Why is the Honda Accord So Hated?

  • Hondas are some of the most fun cars to build. They are light weight, have an insane amount of engine options, and are a great way to start out your car loving career. With the Honda Civic usually being the preferred Honda platform for builds - one sometimes gets overlooked. The Honda Accord is a rare sight to see with engine swaps or turbo builds anymore, and I think that is a real shame. This H23 swapped Honda Accord shows you can take this generation Accord and truly make something special - so let's talk about it.

I daily a 97 EX sedan with 322k on it. Amazingly well put together car. My sweetheart car is a 1990 Accord EX that I manual swapped then rebuilt the engine in. The general consensus is that the 4th gen was the most favorite Accord followed by 3rd then 5th. 5th gen is nice, but the interior quality materials and design started cheapening a little bit more compared to 3rd and 4th due to the economy at the time so cost cutting was evident, though it did become more modern in design that previous gens. I also think 90-93 had a more aggressive design. I had a 91 wagon before that that had a Accord type R h22 red top with a t2w4 lsd manual in it.. that thing was spectacular, and I kept the AC and PS. Sounds like the 4th gen Si lude transmission isn't the best match for vtec in this car.. gears are way too long. The best combination is to get a h22 trans and use the Accord 5th gear so it's not revving 4k @ 80mph.

I walked past one everyday at University. One of the profs drove it. Thought it was so sick. Even today, I'd drive an older Accord no problem. I also liked the Acura Vigors. Finally my car is featured! Love the clickbait title as always 😂
To sum up why these aren't seen as often: parts are rare. Like really rare. To the point where it has taken me over 5 years to collect specific parts for what I need for my H22A1 swap and exterior making it a JTCC touring car replica. In the span I found my car in 2017, an enthusiast in Thailand hand made replica parts for the car! I finally received them this year in 2023 and prior to 2020, literally it didn't exist. It's all lost in the times with many sought after parts being held by owners to this day or hidden away.
Glad you got to experience a nice example of one!

Just Titled my 1994 Accord with 25k original miles. Was my Fathers car , when he passed in 2012 i changed the oil and put it away in the garage as i already had 3 cars. After 8 years i was in an accident with my truck. I went to tile honda but misplace title, that was 2020. Found it and just recently titled it. Brought to Mobil one oil change place and the owner wanted to buy it. 12 years in the garage new battery starts right up (no check engine light)it had 4 brand new Michelins on it that dry rotted and had to be changed as well. Running a little rough till the computer rel earns. so i took it out for an Italian tune up yesterday and it like it alot!

I have owned multiple accords over the years, adored them all. I presently drive a 2008 accord and still enjoy its simplicity and reliability despite its flaws starting to show due to its age and how much it has been passed along in my family. If possible, I would love to have an engine and transmission rebuild done with full electrical work done so it can last another 20 years easily. Oh, also replacing the seat bolstering would be nice too.
I have owned a 1984, 1986, 1989, 1994, the 2008 I now drive, 1987 accord and have driven the living snot out of all of them. Great cars.

I definitely recommend an 80's - 90's Accord as a first "enthusiast's" car. I had a 91' CB7 and it was a great first car. Was pretty reliable looked good one some really cheap wheels and I was able to hand out with Subaru BRZ's and Hyundai Genesis coupes on the touge. They even thought my car was turbocharged.
