I know this video is 5 years old, but I just bought a coverstitch machine, and this tutorial was very helpful. I’m still practicing on scraps and have had some problems with the thinner knits getting sucked down into the plate. I haven’t mastered how to adjust the settings appropriately, but I’m learning. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you nwester. If your knits are super thin you might want to stablize with a knit fusible tape like Knit-N-Stable or Sewkeyse brand. Also be sure to sink your needles down in the fabric before starting to sew. Getting the settings right does take time, and I still struggle sometimes too! To prevent tunneling on thin knits it's helpful to turn the looper number waaaay down. I usually turn the needle tension down some too in that case. Best wishes!

Very clear and useful video, thanks. I'm new to my coverstitch machine and have just bought some of the Knit 'N Stable tape you mention. My current knit stay tape is only 1/2" wide so the 1" will be great for hems. Both these were bought from the US as this stuff is hard to find in the UK.
Oh, I love this! I have a coverstitch, but had many of the same problems. Also couldn't get the knack of the attachment. I was using tape, but with turn of the cloth I would never end up positioning it right. I never once thought to turn the fabric over first to see where the cloth edge should be and THEN put down tape. Genius in the simplicity!
It's the simplest solutions we don't think of, right? I sometimes try to reinvent the wheel instead. Lol. Thank you for commenting and happy sewing to you!
Last time I got several rolls of Pellon Knit-N-Stable at Amazon. They have the lowest prices. The rolls came in individual plastic bags rather than the pink box, but is exactly the same product. You can also get it at Walmart and possibly your local fabric store, but JoAnn doesn't carry it, at least my JA store doesn't.
Hi Meaghan! I have the Janome Coverpro 900CPX and it has only two needles. When I bought the machine I figured I didn't need 3 needles for the kind of sewing I do, and I liked the 5mm space between the needles. The 1000CPX and 2000CPX have 3 needles, and have either 3mm or 6mm if using two needles. However many needles you are using though, you want to line up the left needle with the raw edge of the hem. Thanks, Adriana! Yes, I sew all my knit sleeve and bottom hems on my coverstitch as well as straddle the seams on wovens sometimes. The stitching on each side of the seam line creates interest and is useful because it keeps the seam allowances in place. The chain stitch is great for making muslins because it's very easy to remove for fitting alterations. I still don't use that guide because I'm so used to using the tape. It's easier than fiddling with that clunky guide! :)
