Awesome detailed information brother. My VDC is a glorified boost controller now with my Protune. On an external wastegate setup and 3 port boost solenoid. I = 13psi (Spring Pressure) , S = 15psi, S# = 18psi. Before in stock mode, VDC was pretty much pointless, and always left it in S Mode.

It's not about front or rear bias, it's about how much locking force is applied in the electronic LSD of the center diff. The bias is dictated by the planetary gears and therefore always fixed at 41:59. This is hardware-driven and cannot be changed by electronics, which only control the increase or decrease in the LSD effect of the center diff.

Love the videos brother but you are going over the DCCD and SI-DRIVE systems. The dial for Intelligent (I), Sport (S) & Sport Sharp (# ) is the SI-Drive system. Actually just tried the SI Drive earlier today for the first time but still driving through my "break-in" period so I didn't go WOT yet😅. Definitely gonna try the Auto -/+ out tomorrow for sure!

Extremely helpful video!! Just bought my 2018 STI, and its the sickest car I've ever driven. Been playing around with this already, but this definitely helps me be more dialed with things.
You also have aftermarket DCCD controllers that add quite a bit more than stock. MapDCCD and Spiider Plus, both are more sophisticated and can be customized as well as have better auto settings. Although this more applies to a WRX with swapped STI 6 speeds.

Thanks for the video. Just got my 2020 STI last week (coming from a 2000 Integra GSR that I had for 20 years)... I didn't really understand the owner's manuals descriptions of the DCCD auto settings, but I definitely agree that "Auto -" clearly feels the best in clear conditions.
I found in my 06 sti most of the time I have it almost unlocked fully (usually in the second position from the bottom) and it stops the rear diff from doing the annoying clunk between gears at low speeds. If I have it fully unlocked it will do it almost all the time unless i'm accelerating hard between gears. When its wet roads i'll put it halfway locked for better front end control, but if it is snow/ice i'll keep it almost fully locked. Only time I ever lock it is when I am drifting in really deep snow, I do notice the steering get much stiffer as I increase the diff lock as well. Fuel economy is effected greatly by having it more locked as well, so that's why I mainly keep it unlocked. In auto mode I can feel my car almost always has my diffs locked cause my steering gets heavy and you can hear the front diff wine more. Love having the option to change between the settings though, manual mode is definitely the way to go!
Just takes the time to learn how to use the manual setting and the best way to do it is by playing with it. Seems like you've got yours dialed in and figured out!
I’m learning a ton from these videos man. Hands down the best quality Subaru videos I’ve seen on here. I have a couple questions in regards to my sti I just purchased. Is there any place people can reach out to you with questions?
Honestly i couldn't go back. The benefits of both are like a different car and awesome to change it up. Auto + is a beast that pulls you through tough turns if you can manhandle the torque steer. True AWD feel. Wish we had split % #s for +/- and all manual ranges. I believe LOCK is locked 50/50.
I loved the video, was hoping for more explanation of the manual mode just for a better understanding. If you have a video on that already I’m missing can you link it?
Hey just got my '21 STI and I'm completely in love with it. I really like your use of the SI drive for different boost levels. Is that something that is reasonable to have done at a shop during tuning?
Thank you for explaining everything so well! I been trying to decide to get wrx or sti for many years. DCCD and VDC sounds great but thats an extra gadget or equipment that ads more weight to the car and causes reliability to go down because its more stuff to break down. I wish they made the WRX with the STI transmission and the 2.5 liter and sti turbo because I really don't like the idea of adjusting all these nobs. WRX seems much simpler but it has weaker transmission and rev hang and less power than STI. Plus sti can be modified very heavily up to 600 horsepower with factory transmission. So they are very different cars on the internals.
Auto + and - is not bias front or Rear. it's just how much force will there be to keep the C Diff engaged. + means the C diff is firm with very little slip that your rear wheel speed with match front wheel speed if either wheel lost traction. - means the C diff is loosely engaged and power will be send to the wheel that lost traction. Please refer to page 7-20 on the Owner's Manual which makes everything crystal clear.....
I appreciate your time on all these video's. I have wanted a WRX for over 10 years, finally purchased a 2020 STI about 2 weeks ago and i have learned so much from your video's. Question, once i start using OTS Maps or protunes, does the VDC still change the percentage of throttle response, or does it stop working all together?
@@Smeedia Thank you! So far I have only put a Cobb SF and an Accessport 3. But I have collected parts to change out the exhaust completely, J-Pipe, New turbo controller, new fuel pump, 1050x injectors, waiting on one sensor and ill have that all installed and protuned. I was thinking of working on getting forged internals next but i am really unsure of where to go after that.
