How to replace the cabin air filter in a 2003 GMC Sierra - Force TV 051

  • Useful information for anyone with a 2003-2013 GMC Sierra or Chevrolet Silverado related to cabin air filters. I watched other videos on this process but didn't check the details before starting. I was told when I bought the truck new in 2003 that it had cabin air filters, but GM made a change the previous year that even the dealership wasn't aware of. Be sure and watch before trying to change your GM truck cabin air filters!
    UPDATE
    There is a retrofit kit available on Amazon - you have to cut an access hatch where the filter should be and install the included filter and new hatch cover for the created hole. Several people have reported that it works, is not complex but is difficult to cut in the awkward position. Good luck if you try it!

    I've been wanting to change mine for awhile till I found your video right after I watched yours saying there isn't one I saw one saying you have to remove the blower fan and you are able to see it so now I'm totally confused 🤔

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Roland Mazzucchi I understand-there are lots of differing opinions for sure. I took my under dash apart and could not find it so I started researching and found the memo from GM to their dealers that said there is not one in that year range. There is a ‘place’ for one in the blower case, but you have to cut a hole in the plastic to get the filter in, and then install an aftermarket door hatch to close the hole (there is a link to that hatch in the description). If you are handy with tools and working under a dash you can certainly add one.

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @GLS.25 It’s most likely whatever is inside the blower area where the filter should be. You can cut a slot into the housing - replacement doors are on Amazon, dig out the material in the and replace with a new filter. Big job but it might be your only option to kill that smell.

      @dollabillbrunson8107 I think it would - GM was clear about dropping the filter in those models but the parts supplier never updated their books. Then why do I have low airflow coming out of my vents

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  ปีที่แล้ว

      @7chilj That’s the big question isn’t it? Several possibilities; the cabin air intakes are clogged with leaves, sticks, etc. the can be located against the windshield. Also apparently there IS a cabin air filter in some models but it’s not replaceable, since GM removed the access hatch. With the link in the description you can find an aftermarket door for the filter area and add it yourself. It’s not that easy. Reports are that the filter there is clogged and nasty and blocks airflow. Pull it out after cutting a new hatch, put in a new filter, install hatch and maybe things blow better….

  • @shepherd_2975
    @shepherd_2975 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MaryAlice McCrae Hi MaryAlice! Chances are you have some kind of blockage. Another truck owner noted here a week or so ago he took his blower case apart and found a rats nest inside. Others have reported they cut the bottom of the blower case and added an aftermarket hatch cover. Inside they found a filter that was not designed to be removed, which was clogged. They pulled that out, put a new filter in and closed the hatch to better airflow. Not everyone who has added the hatch has reported the permanent air filter finding so I’m not sure if that’s common.

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The GM service bulletin says they redesigned the blower case and there was no place for a filter in the new design. Seems suspicious since you can buy a hatch on Amazon and cut a hole in the blower case and add a filter. My guess is it was a short sighted cost cutting measure...
