I went to one of those liberal seminaries near the U of C that teach textual criticism. I am so grateful for this education, and it is so much fun to have these reviews with the masterful Bart Ehrman. It is also a lot of fun to watch the scales fall from evangelical eyes as they learn this new way of understanding scripture. I went to an evangelical college, too, so I have had a pretty broad training in perspectives on the Bible. I’m an atheist at this point. But this bible stuff? I just love it.

LOL 😆 his views are from your atheist perspective: conformation bias at its best.

@davidjanbaz7728 You strike me as an imbecile. Like you Christians don't have your biases? They were a Christian and now they're an atheist, so they know both sides and research shows that atheists in general know more about religion than theists, hence *why* they're atheists.
And like you can talk. No matter how many times people show you the Bible is wrong and that it's historical fiction, you desperately cling to your dishonest apologists, so don't talk about others having biases.

@davidjanbaz7728 there isn't a single atheist perspective. Atheism just means a person lacks a belief or conviction that a god exists. In reality, there can be a thousand and one different perspectives that atheists can have about the bible. And some of those perspectives that atheists can have will disagree with other perspectives that atheists can have. But you probably don't care

I have just counted my collection of Bart Ehrman books, currently at 11, in addition of two of his textbooks. I'm unable to say which one is my favorite but, a well-rounded book that I could recommend to my Evangelical friends would be The Triumph of Christianity.

8:00 This is a great explanation of the process. My thanks to Dr. Ehrman.

I'm sorry I can't remember the details but I recall Dr. Ehrman describing some early figure, perhaps Clement, quoting and referring to passages of either Mark or Matthew. (I don't remember which.) But these passages were not like anything we now describe from that gospel. His conclusion was that there had been an earlier gospel by that name, now lost, and that the one we have today might bear little resemblance to it.
It seems to me this contradicts his description of the way 5th century copies appear to be accurate. The situation he describes starting at 5:09 may well have happened. In the end, all those 5th century copies are descendants of what must have been only a handful of manuscripts in the very earliest years of the Church. How many copies of the gospels existed in 100AD? Probably not many. By 200AD how many more? Still not a whole lot. Then you get into the Nicean Council period, where there was a strong drive to unify disparate texts and eliminate theologies the council didn't want to propagate. So material from the 5th century would likely have been copies of post-Nicean, "harmonized" versions.
I'm really skeptical that 5th century manuscripts bear much resemblance to lost late 1st century sources. And we haven't even talked about all the writings that were rejected by the Council.

    Genesis 4
    Names of God Bible
    Cain Murders Abel
4 Adam made love to his wife Eve. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have gotten the man that Yahweh promised.”
    Adam’s Godly Descendants-Adam to Enosh
25 Adam made love to his wife again. She gave birth to a son and named him Seth, because she said, “Elohim has given me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to worship Yahweh.
    🤔
So, Yahweh’s "man" is the first murderer and Elohim's children are Godly Descendants? My trust in the Genesis 2 character has reached 0%.
