Bixpy DIY Kit (Motor, Battery, Remote, & Adapters): bixpy.com/KayakDIY **Bixpy has been documented to fit over 800 watercraft. You Don't Need A Viking Kayak To Install a Bixpy Motor! We just used our Viking kayak for testing this kit. Bixpy has tons of mounting options and kits available (link above). Also if you like this rudder mounting idea you can buy affordable universal kayak rudders. Many kayaks can accommodate a rudder easily. Below are a few options we found. Simply get your rudder and overlay the template and reshape rudder so you can mount the 4 bolts! IT'S VERY EASY!**
Thanks for the detailed look at what a allen wrench looks like... and they sell these with a t-handle too! Wow! They also make for a horrible option whenever used to secure something which requires a good bit of torque. Such as the fan clutch pulley on a 1998 Mercedes Benz s420 or 420s. They use an 8mm allen head bolt to mount pulley to the engine. They get rounded out from people over torqueing them or if they are stuck and hard to get off. Once the head gets rounded out there is no easy way to remove them. But they are great for most jobs as they dont tend to slip as much as a phillips head.
I might be alone here, but the price of Bixpy is actually very competitive for getting a refined kit that looks factory, is no hassle, and is lightweight. Some pedal drive units themselves cost as much as this, which makes it a competitive proposition for someone who's got a pedal ready yak and thinking of upgrading. The only thing I don't like about this kit I've seen some pretty chintzy rudders/mounts out there, and I'd reservations about sticking it to just any rudder.
*RUDDER CUTTING NOTE & MOUNT POSITIONING* I intentionally cut further up into the rudder and decreased the draft of the motor in the water. You can preserve more of your rudder and cut less rudder off. You can drop mount lower on rudder and essentially just cut notch for cable on mount and drill 4 holes. Multiple ways of using the DIY mount kit. I went shallow draft and removed more rudder since I often run in flats as well as offshore.
A nice relaxing clip showing good detail for a super nice motor. I've checked for availability in the UK 🇬🇧😥 no can do what a shame. Postage from the USA 🇺🇸 will be a Nightmare. Oh well back to paddling.
Thanks for this video even though it is still relevant 2 yrs later! Great Video! I have the pelican 100 catch pwr coming sometime soon. I want to rig it like this as well using the universal rudder and steering. Two things 1. Would you recommend drilling into the transom to mount the universal rudder mount? 2. what screws do you use for your kayaks?
My thought on your build most trolling motors use metal housing below the water the metal works as a type of heat sink with the water to keep it cool and free from burning up however pretty kool idea not to mention i like enough to want to try my self Thank you for sharing
Best for hobie mirage drive. Very discreet. Stays flush with deck. A lot of space freed up without the pedal drive. Speed is 3-5 mph depending on kayak size. Love mine on my pro angler 14.
Okay to those who say it's not worth and they can buy a trolling motor for 100 bucks. Your missing the point. Your trolling motor battery cant float lol. This is designed for a kayak meant to get wet and still function.
Exactly. Even the motor is highly sealed unlike trolling motors. This same little Bixpy motor is used in scuba diving. Try submerging your trolling motor...it won’t last long.
ben anglin it is a great unit. I have a lot of different mounts and can swap the Bixpy onto all my crafts. Love the versatility. The handheld swimjet attachment is also a blast for snorkeling and diving.
I am usually pretty frugal. However, I will be honest I never saw the price to be that outrageous. I have made several homemade motor setups. The problem is they were never as versatile and weighed much more. I love the versatility of Bixpy, the low overall weight, the floating smart battery, the optional aux out on battery, and the wireless remote. I think the price could actually be more. If GoPro’s and drones can be $400-1000+ I don’t see why this price is so bad. Torqeedo motor kits are nearly twice the price. This is my primary means of entertainment so $1000 over several years of ownership doesn’t seem bad. Those are just my thoughts but I could see both sides. Thanks for stopping by. Stay tune in...next week we will have daily videos at iCAST. Some new pedal kayaks and more are hitting market. Some are even priced under $1500.
Yeah... at $500 I'd be much more interested. And that battery does not look very large so I doubt it would hold up to a solid day of activity on the water. Some *outstanding* ideas with it though - the safety kill, it floats, ect - however. Getting a good, solid motor intended for something like a bass boat and cobbling it down to fit a kayak would go a lot further time and distance wise. Making them match up to the rudder assembly as neatly, however, would take some more cobbling.