'SI-Drive' and 'VDC' are two completely different things. What you're referring to as VDC is actually SI-Drive. It does what you describe and I agree that it's pretty pointless. Although on automatic transmissions it's supposed to change shift points and the way it shifts, so maybe it makes a bit more sense there. VDC, on the other hand, is basically ESP - electronic stability program. It uses accelerometers (G-sensors) and gyros to detect 'unusual movement' (a.k.a. sliding out of control) and than cuts power and / or applies individual brakes to stabilize the vehicle.
I really hate sounding like a fanboy.. Hearing your car driving, and considering you've done so many things I've wanted to do and do myself, hearing how it sounds accelerating I know I have my Protune right.. Sounds exactly like mine! Makes me feel like I'm doing it right! Only problem was trying to put a full 3" DP+N1 Invidia Exhaust. Too much flow, and would overboost constantly in my '17 STi Limited. Had to go back to the factory DP for now until I can install an up-pipe, external wastegate and boost controller. Just was shocked at how much the factory turbo wants to make boost at 55k miles still!
Great topic to cover and NASIOC the Bible Of Subaru’s 🤣 thanks again about rhino ramps used this weekend for oil change on the daily! owner of 05 sti Dccd and love the use of manual vs auto
Just got a '20 STI a few months ago. I figure for most driving, leaving DCCD in manual and with full "minus" puts it as open as possible (lowest chance of binding) and since it's not auto, it won't be constantly adjusting things so they aren't wearing out as fast. Make sense? Also, in traffic, I find Sport+ best because it's easiest to avoid stalling if the engine responds immediately ☺️ Does the SI Drive setting matter when in cruise control, given that the throttle is fully automated then? 🤔
Im protuned by Johnson tuning. I still feel a big difference when going through the VDC modes. Intelligent wont let my boost dont past 8lbs. Sport gives it a nice response. And sport# is too agressive lol. I hate that mode. Its good for racing but normal driving its too agressive and responsive. If i drive in sport mode for a while and switch to sport#, i find my self over revving the car in first gear.
Does c-diff make the car default to sport sharp. Or is this completely different and I choose this setting. Would you leave it in sport sharp or sport when your in auto minus. Thanks, and great video. Just trying to understand this system better.
Thank you. I had the +/- backwards on my stock 2019 and absolutely hated the car each time i tried it. C# works well. for the last As for handling, it’s a heavy car and it tends to understeer but i will try your suggestion of auto-
Hey man, you got it pretty wrong on how the DCCD works. It doesn't bias front or rear. It simply modulates the amount of lock up force the DCCD clutches apply. Also VDC is not that knob. That's called SI-Drive, which is just a tune mapping changer.
Awesome Video, Gave me more of an insight into my own car! I had a fair idea but hearing how you worded it made everything alot more clearer and i now feel more confident with playing with the settings in different weather conditions. Thanks my man! Love the videos! Certainly earned my sub!
have another question. i have a 15 sti limited. what does 1) LSD torque 2) Traction torque 3) Initial LSD torque (maximum) 4) Initial LSD torque (minimum) A) Initial LSD torque (adjustable) B) Mechanical LSD torque
Love your videos man! Totally right about Auto Minus also. Hey, what do you think, install my 4th cyl coolant mod and IAG AOS on my STi with 11k miles, or wait until warranty is over? I got extended until 100k but I kinda want to do it now for longevity of the motor. Thanks for all your hard work man, you’ve got real talent for this!
Smeedia Yeah I’ve actually watched it a few times 😂 every time I watch it I lean more towards doing it! Thanks for replying...keep up the awesome content! You’re killin’ it with the updates!
Going to depend on track conditions but I would start in auto and see how the car feels then swap over to manual, start halfway in manual and adjust from there
@@hamzahahmed2642 definitely don't drive with it locked on dry pavement. That is something that you can use on loose gravel or snow. Jeep Rubicons can lock their front and rear differentials for mud, mud snow, gravel, and rock crawling. With both vehicles, the wheels naturally need turn at different speeds on dry pavement. When you lock up the differentials on dry pavement the wheels cannot turn at different speeds like they normally do and will bind up and cause heavy wear on your drive train components. Loose or slippery surfaces allow the wheels to slip greatly reducing the wear on the drive train.
7:40 : Haha, you never used Intelligence?? (JK, I can't get that lame joke outta my head!) Thanks for going through the DCCD and VDC systems! Now I'm looking forward even more to getting an STi !!
