Sure, they should have fired more distance shots. Thou the one fired didn't look too accurate. I thought that thing were super accurate but seemingly it depends on the production quality of these rocket bullets.
@@gofastskatkat The milling of the holes need to be perfect as well as the mix of propellant. If one or both components are not perfect the projectile will not fly in a straight line. "Normal" rockets got a gyroscope and some kind of steering. The rockets from the OICW-Project (was it H+K ?) were kinda accurate thou they had some control circuits in them. Also they were super expensive. I think the OICW-Rockets were flying more like grenades, but they had low kickback and were accelerating in air a bit after leaving the barrel. Gun Jesus XD has a video on that...
@@wurstelei1356 i thinkits a combination of old ammo and the gun moving after pulling the trigger before the rockets leave the barrel since its moving "slow" before it can accelerate
@@sgtmaggi The bullet continues to accelerate for 10 yards after leaving the barrel, but at the muzzle it has the same velocity/energy as a .45 ACP fired from a 1911 at the muzzle. The myth that you could catch a gyrojet bullet in a bottle, or your bare hand, is just that: a myth.
It does not matter, what they did is a rookie and potentially lethal mistake, bullet might easily go off late, and only luck helped nobody to get hurt that day. Weird to see it from "professionals", kinda lame weird flex.
Same, but even if you know it's unloaded 100%, it's a habit thing. Get used to looking down the barrel and eventually you may do it when you thought you were 100% sure, and that's that. They should've cut that part from the video as a lot of younger potential gun owners and enthusiasts watch these channels and we certainly don't want them thinking they should be doing this because professionals on TH-cam, in their eyes, did it before.
15:42 I was smiling at the shooting of them until he decided to look in the barrel of the gun for the squib round instantly was like I hope it doesn't jet propel into that guys face glad he's safe love your content keep it coming
Made me gasp when i saw Noah nearly remove himself from the gene pool. I have to assume that Noah Mechling, was thinking of the safety of others first. Like, "before I hand this gun to another person, I want to really make sure I understand and communicate the potential danger". In an act of stupidity or potential self-sacrifice, he looked down the barrel to confirm it was empty. It was not.
Yep, it's the inspiration for boltguns. Although boltgun rounds are more like two stage rockets with a warhead since they have shellcasings and an initial propellant. The rocket motor kicks in after the bolt round leaves the barrel. What i'm holding my breath for is for some backyard tinkerer to invent an actual bolt round because they would sort of work in theory, but we won't know the effectiveness until one is made.
The guy in the browning shirt really needs to watch where he's point that gun. He was flagging everyone else there while waving the gun around. At 15:41 he points the gun directly in his own face with an old malfunctioning rocket possibly stuck in the barrel. There were even holes drilled in the barrel of the gun so you could have seen a stuck rocket and then dissembled for clearing if necessary.
Small Arms Review did a fairly comprehensive article on the Gyrojet story and its developer Richard Mainhardt some years ago. Taofledermaus did what's probably the single best recent test firing of the Gyrojet pistol and carbine a few years ago. Backyard Ballistics in Italy tried recreating the rockets on a larger scale a few years ago as well, with some success. There were at least a few snub versions of the pistol made, and some select fire versions of both pistol and carbine. At least one pistol was used in combat in Vietnam, and was reportedly effective. They've also been fired underwater. That's all covered in the Small Arms Review report from the early 2000s. Addition: looks like all of the reported Gyrojet problems surfaced. Misfires, variable velocities, sometimes wild inaccuracy, and maximum velocity isn't reached until some distance from the gun. Before which velocity can be very low and the rocket is easily deflected. Even when new, performance of the little Gyrojet rockets was somewhat erratic. I believe it's been determined that the propellent was a single formed grain of Bullseye smokeless powder wrapped in flash paper. There seems to have been another one or two unknown secret components of the ammunition to increase immediate acceleration from the launcher.
@@Demo_Camera_Guy Ha! But at least you got to shoot one of the world's most unusual weapons. With what is possibly the single most rare form of ammunition there is. More rare now. 😛
I know they're impractical as all hell, but those gyrojets are just so freaking cool from a technology perspective. Especially when you really think about what they had to work with in the 60's. Awesome content and thank you to Joel for sharing!!
makes you wonder what could be done with modern tech, because honestly the amount of power those things have and low recoil is amazing, and i think they could really benefit from a much more thought out design
They have a use, just the reliability of the rounds is the problem. They are designed to fire underwater and in space. Underwater they do better than conventional bullets, but not much is great underwater. In space though they help with Newton's third law of motion. "If two bodies exert forces on each other, these forces have the same magnitude but opposite directions". Basically in space a light machine gun is also a great way to do somersaults backwards when fired. You have mass, but no gravity to align you to the ground. So 5.56 at 1200 foot pounds of force going forward also means that going backwards, enough to push a 250 pound man back a few inches a second.
Its so crazy seeing Mikey working with Matt. I was watching Matt while me and Mikey were in highschool together. Glad that boy is doing well for himself.
A close friend (now passed) worked for MBA while the Gyrojet was in production, and he had several of them in his collection along with a handful of ammunition. While I got to handle them, we never fired a round. Even 30+ years ago the ammo was very rare and not especially stable. Glad to see some video of someone firing one!