Just saw that under your account I can buy stuff off Amazon. I will keep that in mind for the future. I didn't know that. I also noticed you have a website.
mkdzr72 thanks! It all helps. Channel expenses can be high. For example all next week I have a hotel in Orlando to film iCAST. Lots of new kayaks and gear. It is fun work, but expensive. 🙂
Just remember, if you operate with one of these at night, you must comply with all regulations concerning powered watercraft; that is, you will need to add running lights (R/G side lights and all-around white).
mah on power pack, expected run times at different speed settings, kv of motor, etc. Slick website lacking any real information on the products makes me suspect of a very large margin to be made, ie for suckers.

hi , did you use the viking pod motor diy you did after fitting this , i have just purchased a new profish GT and im wondering the best way to go , the bixpy kit in the uk works out to be the equivalent of $1670 then you have to purchace the rudder kit .
So I just bought a 10 foot 40 lb kayak brand new for $250. That included paddle. I'm considering buying a motor but honestly I can't justify paying several times the price of the kayak for any accessory. Don't know why this is so expensive.
Wireless remote, PWM to increase efficiency, large capacity lithium battery, and a motor designed to be reliable even for scuba diving the deep. That is why it costs $1000 and honestly it should cost more. Competition costs nearly twice as much. You also can run your fish finder from this same battery. Some bikers just want a Walmart bike and yet some bikers wish to go further and buy carbon fiber touring bikes from a bike shop. This isn’t much different. You are clearly not their customer base and there is nothing wrong with that.
I see Bixpy now has has a solar panel charger. The Bixpy site doesn’t say if you can charge while using or not. Do you know? Also, would you recommend a second/third battery for ocean fishing?
*The solar charger panel is not for the motor kit battery.* The solar panel charger is for the PP-166 battery. The PP-166 battery will not power the motor. The PP-166 battery is designed to be a rugged waterproof off-grid 5v usb/12v power supply.
This setup looks awesome!! Can you give actual speeds with each setting? I’m looking to put a setup like this on my kayak for fishing and I want to troll around 1.2 to 2 mph.
*The latest Bixpy kit should be able to achieve those speeds. Bixpy added two more speeds to the low end specifically for fisherman wanting to do trolling. Bixpy now has 12 speeds.* lddy.no/3lir
Almost two years since the video has come out. Any updates? I got a Lifetime Tamerack 90508 for my birthday and would love to have of these istalled on it. Is it possible to install a Bixpy on that model kayak, or do I give up?
You could try their transom or power pole mount setup with push pole steering. YOU WILL HAVE TO DRILL INTO YOUR KAYAK and do a bit of customizing. Years later and my Bixpy is still working great. Same battery and motor. 🙂
@@KayakDIY Thank you so much....I will search for your suggestions....like you I would rather spend the money and get a quality product than less and have to spend more on it...
It seems that way until you try it. Trolling motors are heavy and awkward to mount. On top of that the batteries for trolling motors can be heavy. This motor kit is super simple. There are tons of adapters that make attaching it to your kayak simple.
Mal Drury depends I guess heavily on the rudder and kayak. It is called a DIY kit. You would need to use your own best judgement on whether it will meet your needs for your particular application. I have attached it to several rudders and kayaks with no issues so far. They also now have an already set up universal rudder kit which might be an option as well.
No. Although the new Bixpy batteries being shipped have 12 speeds and per testing can run up to 10hrs continuous in low speed. Bixpy added 2 lower speeds for anglers wishing to do trolling.
miopera40 actually great. Haven’t noticed a degrade in performance or longevity. It is lithium. 25.9v 333wh. Battery also has tough shell and has fallen out of my truck onto concrete with barely a scuff. The battery surprisingly floats if you flip the kayak over. In related news...look up the recent article on batteries. A UCI student accidentally discovered a way to improve longevity of batteries by using nanowires and encasement in electrolyte gel. Apparently can get 200,000 charge cycles or estimates 400yrs of use. Likely will be pricey, but great potential for our future. I’m a nerd. 🤓
mkdzr72 most trolling motors aren’t going to be as fast and if they are they will be much heavier and require large batteries which also add weight. The battery you will use will weigh much more than this Bixpy kit. Think of it like this. Some folks are happy with a cheap heavy Walmart bicycle and enthusiasts might want a carbon fiber touring bike. Both bikes move you from point A to point B but one does it better and consequently costs more. The lightweight floating Bixpy battery, versatile mounting options, and wireless remote are what sold me. I love the handheld mount....so much fun. This is actually a bargain compared to competitors like Torqeedo and ScubaJet. The technology behind the Bixpy I believe reflects the price. I have never had buyer remorse after purchasing Bixpy. I can use it on my paddleboards, kayaks, and even handheld during dive/snorkel trips.
