH-camrs but I think any gathering you have or go to should also be to meet the smaller ones (who knows, maybe one of them will be the next Lucy Moon or Evan)
I would also love to host a gathering but I currently am not creating content (Not sure what to do). And of course, I would never go to a gathering of anyone I didn't know or if I didn't enjoy their content.
yessssss i wish this was a discussion 3 years ago! esp the FOMO thing like that is too soul-crushingly real, it's fascinating and scary all at one time woo! next big tag will be, HOW TO BE AN ETHICAL TH-camR?!??
As a super small TH-camr who's friends with bigger creators like you, or others (don't want to name drop) I feel the green room thing so much. I can rarely see my TH-cam friends anymore because there's a literal barrier, and then the rare times I do get in via a friend it's so much more awkward than it used to be.
this was very insightful! I love it when you talk about youtube culture. I know your thoughts obviously don't represent all creators on this platform, but it was interesting to hear where you three agreed and disagreed on the various aspects
i loved this lucy. every time i watch one of these videos about the relationships youtubers have with each other or the relationships youtubers have with viewers I want to physically climb through my screen to drop my 2 cents in!! A part of me wonders if the majority of youtubers would continue to make videos if the gap between creators and viewers was as small as it was prior to 2012. I feel like to a certain extent a lot of people do it for the "fame" they feel walking around convention centers. Slight side note, but I also don't really understand why people who make videos feel uncomfortable with their viewers potentially being their friends/in a relationship with them. I was watching a Shane Dawson podcast with MannyMUA and he talked about how he would never go on another date with someone if they told him they knew who he was. Maybe me not being in that position hinders the validity of my perspective on this, but I feel like that's setting up boundaries for yourself that don't really need to be there? I mean people are people, and if you like every part of someone why would you discount them for having basic knowledge of the internet/your existence? What you guys brought up about interactions in the "green rooms" also really confused me -- I don't know what it's like to have a huge platform but I figured that people would enjoy the company of others who like their content? Also why do some youtubers encourage their viewers to be fangirls (shoutouts/follow sprees/etc) when apparently most have a negative point of view on them? Like "yass scream for me hit that sub button" but "don't actually talk to me"?? I think it'd be incredibly interesting if you got a viewer or small youtuber in on these discussions because I feel like there's a huge difference in small youtubers at conventions in 2012 vs small youtubers at conventions in 2017. The fact that lucy could even interact with luke is wild in comparison to what conventions look like now -- and i wonder how that effects newer creators (if it does at all) and bigger creators. // prob a shot in the dark but if any smaller youtubers/viewers in general are chill & wanna make a lil vid about the perspectives of the people watching this happen, hmu!! May or may not happen but I've had all these thoughts swirling in my head since YT got bigger and bigger after 2012 and i feel like there's another side to the story that isn't represented in videos like these.
I find it interesting how similar this stuff is in your friendships but also in the small youtuber world. same stuff, different scale. i've had lots of people think i was closer to someone than i actually am because of our online interactions, and they are my friends but you're right in that there is that extra dynamic thrown in that you have to navigate carefully. idk, like obviously not as much is at stake, but the same kind of cycle happens, even at the smaller level.
With Lucy's sorta TH-cam analysis videos, it's interesting to see someone making videos on topics that are still unfolding as we speak and also from the perspective of within it. idk I like it
Relationships are tricky when you have a following. I remember when Marcus and Niomi broke up, people kept asking if they broke up or not. I don't understand why they asked that 'cause it was pretty obvious; it's pretty clear if their partner - who always featured in their videos - suddenly never features. 90% of their comments on all platforms during that weird period were of the breakup, which was probably shit for them. I think it would have been better if they announced it earlier.
that moment when you get like a notification about lucy's new video & you just accept the fact that altho its 00:26AM here u just need to watch the video, even if that means u r totally gonna fail ur exams tomorrow :))) #nostress
watching other people's colabs with friends on youtube is a little isolating to me at times because either I love both people in the video and I'm like "damn, why can't I be their friends/ have friends like this" or I don't really like one of the people and I feel bad for not liking them because it sometimes seems like a package deal and that I should like them.
