Honda Civic Hatchback Review--WORTH THE MONEY??

  • The Honda Civic has been the best selling passenger car in Canada, for almost two decades, and now Honda has added the Hatchback into the lineup. The Honda Civic hatchback was once an inexpensive form of transportation, now the price has gone up and many of the features people want are not standard. The base engine is a 1.5L turbocharged engine but the new Sport and Sport Premium version has 6 more horsepower but requires premium fuel.
    Competitors to the Honda Civic are the Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta, Kia Soul, Nissan Versa, Chevy Sonic, Chevrolet Sonic, Kia Rio, Honda Fit, Honda HR-V, Toyota Yaris, Chevy Spark, Chevrolet Spark, Chevy Cruze, Chevrolet Cruze, Kia Forte, VW Jetta, VW Golf, Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Golf, Dodge Dart, Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, Fiat 500, Fiat 500X, Mazda3, Mazda2, Mazda6, Scion iM and Mitsubishi Lancer.

    First people complain that the Honda design is too boring, now they complain it's too bold.
    Then they complain it's low tech. Now that it has good tech, they complain it's too expensive.
    This vehicle is a good product because:
    Good projected resale value
    Good projected reliability
    Good engine power without much of a penalty from fuel economy (for its class)
    Good storage capacity
    Good ergonomics
    Fun to drive (for its class)
    Safety!
    Easy to do maintenance on
    Decent dealer network in North America
    Built in Europe!
    While I agree that the Mazda 3 is a better looking hatch and that the Impreza has AWD, this Civic is the most well rounded of the competitors and in my humble opinion a best buy.

    • @femaledeer
      @femaledeer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mourinho M It is too expensive especially at higher trims. The future SI and S version will probably be priced way too high making alternatives to the Civic more desireable. The car does drive like a more expensive car which is why it is selling well.

    Premium fuel is not required jus recommended , some people get that confused. You will get better performance out of the engine if you use premium fuel using regular unleaded will not hurt the engine or void manufacturers warranty .

    • @michael4123
      @michael4123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This! I just test drove it and asked that exact question. You gain a little bit of horse power from premium, but regular does NOT hurt the engine at all. The engine can adjust for different compression ratios.

    This looks a lot more like a crossover (and actually not too far off the Crosstour) than what you'd expect a compact hatch to look like. I think the Mazda3 with the 2.5L engine is arguably the better buy here.

      Thokko The Civic hatchback has already had a Kammback design (i.e., like a Prius/CRX design) since the 8th generation. So that's two generations already. :)
      Kammback design is better for aerodynamics, than a square hatchback like a Golf or EP3 hatch.

      I've got the sport with automatic and cvt, and yes the turbo lag is significant, and somewhat disappointing. Mind you I haven't driven any other turbo, so I don't have a good reference. Since the sport comes with the paddles, when I want to gun it, I might downshift with the paddles then throttle, and it does a pretty good job. Overall, I'm very happy with the car.

    In the UK, cars have a higher tax rate with engines above 1.5 litres. This is why the Civic is sold over there with 1.0 turbo and 1.5 turbo engines. They probably figured the 1.0 turbo wouldn’t sell in North America, and a 2.0 version would all have to be for export, so 1.5 it is.

  • @weaseldragon
    @weaseldragon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Huh? In the U.S. the Sport trim has the HP bump along with the center dual exhaust. If you want the full 180HP they're requiring Premium gas.... but if you use Regular you'll just get the standard 174HP. You will hardly notice a difference... I assume the onboard computer adjusts the timing depending on the fuel. So nobody is forcing you to buy premium.

    Pretty much the reason why it's such a deal breaker, just test drove the stick shift and it was such a disappointement: "Not that the six-speed manual is perfect-Honda's maddening rev-hang on upshifts is here in a big way. Shifting near redline on hard acceleration, the engine sometimes surges for a full second with your foot off the accelerator and the clutch depressed. The transmission doesn't mind fast shifts, but the delicate-feeling shifter and super-light clutch feel like they came from an arcade game."

    There is a Civic Hatchback EX, sunroof, Apple Car Play, 1.5 Turbo Charged, 17" Alloy Wheels, CVT Trans, around $22,800 in the USA. My first Honda 2003 was an LX and I will never do that again. This Hatchback is just beautiful. Sonic Gray Pearl would be my color pick, but too bad only available with black interior, very hot here in Florida in the summer. IMPORTANT CAR BUYING TIPS, the civic 2015 is a nice car, but there is 1 thing that i hate about any car, when they do the alignment the staring wheel is slightly leaning to the left side wile driving on a very strait highway, and you know what that means, the car could be in line , but ours wasn't, was always wearing the right tire on the out side, honda said that it was the tire company flat, that's not the truth, the truth is the car is aligned with the 2 front wheels to far to the right, and this why the staring wheel is going down to the left, but the honda are beautiful cars, i am not saying that, if someone is leasing , hay any thing is ok, but when buying any car, honda and nissan, mostly, i checked them all, all makes and models, there is 2 really important factors to look for when buying a new car, number 1, check all door and hood and trunk seams to see if the space is the same on all doors , hood , and trunk cover, number 2, how it is handling and staring on the highway, the staring wheel should be right strait and level wile driving on a strait highway , it should be so so easy and comfortably to drive, not having to direct the car every foot of the way, the car should almost float like a plain , if the car that you are thinking of buying fails thouse 2 test, leave it there walk away, try another car, until you find one that passes those 2 teats, it;s is very important, you will be very glad that you did, because a car that fails the 2 tests, your having big problems down the road, , this goes for all cars makes and models, but i have checked many cars , and honda , and nissan mostly have those problems, never grab and take, because listen guys, a car should be made straid all thing lining up nice, if not there something wrong some one is not telling you, car buying tips, you'll be glade that you did.