KayakDIY yes, the Bixby is a option. Just not worth that kinda money. Sea-Doo makes a hand held too, I'm sure it could be adapted on here. And it's around $300.
It isn’t worth that kind of money “To You”. To people like me who live and breathe watersports it is considered a great deal. I remember waiting for it while it hit Kickstarter. I think the price could actually be higher based on the technology inside it,craftsmanship, and competing products. I have made a lot of DIY motor setups. I even did one for this same Viking kayak. None of them really compare to speed, convenience, & weight. The Seadoo scooters are very bulky and would be a pain to mount. You definitely wouldn’t rudder mount one. Also once you buy the DIY kit then other mounts are cheap and you can use the same motor and battery on other items like paddleboards. The fact is some folks will happily pay for one and others won’t. You obviously aren’t their customer base. I was because I wanted a motor that could work for all my crafts and watersports hobbies. It is a small price for me considering I don’t spend money on other forms of entertainment. I primarily just kayak, paddleboard, and dive. These activities don’t cost me anything aside from initial product cost. So $1000 over the spread of a year is less than what some people spend on entertainment. I will get several years of enjoyment from it so that becomes pretty affordable. I wouldn’t want to lug a big deep cycle battery and trolling motor everywhere as often as I go out. Bixpy makes more sense for me. Also, I like showing viewers new things. I already did a lot of DIY trolling motor setup vids.
Do you have to register your kayak with your DMV since you added the motor? In my state once you add a motor to any vessel you must register it and pay a yearly registration. Sea Pirates look lol.
Erick Peterman some states and locations you do. Other locations have reported only certain motor sizes required registration. Registration in many states is pretty quick process and cheap. Some states require register kayaks period so not much difference in just getting it registered with a motor. Whoever your enforcement agency is on the water would be best to check with. For us in Florida it is USCG and state of Florida FWC that control the waters. I primarily plan to use this for trolling offshore and as a paddle assist so I should be able to get several hours of battery life in those lower speeds. In the entire filming of this video I only used half the battery. I was out for a long time running mostly higher speeds.
Which is the case in most states, ... but let me add the fact that each “state” sets their own rules of law governing the addition of any “mechanized” form of propulsion, ... human powered devices are not regulated, nor is wind/sail, ... but they will spot you, well before you spot them, ... with that being said though, I am handicapped, as I have mobility issues in my lumbar, and am registered with chronic pain, ... yet I still have the desire to be “out there” on the water, ...
John E Osman III I live in California, if it is any form of human power, or wind powered you don't need to register the Kayak, as soon as you add the mechanized power it is required no matter how fast it goes. I was just wondering about state to state. My Kayak already has a trolling motor on it and I did register it.
It isn't just registration (displaying numbers/tag, keeping registration certificate paper with you)... You may now also need a boater's safety ID card ("license"), since you're technically operating a motor vessel. And because it's a motor vessel, that may also change what you need regarding USCG requirements (distress signaling device, night nav lights). With the prevalence of things like this Bixpy, the Torqeedo, powered yaks like Predator MK, Native's transom mount, or just good ole' boys with a 2x4 and trolling motor, the regulations can be confusing for anyone with no boating background. Some of the blame is partly on these companies (manufacturers and sellers) not being straight-forward with disclaimers...I doubt you will even find that kind of info listed anywhere on their media.
I had it out that entire time filming and more....I only used half the battery exploring all those canals. I could do roughly 75min at top speed or around 7hrs at lower speeds. Bixpy has done tons of performance tests with various kayaks. Highly recommend you check out their website for further info. I’m still testing the unit on my kayak. I’m very happy so far. More info here: lddy.no/3lir
seems like an unresolved design. You need to destroy part of your kayak rudder, and if you are paddling without the motor you lose some steering, and have additional drag in the water produced by the mount. They need to work on the mount. All for something that essentially takes you to paddling speed.