I'm new to making vids and getting subscribers on youtube (I literally have 50), and the feeling of wanting to be friends with some people because I genuinely like them and not their subscriber number/not coming of as a fangirl is so real. SO SO SPOT ON. Like how do I approach ANYONE that's on youtube without it?!
Approach youtubers like you would a peer. If you like a video or something tweet at them with specific feedback. For example, you would say something about what they said in a video rather than be like "i LOVE you". If you talk to them as a fan, you will be treated and dismissed as one. Being a fan implies that you are somehow in a lower level. I don't know if I' m making sense cause I'm tired and it's really late
Easier said than done. If it's this type of video, where it's a discussion I have no problem laying down my opinion, however if it's video that isn't a discussion, for example a sketch, you can't really go with discussing... You can critique it, which will often boil down to either "I love it" (read; fangirl, again), or "I don't care" (a.k.a. why are you watching)... For me it doesn't really work with all formats, just this one.
Loved this! I've always found it a bit odd because I've met people through TH-cam, creators that I genuinely like as people and would want to be friends with but I always worried that they would think I was trying to social climb. But at the same time, because of that worry, i think I haven't reached out to people or really made friends with people at events/parties which is a shame. Great video :) x
Such an interesting topic, you've inspired me to do a video on this at some point! Made me realise that I have friends that I keep offline as well as friends who I publicly post about on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook etc. Also, Patty Walter's band are mad good, saw them at Slam Dunk back in 2015!
I think the fake friend thing is more than just a TH-cam thing. I've wished happy birthday to people on facebook I havent seen in years and who I'm honestly not that close to. I think a lot of people do it just to be polite.
It's honestly the weirdest/funniest thing to me when you post videos with other TH-camrs that I've been following for soooo long -- like 2010/11 long -- because I discovered your channel through other new finds and without the aid or collaboration with those I've casually followed for almost a decade now. So, to add to that conversation of relationships and friendships on TH-cam, especially within the realm of British TH-camrs, the world is very small. Everyone knows someone else and eventually, all roads lead to Rome. In a way, although I have absolutely no experience with this world so it's just conjecture, every TH-camr to TH-camr relationship is a public one, no matter how little known it is. There will always be that level of publicity because of the content that is posted online and the people that pay attention to it. It sounds negative, but actually, that is one of the coolest things ever.
-- and by "coolest things ever", I don't mean some "fame" grabbing neato thing, I mean like you have this ability to shape the way other people view what a friendship or relationship is supposed to be like, and while you can totally use this power for evil, you can also use it for good. And that's something.
I love how Luke's cup aparece so random out of nowhere at the beginning xd Long life to the tea! Btw, love how honest this kind of chats are! Love u guys!
in saying all of that i kind of want to add that just because a relationship has an online presence doesn't mean that its fake or "forced". the people who have a major social presence are just normal people and their lives go beyond their online portfolios
It's interesting as a viewer to know that the people making the content we watch have these concerns and it's quite nice I guess to be party to these conversations.
I enjoyed watching this honest video :) Maybe you three could do another one, talking about how it was for you to get into the youtube community. Like when and how you started interacting with other youtubers and how you became friends etc. Cause I'd love to know how it it for 'new youtubers' like..do they suddenly appear at the TH-cam Space? How do they get integrated etc?
I think our generation as a whole love putting friendships on social media! I mean, I don''t think half an hour can go by without me seeing a 'friendiversary' post on Facebook!
mATE i feel you when it comes to coming across as a fangirl. i want to just have conversations with other youtubers, and with smaller youtubers (e.g. lucy or fiona) i can just have these conversations, whereas with someone even like dodie i feel like there's always a vibe of me being a fangirl and just wanting a selfie and to say hi because so many people in their audience are. to a certain extent, sometimes i may try to befriend someone because of their sub count but generally, im pals with the people i am because they're incredible and they just happen to have like 4k
I couldn't help but think of a former close friend of Evan & Luke that has fallen from grace and I remember Evan saying that the group that was build around said friend was often really forced/used to get loads of views, id love to hear his POV on this now that it's has been a very years.
anyone else think it's kinda odd seeing Evan's background but with Lucy's color editing over it? It took me a minute to figure out why it felt so strange
Thanks for sharing guys, sincerely. As a new creator, it's a really important issue to be aware of. It definitely has a cringy feel about it haha. Some of the most important issues do.
