Traditional Bow Hunting Hogs on an Island

- This week the boys and I head out on a unique bow hunting trip, traditional bow hunting hogs and whitetail deer on an island! Join us in the land of live oaks and Spanish moss, palm trees, hogs, and the little island deer that call the island home. There’s plenty of action in this bowhunting vid, and plenty of mosquitoes too. After hearing a group of wild hogs in a palmetto thicket, I slip in close and put an arrow through both shoulders of a big wild boar with my selfbow. Fen gets to take the lead on his first blood trail.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

Hey Mr. Clay, I just wanted to say thank you for all these videos. I’ve been traditional bow hunting for 4 years now (I’m 16 btw) and I taught myself how to shoot using your videos. I’m hoping to shoot my first buck here in Kanas this year. But if it weren’t for you and your videos I never would’ve began hunting. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you and good luck on your deer hunt in Idaho.
💪🏽🇺🇸🏹
Keep at and I am sure you will succeed. A day spent in the wild is always a treasure.
Dude good job! I self taught too and Clay’s instructional videos helped me tremendously! 8 years bow hunting. Keep it up bro I started at like 25!
Best message yet
I got my first Kansas buck this year and hope that you got yours before the end of the season but if you didn’t just keep up the grind and I’m sure you will
Good job Fin! You're gonna be a pro tracker in no time! Just keep listening to your dad. He knows what he's talking about and he's a great teacher!
Your sons have a great privilege to be taught these ways by their father. Coming from a single mother whose father walked out on my mom and then the same happened with my own daughter, this instruction is truly priceless. I’m so thankful to have found your channel. My daughter and I love learning alongside your boys. Thank you for taking us along and walking us through the process. Really enjoyed Fin’s vlog at the end, too. Y’all are doing a great job with these boys.
You should check our Becka Garris here on TH-cam and on Instagram. She is a mom who has always carried her daughter with her when she bow hunts, fishes, works in the garden just everywhere. Her daughter Isabella is an absolute gem.
@@donniewillis2926 Thank you!! I will check her out!
Wish I had had a dad like this growing up. Thank you for your videos Mr. Hayes.
One thing I wish I would have learned earlier in my bowhunting career is stepping back and looking at the bigger picture of where the animal would have gone, as opposed to solely relying on seeing blood. Great video as always, Clay! Great job, Fen!
Thanks Levi
Path of least resistance
This is proper parenting, cant wait to take my kid hunting when he's old enough. Good job mate.
Very true!
I say so, if things ever happen the kid knows how to get food.
this kid reminds me of my youngest son. his eye movement, the way he "listens" to you, the way his mind is working....his mannerisms are exactly like my youngest.
I absolutely love that you take your son hunting and are teaching him and, in turn, passing on the old ways. That is clearly a son who has respect for his father. Well done.
You are teaching your son to be an animal abuser. God be merciful to you, you need it!
@@bhbh-rm5tu Let's play "Spot the beta male." I'll go first.......
Clay, as someone whos never had many opportunities or guidance for hunting growing up you've been an invaluable resource and source of drive for me to pursue more of this lifestyle. I'm getting a late start at 28 after only hunting squirrels and doing a lot of hiking in my time so I can only hope to achieve a fraction of what you have. Thank you for all your videos and insight, you're an astounding woodsman, father and role model for any and all who see your work.
Thanks Lonnie
A worthy hunt and reward….scouting, stick bow, tracking in some good bush, dragging a bit….all the elements of a memorable hunt. Well done sir, well done indeed. You and the boy earned that bacon.
Thanks much
It’s so cool the way you’re teaching your kids. My father stopped hunting before I came along. He took me camping all the time and fishing sometimes but I missed out on the hunting. Having him take over the camera at the end was also cool.
Never was a big bow hunter but my dad got me my first compound at like 12....before that it was your box store kids bows....now I'm pushing 40 and thinking about getting back into it with a traditional! Love watching your videos
Nice time, Clay, thanks for taking us along. My buddy at work is from East Idaho originally and said he'd take me and my stickbow up there to chase whitetails next year after seeing my take my first elk season seriously. Pretty excited about the next video now.
👍
Be proud of yourself and your dad finn. True hunters
Finn you did an amazing job on tracking that hog!! Soon you will be on your own hunting and tracking your own game. I know your dad is super proud of you, as am I. Clay I admire you so much to get your boys in the great outdoors to hunt, fish, explore and camp. I am sure when they are grown with children of their own they will remember these days fondly. Merry Christmas from the Willis family to your family!!
Thanks Donnie
I had to quickly open this one while I'm at work. A couple of minutes in and I can't wait to watch the rest on my break.
At this point you're basically the Bob Ross of traditional bows, Clay. I mean who doesn't like to listen this man talk? Clay def has "the voice" haha, and I don't think I've ever heard him say a single ignorant or annoying sentence in any of his videos this whole time, which on youtube should constitute a super power lol
Ur definitely an f***ing legend, never change buddy!
Much appreciated
Great vid man. My son is 6 . He watched it with me and now he wants to make his bow! You've earned my sub
😁kids bows aren’t too hard to make. Have fun!
