When you pull the pin, you hold the spoon down in place. When you throw it the spoon springs outwards striking a detonator and then falls off. You have typically about 5 seconds before it detonates. So, they could throw a live grenade with the pin in and it most likely would not detonate, but not with the safety pin removed.
The instructions that came with the "Liberator" told the user to use it to sneakily kill a nazi officer and take their firearm. I don't think it went into detail but I recommend sneaking up from behind and taking one shot behind the ear.

Believe it or not, I've always wanted a Liberator gun. I collect strange and unusual weapons, and absolutely love collecting anything that is classified as an AOW. The Liberator was the least expensive firearm ever made, it cost right at $1 (in WWII that was a good hourly wage) and held several extra cartridges in the grip. They were dropped by the millions into occupied Europe, the idea being to sneak up behind an enemy soldier, pop him in the head, take his weapon then give the Liberator to a buddy so he could do the same thing. It was made of stamped and spot welded metal, and there was no rifling hence the less than stellar accuracy. The lack of rifling earns it the classification as an AOW by the National Firearms Act of 1934. Kudos to Edward for letting you shoot it, that's a rare and valuable piece. If you're interested, I'm fairly local to you, I have two original in the factory box Military Armament Corporation SSSW's (Single Shot Survival Weapon), or as it's more commonly known the MAC Stinger. One has been fired, so you can shoot that one. I can bring some interesting & rare NFA stuff out. Most can be fired, one or two are rare enough that I don't want to risk damaging them by shooting them.

If you're interested, I'm fairly local to you, I have two original in the factory box Military Armament Corporation SSSW's (Single Shot Survival Weapon), or as it's more commonly known the MAC Stinger. One has been fired, so you can shoot that one. I can bring some interesting & rare NFA stuff out. Most can be fired, one or two are rare enough that I don't want to risk damaging them by shooting them.