If I hear it's someone's birthday, I wish them happy birthday. I didn't realize people thought that was fakey if you didn't know them. 😅 I'm not going to stop, it's in my nature
Is it weird I was kind of -not hoping for necessarily but definitely expecting you to talk about your experiences in terms of the fact you dated a youtuber but never really publicly? Idk I just thought it would be interesting to understand why you keep your relationships to yourself to the extent that you do (but I totally understand that that's very personal idk what I'm saying anymore)
+Megan We chose to keep it private because we felt that it would be a strange dynamic to have hundreds of thousands of people invest in our relationship. We didn't ever fancy having to announce a breakup, or as Evan said, to be talking to an audience as well as between ourselves on public platforms. I hope this answers your question!
11:26 - 11:52 SOMEONE FINALLY ARTICULATED THIS that is the exact reason why the idea of attending any sort of meet-up or convention is mortifying to me. It's a lose-lose situation.
Rose but in the end they were friends before Dan even started TH-cam. And they didn't even make a joint channel till they were friends for around 4-5 years. So while it is a brand they are still friends
Sarah Simpfendorfer oh ok thanks! that was quite a while ago, no? in the grand scheme of things I'm a relatively new fan (although it feels like I've loved her and her content for ages lol)
This actually made me feel really disgusting? Not even disgusted, like honestly disgusting, and I don't want to feel self conscious about trying to interact with creators online because that's supposed to be why this platform is so valuable? Cultivating relationships to get more views... Just gross.
Lemon Orange yes, I agree and I'm aware, just really unfortunate and idk I guess at the time of my comment I wasn't in the best head space to be reminded that creativity for creativity's sake isn't always the reality 💫
THIS IS SO INTERESTING
doddleoddle YES I agree
It is!
It really is
This was so lovely and chilled and interesting good job us 😋
LukeIsNotSexy good job u:)
luke your hair looks so good

Bertie and Sav are goals af. They are so smart and interesting. It's like I just want to hang out with them and chat over coffee.
*was secretely yearning for an analysation of dan and phils relationship and their branding*
Anyone else feeling extra lonely now
every night though

So many people are doing VEDA and I love it.
Evan is my favorite, I love his sarcasm that's how I talk on a daily basis
Ok can we talk about Evan's facial expressions though. He don't even need to speak. He can just sit there and naturally be entertaining
This was so awesome to see you all talk so honestly about something that seems so obvious and easy but could be really difficult!
i loved this lucy. every time i watch one of these videos about the relationships youtubers have with each other or the relationships youtubers have with viewers I want to physically climb through my screen to drop my 2 cents in!!

I love feeling like im sitting in my living room having a chat, please do it more often!
Really interesting video! I always wonder these things so is interesting to hear what TH-camrs actually think! 👌🏻
when youtubers break the 4th wall in a way and discuss the META OF TH-cam LMAO
the most humble slice of life, premium content
Lucy! Where is your necklace from? I'm mesmerized!
Laura Lynn she said in another comment that it's from brandy melville
Hi Lucy! I'm really inspired by your work and how much effort you put in to your FANTASTIC content. Plz never stop being so great 😁
i love those kinds of videos that contain honest conversations. you should do a podcast!:)
It was great to see you discuss this topic from three different perspectives, even if it was probably coincidence.
Can you three please do a series where you chat about stuff like this because it's absolutely lovely
I love how honest you're all being, glad I found your channel :D
Such an interesting topic to hear about! Thanks for sharing!!!
I think the fake friend thing is more than just a TH-cam thing. I've wished happy birthday to people on facebook I havent seen in years and who I'm honestly not that close to. I think a lot of people do it just to be polite.
Love your videos Lucy! So authentic and truthful!
Such an interesting video!!! Could watch this all day 😌
"Don't ruin this for me" 😂
Saw the kinda preview on snapchat and I'm looking forward to this, love you guys xx
Evan, you are so ridiculously sassy in this. It's hilarious!
Just found your channel today- already love it ☺️
in saying all of that i kind of want to add that just because a relationship has an online presence doesn't mean that its fake or "forced". the people who have a major social presence are just normal people and their lives go beyond their online portfolios
It's interesting as a viewer to know that the people making the content we watch have these concerns and it's quite nice I guess to be party to these conversations.