When you say auto minus do you just toggle the switch to the right down one click or do you hit Manuel first and then move it down. Sorry for the dumb question. Great vid btw.
Been watching your videos for a minute, yet I cant get over how bad ass your ride looks. Love the set up. Edit: did you have to measure your garage at any point to make sure your chosen ride would fit?
Appreciate the support! apologies for the delayed response sometimes comments get buried! but no it just happened to fit lol barley but fit haha, and thank you it has quickly become my money pit!
I've read that some folks like to set the DCCD to Manual in a fully open setting (or low) to get the cars torque to feel more rear biased. Any reason you would choose Auto (-) over Manual in the fully open diff setting?
I fellow someone who dropped the sti trans into a wrx with the fa takes alot to do it and when they switched everything they needed to the light in the middle of there dash for differential blinks guess because its the fa engine and there different systems in it
Hi mate love your videos, I'm really considering buying a new STI, can you damage your diff using auto + or - if you use them in the wrong conditions or is it completely safe?
You really have to dig into it and beat on the car to do any real damage in auto plus or minus. Pretty safe settings to use. Also appreciate the feedback! 😁
For what I understood Auto the car will detect your activity and do it for you. Auto - better handling and more fun in dry conditions. Auto + when it snows or rains for better control and traction. I’m pretty sure they’re all safe that’s what the car was designed for. Just don’t fool around with the Manual if you’re not sure what it does. Just stick to Auto -+ and you’ll be good.
love the chanel bro i have learned so much from it thank you! quick question my diff has been going into lock and blinking it has happen a few times now is it time to do a differential fluid change?
With the road trip I’m taking to NC would it make it a fun drive to throw it in auto minus and sport sharp? I’ll be on the expressway all the way to NC
Is it possible to upgrade to the 6 piston calipers on the front of a newer wrx? A video of that install would be awesome! Or an upgraded brake kit Installation pretty much.
So, hearing about your tuning replacing your SI Drive modes raises a question for me - on my 19 STi I just recently added a Cobb access port and the SF intake w/box. I flashed the correct OTS tune for it (waiting until I get a down pipe and a few other pieces before I pay to get it pro tuned), and the SI mode is automatically set to intelligent after the flash completes - does the tune nullify sport and sport#? If I change the mode will that mess my tune or anything? Thanks, love your videos b
I forgot to ask as I just got my 2021 STI brand new! so far I’ve just tinted the windows! Any suggestions of what I should get done next? Like a must do?
@@Smeedia Thanks for getting back to me! And yeah I’m tryna keep my warranty in tact yes! Also I use it daily and I’m also tryna keep it stoke basically until warranty is over at least. And basically I love the car but When it comes to mechanical part I don’t know anything besides changing a flat tire and Driving it ofcourse 😂! Basically all I’m tryna ask how do I Maintain It well while I don’t know much about the mechanical part? I watch a lot of your videos and basically you do most of your mods by yourself! What’s your advice on someone like me? Thanks again for all your help👍🏾
Living in the Midwest, when we get snow or ice, what’s the preferred settings for both? Also when it’s raining what’s your settings for both? I’m on stock STi recently bought so she’s still in break period at the time of this comment :). Thank you advance.
For snow and Ice I would start out in the auto + setting to get a feel for the car a little more. Once you get more comfortable I would play with the manual settings to find a sweet spot that fits your driving style for optimal traction 😁 When it rains I just leave it in auto mode and let the computer adjust for traction. 😅 Also congratulations on the new car!
Smeedia Thank you. I do appreciate the response on that topic. I’m going to allow more playing time after break in but I’m excited. Big difference between 17 WRX to a 2020 STi. I can feel the gear change much smoother and the suspension in handling has already amazed me. Looking forward to a fun time with the car.

2017 sti i set my dccd to to the rear and tried drifting in a wet parking lot today and could only get it to brake loose when i turned to the left? It wants to grab anytime i try it to the right. I dont know why
I want to use it for drifting I want to have the option of all-wheel drive but I want to be able to put more of my power to the rear end so I can drink with the car when I want to is this actually feasible with this setup? I would really love it if I could manually adjust it by literally turning a dial and it would put more percentage to rear or two front depending on dial turn but I'm okay with it being more digital plus and minus I'm just wondering can I actually use this in the manual - setting for more of a drift mode? I'm guessing I need more VDC but I'm not sure is this something you could access via computer and make adjustments to where in Fallout it could be all rear-wheel-drive but any other two settings it could 50/50 or what's the deal I would really like a setting where I put it all the way and number three and it's full rear-wheel number to 50/50 and number one either vectoring between front and rear wheel for best traction or maybe even a full front wheel drive mode setting. Is this even possible? Like make Sport Plus all rear wheel sport all-wheel and a regular drive mode that is just front wheel?