      DoubleD 613 I hate push button. In fact I can't stand it. Give me the old fashion key goes into key hole any day. That sounded wrong. Well, better than hole goes onto hole or key goes onto key if you catch my drift (pun intended).

    I think the fact the Sport trim hatches that use premium gas kills the offer. They should've worked around that, the Sport trim is still competing in a Economy class not the SI range or Type R. Kinda disappointed

    You really can't lose with a Honda Civic unless they're making stuff to break on purpose like what the U.S. and Germans do. My guess is Honda doesn't want a bad reputation, maybe the push button start and needless safety features will break so stay away from those and you should be fine.
    Buying new is tough, you gotta pit one dealer against each other to get well below sticker. I suggest to anybody buy the Civic LX and just replace the stock radio with a 7 inch touchscreen and it'll look like a top trim model.
    PS: I bought my 1988 Honda Accord DX Hatchback for 11.5K and a Civic LX hatchback today could be bought for 19.5K. My Accord DX didn't even have power windows, about 98-104HP back then and it probably was smaller than today's Civic. So does paying 8K more today for a LOT more car than 29 years ago seem like a good deal to you?

    He keeps mentioning that the car requires premium for that 180hp, but he's driving the lx which won't reach 180hp even with premium so why doesn't he just recommend the lx and say the sport trim hp bump isn't worth it. It's as if he doesn't know the lx is non premium.
    Also he mentions that he thinks it's Hondas strategy to get people into the hatch by offering a manual but from what I've heard for a while, Honda will pair the sedan with a manual sometime later this year. I do agree about the premium fuel debate, it doesn't seem worth it for a small increase in power.

    Guys, don't compare the Canadian trim levels between Canada and the States, as they have different contents! For example, the US Si is based on the LX, in Canada, the same Si is based on the EX, with some Touring features added. Etc...

    Premium for 6HP? Why would you do that.. The sedan Touring can do 0-60 in 7 seconds, 6HP isn't going to change anything noticeable. They definitely should've changed the interior to differentiate it more. The only thing nicer on this is the Sport's rims.

      Premium is the **only** petrol available in Europe. That would explain why it is designed for premium.

      The numbers are sad.... Honda is loosing it! When a Kia can do much higher numbers on REGULAR and is considered more reliable on top of it, it is time to think about their strategy. Kia/Hyundai 1.6L =201 HP Kia/Hyundai 2.0L =260 HP now nurfed to 230hp BOTH ON REGULAR (recommended) My 2011 Sportage turbo AWD does 0-60 in 6.2 now that puts this civic to shame.

    The Canadian LX is less expensive than the USDM LX trim and has most of the content of our EX trim that sits above Sport. Our LX doesn’t get the infotainment screen or heated seats but costs $21k USD. I can’t believe you’re complaining about the “premium” price and the 1.5T being standard. The 2.0 is slow and boring and no more efficient. I’m glad you can use regular gas in the turbo. 6hp not worth it for premium fuel you’ll never notice it. If you want more power from the 1.5T get a Hondata flash tune. It will require premium but you’ll be well over Civic Si power.

  • @barthil1
    @barthil1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its annoys me that Canada gets very limited trim levels to chose from for this hatch. It forces you to get the fully loaded top trim to get leather seats for example. In the US they get way more options. The EXL in the US is how id get this bit its not even an option in Canada. Get it together Honda. If you can give the US more trim levels to chose from you should give Canadians the same choices.

    The1. 5ton the crv does not require premium fuel. As far as I know, no honda requires premium. I'm sure you can eek out better performance with premium, but you won't kill your car uf you do not.

  • @kedmond

    it does not require premium fuel. it requires it for the highest horse power. you have a choice. also, you seem to be ignorant of its 40 mpg mileage. how is that bad? you can't get that with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, as you'd hope to have. that kind of engine would certainly be too much for a Civic...and not have such good mileage.

    Premium recommended fuel won;t limit sales. People will just put regular instead and get the power the other Civics get. It would be foolish to not buy the car because you can get more power with higher octane.