I enjoyed watching this honest video :)
Maybe you three could do another one, talking about how it was for you to get into the youtube community.
Gosh I love Evan's humour
'i treat all friends as brands' hahaha oh evan. this was a wonderful conversation.
mATE i feel you when it comes to coming across as a fangirl. i want to just have conversations with other youtubers, and with smaller youtubers (e.g. lucy or fiona) i can just have these conversations, whereas with someone even like dodie i feel like there's always a vibe of me being a fangirl and just wanting a selfie and to say hi because so many people in their audience are.
to a certain extent, sometimes i may try to befriend someone because of their sub count but generally, im pals with the people i am because they're incredible and they just happen to have like 4k
Lucy you're always drinking tea haha
I couldn't help but think of a former close friend of Evan & Luke that has fallen from grace and I remember Evan saying that the group that was build around said friend was often really forced/used to get loads of views, id love to hear his POV on this now that it's has been a very years.
luke looks so heckin nice in this i love him
anyone else think it's kinda odd seeing Evan's background but with Lucy's color editing over it? It took me a minute to figure out why it felt so strange
Can we just talk about how friggin adorable Evan was in the thumbnail
this is random, but I love Evan in other people's videos. it's like a whole different side if him haha
Luke's hair is reminding me of Dan Howell's
Thanks for sharing guys, sincerely. As a new creator, it's a really important issue to be aware of. It definitely has a cringy feel about it haha. Some of the most important issues do.
You really inspire me and I love watching your videos! keep on being you and creating great content xx
I love this video concept, also where is Evan's jumper from
this is the third video in a week where he's worn that jumper. smh evan get it together
(I know this was probably filmed on the same day as his sunday vid don't @ me)
Absolutely loving veda!
really nice video!! i really enjoyed watching it and this discussion was very interesting
If I hear it's someone's birthday, I wish them happy birthday. I didn't realize people thought that was fakey if you didn't know them. 😅 I'm not going to stop, it's in my nature
"Omg my faves interacting!!" "Don't blow this for me" hahah Evan 😂😂
❤❤❤ honest conversations will always be my favorite kind of content
Good topic. I love Evans sweatshirt!
A very interesting video!! I find the dynamics so fascinating x
Lucy Moon I totally understand all of this! Hope my question wasn't too invasive :)
This was a very very interesting video. Thanks for this perspective
11:26 - 11:52 SOMEONE FINALLY ARTICULATED THIS that is the exact reason why the idea of attending any sort of meet-up or convention is mortifying to me. It's a lose-lose situation.
9:00 LITERALLY DAN AND PHIL
Rose but in the end they were friends before Dan even started TH-cam. And they didn't even make a joint channel till they were friends for around 4-5 years. So while it is a brand they are still friends
9:27 luke that's not how mugs work
8:05 did I miss something, or when did dodie do that?
Madi W same
Sarah Simpfendorfer oh ok thanks! that was quite a while ago, no? in the grand scheme of things I'm a relatively new fan (although it feels like I've loved her and her content for ages lol)
it was when she was with sammy in like 2015 haha
Can you give a link to Zoe's video/blog about this ?
Enjoying Veda loads
just realized ive been watching you obsessively without subbing. Hey! Happy to have finally figured that one out
Rocking Evan's Japanese top .
loving your videos recently! and really love melanie aswell :)
this thumbnail is so cute aw
"I treat all friends as brands" hahah
do my freinds on twitter think they are famous then? ... i think most people do things publicly so others can see, but really good intresting video!!
"God, Lucy... Get out of my house!" lmfao. xD
Just realised that this was posted on my birthday.
UGH LUCY... is that CONNIE'S mug?!!!
very interesting points, i liked it
This actually made me feel really disgusting? Not even disgusted, like honestly disgusting, and I don't want to feel self conscious about trying to interact with creators online because that's supposed to be why this platform is so valuable? Cultivating relationships to get more views... Just gross.
Thats the way capitalism works, big youtubers are brands, obviously they will use each other to grow.
Lemon Orange yes, I agree and I'm aware, just really unfortunate and idk I guess at the time of my comment I wasn't in the best head space to be reminded that creativity for creativity's sake isn't always the reality 💫