I am aware, for some reason I was calling thr SI Drive VDC, don't know why. But whenever I say VDC I am referring to SI Drive.

@@Smeedia fmic was my thought, then get internals up to par before messing with a bigger rotated turbo
what made that oil pressure go off you think ? your face wss funny during that part. great vid man
Lol just a dip in pressure when I got off the throttle 😅 did make my heart race fir a second though lol
Imma get an sti soon I'm glad I watch this video bc I did not know what this was
What generation you looking at getting? 🙌
2017 or 2020
Both solid years 🔥
@@Smeedia but its gonna be a progress before i get one i let you when i do
I can’t believe I been missing this mode 🤯
Definitely fun to play with 🔥😁
'SI-Drive' and 'VDC' are two completely different things.
Left a note in the description that I pulled thr names backwards but that you for adding the clarification!
Not at all and totally acceptable, glad to hear that your build is going the way you want it to 🙌 the turbo wants all of the boost!!!!
Man, great video and an amazing explanation. I really understand how the systems works. Thank you so much for your time. Greetings from Costa Rica
❤❤❤
This was a great video. I will definitely test drive the new STI and get a great feel for its new features. Stay safe brother.
❤❤❤
Great topic to cover and NASIOC the Bible Of Subaru’s 🤣 thanks again about rhino ramps used this weekend for oil change on the daily! owner of 05 sti Dccd and love the use of manual vs auto
Those Rhino ramps are a LIFE SAVER glad you enjoyed the video!
Just got a '20 STI a few months ago.
I figure for most driving, leaving DCCD in manual and with full "minus" puts it as open as possible (lowest chance of binding) and since it's not auto, it won't be constantly adjusting things so they aren't wearing out as fast.
Make sense?
Also, in traffic, I find Sport+ best because it's easiest to avoid stalling if the engine responds immediately ☺️
Does the SI Drive setting matter when in cruise control, given that the throttle is fully automated then? 🤔
When it cruise control it won't really matter the SI drive just adjustments the sensitivity if the gas pedal 🔥
Sounds like it has a solid tine on it and is a lot of fun to drive though 😍
Another good video man! Was scrolling on Instagram and saw your ad ;)
Glad that it worked lol never used it before so was curious if it would actually share the posting 😅
Smeedia It’s working for me! I follow a lot of STI/JDM pages, so instagram shares your ad with people who they think would like your content!
Great video, I don’t mess with mine as much as I should, just wasn’t really sure about it. Very cool man😎👍🏻👍🏻
It's worth playing with, really makes a difference just from day to day driving 😁
A good video. I can go play with these settings in my 2020 STI. Oh yeahhhh.
🥳🥳🥳
The dccd and 6 speed is one of the main reasons I got my sti hatch.
C# works well. for the last
As for handling, it’s a heavy car and it tends to understeer but i will try your suggestion of auto-
Love your vids man, never enough subie content 😀
Have a lot more on the way 🙌🙌🙌 appreciate the support 😁😁😁
11:35 love the tint on the prius lol
Lmao had to go back and re-watch it 🤣🤣🤣
Hey man, you got it pretty wrong on how the DCCD works.
Appreciate the support my friend! And best way to learn is to play with it a bit, you'll notice the differences in how it drives 😁🔥
Just realized I live 5 mins from you lol. I also got a 2017 sti limited completely stock
Lol theres a few local people who live near by! What color is yours? May have seen it drive by before!
I have a black sti. Have only had it for 2 weeks but I love it so far.
Great video,So it is true that full lock on dry termac will blow the drive train? Daaamn I m not sure if Iam ready for that responsability
Its definitely not the best for the car to do so 😅
My default setting in my 21’ sti is Intelligent why is urs sport?
That's just what it's programmed to, I belive in 2018 they updated it so default was Intellegent mode
i like how the vdc controls boost levels. 8psi in intelligent and 17psi in sport and sportsharp gives all the boost earlier.
Definitely gives the car a little extra spice 🔥🙌
have another question. i have a 15 sti limited. what does
1) LSD torque
2) Traction torque
3) Initial LSD torque (maximum)
4) Initial LSD torque (minimum)
A) Initial LSD torque (adjustable)
B) Mechanical LSD torque
Love your videos man! Totally right about Auto Minus also. Hey, what do you think, install my 4th cyl coolant mod and IAG AOS on my STi with 11k miles, or wait until warranty is over? I got extended until 100k but I kinda want to do it now for longevity of the motor. Thanks for all your hard work man, you’ve got real talent for this!