On the 2021 models the steering lines are attached to the rudder with small carabiners, it’s a very quick and easy process to remove the rudder and replace it with a non Bixby rudder. Also, you say it just brings you up to paddling speed but consider paddling into strong wind, tide or currents and that is when it comes into its own as a paddle assist, also if you’re fishing and trolling a lure it gives you both hands free to concentrate on fishing and dealing with the fish and sometimes it’s just nice to sit back and enjoy the ride 😁👍
Yes the state of Florida government does want you to register motorized kayaks. Some places in the world have registration only for motors over certain lb thrust. However, my local office doesn’t seem to understand the concept of registering kayaks. It is apparently confusing to them. So I got sick of trying. Will try again when I go to register my skiff I’m building. Maybe I will get someone who understands the concept. Haha 😂
@@KayakDIY why encourage a fascist government to take your money? I'm trying to figure ways to circumvent illeagle laws and some are leading them by the hand😳. If your kayak is being towed does it need to be registered? No; so ; tow it with RC TOYS or wind or solar power. Harness ten catfish.... Mush😂
Fun fact...I paid for my Bixpy. I do since then earn commission on sales, but Bixpy is a complex product that requires multiple videos to film properly. It has so many mounts. Just trying to give people a good feel for what it can do. Don’t like the video then don’t watch. I made it clear what the video was about. We have some other videos coming up. I have some awesome inflatable skiffs ordered, a insane sea scooter, and a floating island camp planned.
@@KayakDIY Fun fact, reputable review channels disclose when they were sent a free product or when they receive commissions on sales. It was a great video I ran across, and I liked the channel enough that I started watching some of the other videos. I'm just throwing some shade at the fact that these videos come off bias when affiliations aren't mentioned. Keep up the great work and don't mind us trolls.
I don't understand why people don't just buy an electric pirouge if that's what they wanna do. It's more stable and has more room. This kayak craze seems like a waste of money. No way I'd buy a kayak over pirouge
Ayanast Bayanast initial connections can be a bit stiff but are well sealed. I have had zero issues. Also if you apply dielectric grease to connections like instructed it lubricates the connections and makes them easier to plug and unplug.
Don’t see it being possible with battery prices. Heck a tiny GoPro costs $399. They use pricey LiFePO4 cells which maintain voltage longer and have longer lifespan (2000+ charge cycles). Their newest outdoors battery (not meant for motor) costs $229 right now (IG special) but replaces nearly 20 lead acid 7ah batteries which would cost you $513. Bixpy battery just lasts a lot longer than your typical batteries. So while the initial price is higher the cost of ownership potentially comes out to be less. Not to mention the Bixpy motor is sealed better than trolling motors and is even used for scuba diving. If you flip your kayak you might ruin a trolling motor, but you will be fine with Bixpy. I’ve had mine 3yrs and love it.
For some it will be viewed as expensive. I and many I know consider this to be the best deal on paddlecraft motor kit. It is inexpensive for what you get and based on competitors. Technology is pricey these days. Just look at high priced quality DJI drones for example....many are $1000. This Bixpy comes with a pretty high tech battery which alone is $500 and I think could actually cost more based on perceived quality and competing products. The Bixpy motor is well built and the versatility unlike other brands is added value. So for water enthusiasts like myself we look at Bixpy and think the price is just right if not undervalued. Btw I have built a lot of trolling motor kayak setups and normally am very frugal. This is my primary form of entertainment so $1000 over a period of several years of use is quite reasonable. Many folks who go to movies and other forms of entertainment can spend more than a grand in a year. That is just how I look at it. I respect your opinion. Thanks for stopping by and giving your feedback.
Spearfishing Northern Ireland hahaha. That is a little extreme. Can hardly get a Minn Kota for that. This is much more versatile and has a floating large capacity lithium battery with remote.
Liked the vid but NOBODY likes the useless fast forwards. Just cut them out. Those segments are as irritating as those computerized voices for video. thx
Thanks for the constructive criticism/tips. I do think audience attention and preferences evolve over time. Only way to find out what works is to try it. People watching videos at a later date might also not like stuff they used to. Kinda like we don’t like CGI looking videos, but when they first came out we were impressed. I’m significantly better at editing than the day I started 😂, but I got tons of room to improve. I wish I had taken videography classes in college. I went to school for nursing, paid off my loans, and then became a youtuber. ~Justin Aka KayakDIY
Over 50 sold just from my videos alone. Never had anyone complain yet. I use the heck out of mine. Lightweight and easy to mount on all my crafts or take diving via sea scooter mount. However, not everyone will see the value in it. Just like some folks are happy buying a bike at Walmart and others want a carbon fiber touring bike from a bike shop.