Clay made a good point about telling his son to also pay attention to the surroundings when tracking a blood trail. Look for tracks and possible routes. But not just that. Also look around for the animal itself, you don't want to stumble upon the wounded animal by following it's blood trail. Not only that but it teaches you to not rely on only the blood trail which can be unreliable at times. When me and my old man track deer or bear we shoot, I always have my nose in the leaves and he has his looking around. I have a VERY keen eye for blood, I can see the tiniest spec the size of a needle tip in wet leaves. My old man on the other hand is red colour blind.... ironic right. So I was walking along blood trails ever since I was 5. But he has a very keen eyesight so he usually finds the animal when walking 50 yards ahead of me by looking at the direction I'm headed.
What a great dad. Every kid would benefit having one.
He did a good job on the tracking and the commentary at the end. Good memories.
You are a great teacher Mr Clay. Your sons are fortunate. Well done on teaching the basics of tracking. Fin's going to be an expert tracker on his own in no time. Not to mention videographer and show host. Love it..
Thanks Todd
"Pretty stressful drag". So funny.
Fun to see how excited Fin gets ! Nice shot I so want to go hog hunting with my bow!!
Clay,
You and the boys should put in for the draw hunt on Ossabaw Island in south Ga. No human habitation on the entire sea island. You have to get ferried there with everything you might need for the duration of your stay. The hogs there are the closest thing to a poor man’s jamon iberico.
I really like your video's. Makes me proud to see the way you teach. Hunting and tracking skills are passed to the next generation. Fin is a natural born hunter. You must be proud. There is hope for the the future. Makes my heart soar like a hawk.
I remember when this was a primitive archery channel
Great video Clay! So nice to see how you coach/train your boys in the ways of the hunter! This is what every father SHOULD do. It’s about nature, about beasts and about life. Great stuff. Thank you for sharing! Nice hunting too!
Thanks Pat
Clay I recommend a book called My side of the mountain especially for your boys
What a beautiful location. It seems to be an undeveloped paradise.
Love seeing such different terrain and plant life. I have hunted the west coast all my life, and enjoy seeing you scout to the area. I retire soon and hope to get into one of your bow making classes.
I figured the master tracker is you pops.🤣🤣🤣. Good teaching dad he will be a master tracker following your instructions 👍🏼. Learned a few things myself. I’m not a hunter but don’t mean I don’t want to learn.
Way to Go Fen! Good Job Claye Hayes!
I love watching all
Of your videos
Especially when the boys are with you
Keep it up Clay
Merry Christmas your kids are very fortunate to have such a great dad keep up the great videos
Hell ya. Nice shot as always. Can’t wait to see the boys shoot something again. Fin is a total stud.
A land remembered!!!! I'm literally going to my storage unit tomorrow to dig that book out!!! It's funny you mention it!! Now I've really gotta read it🤟🇺🇸
It’s a great one
I'm so proud that you are passing down your skills and techniques to your youngling, I wish I had that done to me as I've missed on so much of natural abilities taught to me and being involved in nature.
Kudos to you and live gloriously, 😎🤘
Thanks Jack
Some people get to have all the fun
Way to go Fin, you did good work that day.
Just an Island bouy….. excellent vid!!
Cool master tracker still eating! Good parenting!
My boy loves going hunting with me. He's 7. He's a little gun shy after the last time we went. He got poison ivy all over his face! I'd love to take him to Florida for a hog hunt. Great job Clay. We love your videos.
Nice job Clay! Way to teach your boys the finer things in life. Raising the right! Im doing the same with my 2 girls.
he's not just teaching his son. He's teaching us all 😄
Parenting today is all around technology sadly , my dad taught us boys to do things for our selves , he said one day I won’t be here and your gunna have to know how to look after yourself , he ment when he dies I understood what he ment I was young and learnt killing chickens plucking them getting them , went on duck hunts , pig hunts , deer hunts , fishing , I hated it at first but really glad he taught us , we certainly know how to look after our selves with bows ,gun, and trapping rabbits etc . Skills you won’t find in the city’s , clays son will be fine , never to late to learn from one another if your willing to put in the work and know your going to get your hands bloodied and dirty, that’s how it goes . Survival.
Fen is going to be a youtuber in no time!!!
I think your boy is part Blood Hound. That was a fine tracking job. God’s blessings to you both.
Man that was really cool!
You are a great teacher Clay!
My grandfather old school air force rip, taught me to step back to last blood marking and dab around with a white cloth if you're blood trail suddenly stops
Best tracker this side of the Mississippi!! He had a awesome teacher tho!!
Master clay of the woods... he deserves to win... he a simple n great
Thanks much
A land remembered is a great read!
"Don't look at the bloodtrail as your lone navigation tactic, get in the animals head, if you were running for our life, panicking, where would you go?" ~Me to my future kids on out future hunting adventure MAN THESE VIDEOS BRING ME LIFE!
Glad you enjoyed it!

It’s a blast
Ditto beast's gratitude 🙏 comment below, one year in to building bows and happier than I've ever been when rasping
Great video. You’re right about A Land Remembered, it was required reading when I was in high school. I might have to read that one again

Looks like off the coast of Georgia.
An awesome video with your son. Thsnks for sharing.
Is this one of the management hunts in cumberland island?
Good job tracking! I know a few grown men who have hunted there whole life that can’t track half that good. Always try to learn something from each tracking job and you will always be getting better.
True
That young man did dang good.
I recognize this as North Florida, but am curious which island you’re on?
…or Georgia Coast? Cumberland Island?
I have a question.I'm just starting making a long bow and should were the arrow rest against the bow should in be dead center of the bow.enjoy your videos.thank you.