Appreciate the feedback! As for voiding your warranty I would swing back to my warranty video and weigh the options. Personally I say send it 😅
Smeedia Yeah I’ve actually watched it a few times 😂 every time I watch it I lean more towards doing it! Thanks for replying...keep up the awesome content! You’re killin’ it with the updates!
Where you get tour steering wheel done at? Or where can I get it done at? I love your channel
Thank you and it is the OEM Type RA steering wheel, I got mine off of Rallysport directs website 🙌
Oh yeah baby I just got one. Imma go try this. With ⚠️
Thanks for making the video. For the occasional trip to the drag strip, what settings for DCCD would u recommend?
Going to depend on track conditions but I would start in auto and see how the car feels then swap over to manual, start halfway in manual and adjust from there
Smeedia I compared locked and one bar, and I had a significant time decrease. I heard that can be bad for the diff tho?
I’m wondering what size rims and tires he’s running love it
18x9.5 +38 on a 255/35 🙏🙏🙏
@@Smeedia thanks man cool I’ll send you a pic when there on my car
When you say auto minus do you just toggle the switch to the right down one click or do you hit Manuel first and then move it down. Sorry for the dumb question. Great vid btw.
Just push the DCCD switch down toward shr rear if the car and it'll switch it for you 🙏
Love your subi man! I've always liked them since I went in a blacked out turbo wrx when I was 9
Thank you! They're definitely fun cars 😁🔥
Lol every wrx is turbo
I fellow someone who dropped the sti trans into a wrx with the fa takes alot to do it and when they switched everything they needed to the light in the middle of there dash for differential blinks guess because its the fa engine and there different systems in it
I believe that's Bader built, seems like a cool dude and has some pretty cool cars!
@@Smeedia yeah im saving to have a short block from him trying to figure out heads and suggestions?
Just subscribed, great info! Keep those videos coming!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Appreciate the support! More 🔥 coming at ya this week 😁
@@Smeedia AWESOME!🔥🔥🔥🤩
Something else I've noticed....the car is much happier making slow, tight turns in auto minus compared to leaving it in auto.
Also true, I've noticed the same thing
love the chanel bro i have learned so much from it thank you! quick question my diff has been going into lock and blinking it has happen a few times now is it time to do a differential fluid change?
With the road trip I’m taking to NC would it make it a fun drive to throw it in auto minus and sport sharp? I’ll be on the expressway all the way to NC
If its all straight road driving auto (-) won't make too much of a difference
Very well explained. Thank you.
🙌🙌🙌🙌
is it possible to add this to a wrx or would it require a complete center differential swap to be compatible
You'd have to swap the drive train 🙏
Is it possible to upgrade to the 6 piston calipers on the front of a newer wrx? A video of that install would be awesome! Or an upgraded brake kit Installation pretty much.
Oh yeah! But going to be costly 😅 I would go with the 4 pot brembos for the cost savings though
@@Smeedia so 6 piston calipers is pretty much overkill if you don't plan on putting the car on the track, which I don't any time soon 😅
@@MakoCrisisVII. correct 🤣
It shouldent, but I do know that it will default into I but ahouldent stay that way every start up 🤔
@@Smeedia Awesome! Thanks for the info!
Maybe I see it wrong, but are you always shift gears around 3/4 rpm ? Or only on highway?
I forgot to ask as I just got my 2021 STI brand new! so far I’ve just tinted the windows! Any suggestions of what I should get done next? Like a must do?
Congrats on the car! And what are your goals with it and do you wanna void your warranty or keep it in tact?
Once you get more comfortable I would play with the manual settings to find a sweet spot that fits your driving style for optimal traction 😁
When it rains I just leave it in auto mode and let the computer adjust for traction. 😅
Also congratulations on the new car!
@@mattm920 the transmission is the biggest selling point to me for the STI it's the best teams that I have felt out of any car I've owned. Follow up with how you like it after playing with it! Always enjoy hearing everyone's experience! 😁
Great vid. U ever gonna so a vid while on the track?
Once summer time comes around we will be out on the track every chance I can get 😁
2017 sti i set my dccd to to the rear and tried drifting in a wet parking lot today and could only get it to brake loose when i turned to the left? It wants to grab anytime i try it to the right. I dont know why
Stupid random question but are weighted shift knobs bad for the transmission ?
hi luv the channel but i have a dumb question if my 17 sti is 40 front 60 rear in auto DCCD do u know what numbers would be in auto + and auto -?
But for an attempt to drift what would be the right setting on si drive.