Love how this channel shows such a realistic, laid back, FUN, prospective on guns and shooting. Our country is so divided anymore and everyone is made out to be a character of themselves. You show that the majority of gun owners and collectors are just average everyday guys with a passion that if it was trigonometry instead of guns they would be called dorky! Just because they are into guns shooting and collecting doesn’t mean they are also separatist, anti government, conspiracy nuts, sitting around their bunkers with machine guns in their underwear wearing tinfoil hats. Instead, they are probably just super nice approachable people who get giddy like a little kid with their passion for guns.
Well if it was made for space, the biggest advantage of this compared to a normal gun is that you don't have as much of a kick back from the gun. if you floating in space the kick back will push you as well and you will probably go spinning. this shot doesn't push on you as much. pretty cool stuff. tnx for the video and Hi from the Netherlands
This is by far some of the coolest video i've seen, like those things look like the rockets that come off ships a little burst of speed and then the engines fire and the thing zips off. Thats so cool looking I almost wish all guns were like that just cause gun fights would look sick at night

@@daniel_f4050 Yup. I seem to recall having read somewhere (so, y'know, take it with a grain of salt) that it has a "launch" charge that gets it out of the barrel before igniting the rocket-propellant. It basically functions like the world's most disappointing RPG.
@@embershanerox7529 with modern tech we should be able to run computer simulations for more reliable burn and flight characteristics, we have more reliable propellant mixtures and we can manufacture those rounds to much tighter tolerances and with higher reliability than back in the '50s. @@JaredLetoSelfSuck Obviously this wasn't the cost of ammunition when they were on the market. The cost is because they are now so rare. Probably the same with reliability since all this ammunition is so old, and I doubt they rounds are as well sealed as regular ammunition.

If they started making these again and the ammo it would for sure have a market. Also It's a shame the slow-mo guys couldn't have been on the ranch for this one! 😊
With modern 3d printing and laser welding/sintering it’d be way cheaper and more reliable
Slow Mo guys should definitely be on this video

Just so you know, this was only a few miles from where you are shooting.
Thank you for this video.
This is one of the coolest things I've seen on this channel. The slow mo is so sick. Thanks to Joel for showing us this.
As a Brit I must quote "Monty Python", are you ready 'And now for something completely different'. What a show we had rockets, squibs, misfires, crouch shots, ricochets, zombie head shots and more. A big thanks to Joel, and everyone there for a great post, thank you.

Big UP for Joel Mr. Wonderful! Thanks so much dude! Love from Italy!
Matt not succumbing to peer pressure at the end by not firing the shot is some true character development!
That guy pointing the gun at his own face at 15:43 made me flinch.
That was the squib round, so you should definitely flinch! If somehow there was a delay before more propellant, it would be a very different video. Probably safe (enough) but not a fate that should be tempted.
I really wanted to see it travel long distance, or try to shoot through a really long chunk of ballistic gel.
Sure, they should have fired more distance shots. Thou the one fired didn't look too accurate. I thought that thing were super accurate but seemingly it depends on the production quality of these rocket bullets.
@@wurstelei1356 modern ammo for it probably would be fairly accurate, but from what Ive read before, they were notoriously inaccurate
That was some of the coolest slo mo footage I've seen on this channel
Joel seems like just a genuinely really nice guy, would love to see more of his collection
15:32 I know they only loaded one round... I mean rocket, but that reaction of looking down the barrel made me flinch.
Came to the comments to say the same thing
This one round actually can shot anytime from the barrel. It could still have remains of explosives inside of it.
@@evren1079God out of every comment this is like the most logical one about this. I applaud you for having a brain 👏👏👏

It was not.
@@Jpm463 yeah dropped my heart seeing him about to get one to the cranium and he looked a totally of 2 times
This round is like... The primitive version of the warhammer 40k boltgun round. This is insane.
It was the inspiration for the boltgun by the games workshop creators back in the 80's. They have talked about it widely before.
@@TaylorLiam87 shit man I didn't know that. Awesome
The only reason I knew what this was previously was because Jonathan Ferguson referenced it when reviewing a 40k videogame, lol.
And thus...we are one step closer to the grim darkness of the far future...
Gotta be one of the best episodes in recent times. The non stop innuendos, cool interesting gun and chilled guests 🙌🏻
All that just for us to shoot it at garbage in 2023..
@@Demo_Camera_Guy Ha! But at least you got to shoot one of the world's most unusual weapons. With what is possibly the single most rare form of ammunition there is. More rare now. 😛

makes you wonder what could be done with modern tech, because honestly the amount of power those things have and low recoil is amazing, and i think they could really benefit from a much more thought out design
@@sir.phillip2697 agreed!! That's for the rocket scientists to figure out. LOL, I wish I had that kind of knowledge, but I'm just a lowly chef. LOL

What an amazing opportunity. It is truly a unique firearm. So awesome of you to have this on the channel. Thank you
Well if it was made for space, the biggest advantage of this compared to a normal gun is that you don't have as much of a kick back from the gun. if you floating in space the kick back will push you as well and you will probably go spinning. this shot doesn't push on you as much. pretty cool stuff. tnx for the video and Hi from the Netherlands

@@daniel_f4050 Yup.
I seem to recall having read somewhere (so, y'know, take it with a grain of salt) that it has a "launch" charge that gets it out of the barrel before igniting the rocket-propellant.
It basically functions like the world's most disappointing RPG.
I'd love to see someone start re manufacturing those rounds, it's just so cool seeing them speed up after they fire.
With specs and the correct molds, I'd imagine you could get the price down, but if they're hard to manufacture, that's a different story.
@@embershanerox7529 with modern tech we should be able to run computer simulations for more reliable burn and flight characteristics, we have more reliable propellant mixtures and we can manufacture those rounds to much tighter tolerances and with higher reliability than back in the '50s. We should also be able to develop a more reliable launch platform, especially since it would only need a feed mechanism but no extractor.
also, with a 50 year advancement in precision manufacturing, the rounds would probably be a lot more accurate and reliable.