Can you hook a powerbank upto the battery 4 extended use?
No. Although the new Bixpy batteries being shipped have 12 speeds and per testing can run up to 10hrs continuous in low speed. Bixpy added 2 lower speeds for anglers wishing to do trolling.
How does the battery pack holds after a year of use? Batteries durability are normally the downside to these
miopera40 actually great.
I’m a nerd. 🤓
Way to expensive. Can buy 10 trolling motors for that price.
not to mention you can make your own brushless setup almost exactly like this for less than 1/4 the price
mkdzr72 most trolling motors aren’t going to be as fast and if they are they will be much heavier and require large batteries which also add weight.
Corbonzo still would need a lightweight battery and most popular brushless motors like Blue Robotics T-200 won’t compare in speed to Bixpy.
Erick Peterman in Ohio, any boat, kayak, etc. powered or not, it must be registered.
Some of the blame is partly on these companies (manufacturers and sellers) not being straight-forward with disclaimers...I doubt you will even find that kind of info listed anywhere on their media.
whats the life time of this motor going at full speed?
Doesn't Viking make a bixpy rudder for like $30. Then you would still have a rudder when you don't want to use the bixpy or sell the kayak
Hmmm where are the registration numbers for his boat, it is a powered unit now???? I know it by state but still....
always one moron on a thread
Torqeedo is better , no problems and with solar panel plague and play power for ever , Friendly Stefanos
+1 for the little pooch
Yeah our dog Roxy is the best dog ever.
So approx how long does the battary last for a kayak on the lake
I had it out that entire time filming and more....I only used half the battery exploring all those canals. I could do roughly 75min at top speed or around 7hrs at lower speeds. Bixpy has done tons of performance tests with various kayaks. Highly recommend you check out their website for further info. I’m still testing the unit on my kayak. I’m very happy so far.
More info here: lddy.no/3lir
I’d like it even more if I could connect it to any 12v battery.
how life the battery before use non stop
Black Apple
Speed 10 can get around 75min.
Lowest speed 1-2 can get 7-10hrs.
seems like an unresolved design.
How long last the battery?
Rigoberto Gutiérrez up to 7hrs on lower speed settings.
My typical daily use of high and low speeds yields 4-5hrs.
What’s the warranty like
🤷♂️ Haven’t had an need for warranty.
The loud background music to cover up how much noise it makes must mean it is very noisy.
Actually every says how quiet it is. I have multiple videos showing the same motor with different mounts. Not all has background music. Enjoy.
How can i get a one

Nice.
If In Florida don't you have to then register it and then pay the government their extortion fees?
Mush😂
Missing some light. Can't see shh_t Captain.
Yeah what's that like a $2k lol it's pretty neat
Would you please fix high pitch low pitch music, very distracting!
Ayanast Bayanast I cant fix it now. However, I will take that into consideration with upcoming videos. It is a learning process.
This ad brought to you by... Bixpy
The music doesn't go
I suck. 😂
It's just too expensive..
That music, all the ads, and fraudulent ads at that... Nauseating.
Matt Marzula yeah I will fire the video editor. Thanks for letting me know.
I don't understand why people don't just buy an electric pirouge if that's what they wanna do. It's more stable and has more room. This kayak craze seems like a waste of money. No way I'd buy a kayak over pirouge
“Temp plate”
The design of this motor and its connections are fussy! Invitations for trouble, there you have it
Ayanast Bayanast initial connections can be a bit stiff but are well sealed. I have had zero issues. Also if you apply dielectric grease to connections like instructed it lubricates the connections and makes them easier to plug and unplug.
@@KayakDIY Huh? We're supposed to read instructions? :-)
Thanks for another great video.
that music is f****** annoying
This like for music
Too much hassle! I’ll get a Hobie done already
I like it but way too expensive. If it was around $500 that would be more reasonable.
Way to expensive.
*too
lol if price was low as 100 bucks then id get the point not 1k...
Spearfishing Northern Ireland hahaha. That is a little extreme. Can hardly get a Minn Kota for that. This is much more versatile and has a floating large capacity lithium battery with remote.
1000.00 Doll hairs
Extremely expensive
Yet cheap compared to competitors. Honestly there are no significant competitors. No other motor is this versatile in mounting.
:)

Aka KayakDIY
1100 bucks? You can buy a premium kayak, or jonboat with a motor on it. Lol this is way over priced. Have fun selling these
Over 50 sold just from my videos alone.
