Island Survival Challenge: Bamboo Bow Build, Hunt, Catch & Cook

- This may be the best primitive survival/bow building video I've ever done. While on a recent trip to a tropical island, I took on the challenge of building a primitive survival bow, arrow, and bow string from local materials and seeing if I could complete an island survival challenge catch and cook. The primitive bow string was made from variegated snake plant, the primitive bow, from a large piece of bamboo. For the arrow I used a smaller bamboo shoot and tipped it with a trade point. I built a fire with a bamboo fire saw to straighten the bamboo arrow shaft and complete the survival bow build. When my primitive bow hunting kit was complete I took it out to hunt feral goats in the steep cliffs of the island. After sitting through a few rain showers and high winds, I was finally able to get close enough for a shot at a small goat, perfect for primitive cooking. I used my large knife (the Marshal from Montana Knife Company) to build everything, including the bamboo cooker. I cooked the goat in a primitive bamboo pressure cooker with coconut water and mango. It was one of the best wild, primitive cooked meals I've ever enjoyed!

Finally a survival bow build with natural cord. Nice!
Thank ya
yeah but a modern metal knife isnt really always there ??
A bamboo pressure cooker? Ingenious!
Right?!
@@clayhayeshunterwhat’s skinny on that beautiful blade you’ve been using lately?
@@clayhayeshunter..any air fryers in the pipeline? 😅 seriously though its easy to see how you did so well on Alone, even without having fat reserves. Your skills are very impressive 👍
@clayhayeshunter thank you for such a beautiful video!
@@slimothypickens3539looks like a Montana Knife Company Marshall
Little did he know, he could've made the entire bow out of bamboo. String, Bow, arrow shaft, arrow tip (there used to be a video on how to make one and it's shot clean through a banana tree and then a coconut) as well as the fletching from the leaves.
Bamboo is so cool.
Also since you were able to get those snake plant fibers so (relatively) easy, I would suggest learning the rudiger/fire roll. Everyone always says "BuT tHeReS nO cHaRcOaL iN tHe BuSh" it doesn't need charcoal it works with a host of natural fibers and a plethora of fillers and itll save you loads of calories over methods like the fire saw. Happy crafting! 😁👍
I’ll check that out.
@@clayhayeshunterI can provide a link if you want.
I’m pretty sure the bow string fibers were from a snake plant not a spider plant.
The string is made from Sansevieria trifasciata, the Snake plant...
@@realeyesrealizereallies6828 your point being?. Fiber is fiber 🤷♂️.
Just when I thought the fiber bow string was cool, the bamboo pressure cooker blew my mind!
Bro this must be the best youtube content i’ve ever seen
5 star stuff without a doubt
Really enjoyed the video Clay! I spent eleven years in Hawaii as a youth and was able to see it before it became densely populated with so many restrictions to adventures like yours! Brought back so many memories of using large bamboo to create functional survival items. Thank you for sharing your experiences with an old man like me!
Thanks Jim
a bamboo pressure cooker now that dope
Clay's knowledge, resourcefulness, and skill will always amaze me. Well done!
The way the guy did the string , you know this is incredibly.
The way you made that cord was phenomenal
Incredible! What a freaking awesome video with such a plethora of skills. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the bow and arrow making, the hunt and the cook but gotta say that is one bad ass knife.
That whole process was simply amazing and a testament to you skills. Wow! Thanks Clay!
many thanks
I just love these bow making videos.
Bamboo pressure cooker is the coolest thing i have ever seen
Oh damn! All the natural stuff is mind boggling but that broadhead is flat out badass!! Great video Clay, one of your vest in my humble opinion.
Thanks
Best survivor channel out there. Mainly because we know you’re the real fuckin deal, winner of alone. Extremely difficult task to do, there are a lot of posers in the TH-cam survivalist world. Many who can’t cut it in real life. But Clay is one of the GOATs.
That pressure cooker design was awesome, never seen it before great idea.
Little village kid wondering where his goat went😂
Oof
Watching this master craftsman at work is a rare, humbling and almost mystical experience. Truly hypnotic. Thank you Clay.
Wow, thank you!
Really good transmission for the young and holdest génération ! thank's Clay

Gotta say, it's amazing watching that plant change from a green stalk, to scraped white fibers.
And you make it look easy.
Amazing.
Y'all only 6 more subs to 500K. Lets get him there!!!!
Done!
Love this video. What a freaking bad ass. Never seen a bamboo pressure cooker, great idea.
Thank ya
One of the best videos I've seen in a while. Well done
Thank ya
Been making arrows for over 65 years! I have to say that you are the man! Very nice Clay!
Wow, thanks!
I like that you aren't like this massive muscle beast and still have the ability to do a lot of labor. Even smaller guys can survive if you have the will. I also really enjoyed the silence and the text rather than talking my ear off. Wonderful content.
Awesome video Clay, I’m loving these latest releases
He really just build a pressure cooker out of bamboo. Amazing
I was like "a bamboo pressure cooker? there's no way".
Homie had that coconut chivas lookin real tasty. 👍🏼
Amazing that he did all that in just 26 minutes. I feel like I’d still be making the bow 🤷🏼♂️
😜
I'm curious how long it actually took from starting the bow to killing the goat?
Hey mate, you did so many good videos, but this one was sure one of the best ones!
This is exactly what everyone wants to see from you, I guess... One knife for all... From nothing to a crazy functional bow, to fure, to hunt, to cook, and finally to eat. What a quality of content. Bravo Master Clay! Big propps from Switzerland!
Many thanks
I luv them catch n cook vids
One of my favorite videos you’ve made thus far!
Amazing video Clay. You and the Marshall never disappoint.
Iv seen an old cowboy use big horn sheep horns, homemade rawhide glue, strips of sinew, and rattle snake skin (as decoration) to make bows. Absolutely amazing bows!!!!
Always learn something from watching Clay. Another great video, thanks Clay!!
You bet!
Excelente Clay saludos!!
Looked mighty tasty….nice job.
This man is a perfect example why Nature is the only One and True God in this Universe
Beautiful! Well done! These are my favorite types of videos. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a poetic ode to human ingenuity!
Yur the master of survival! Nice work 👍
Clay, just a masterful and primitive display of skill.I enjoy watching how you use your tools. The sound of a sharp blade slicing through coconut husk and scraping bamboo is equiste.
Always great Clay. Thanks for sharing.
So Clay, are the wife & kids back at the 5 star resort, ordering room service and sipping umbrella drinks by the pool? All I ask is when the SHTF, you promise to tell me where you are going! I'll bring salt & pepper. Amazing video.
Most excellent!
im amazing how the natural cord looks. looks like something you can buy a home depot
Always nicely done by Clay Hayes.
I love how a pressure cooker made from bamboo is a side dish in this fascinating meal of a video.
This is pretty cool.
Shout out to our ancestors who hunted megafauna with an atlatl. They were something , werent they?
Absolutely
That's how you kill a mammoth relatively safely, from a distance!
That is epic Clay!! Really impressive video!!
Great video. Had my mouth watering. Good editing too. Short and to the point. Some of these type videos just go way too long.
Glad you enjoyed it!
😮 wow. Amazing man
Another great video. Thanks for your informative content.
Cliff.
England, UK. 👍
This is a great video! Thank you for making it
Glad you liked it!
This is amazing, you did a great job, thank you for sharing
Thank you so much!
I didn't expect you to string the bow up in that direction, I know Howard Hill made some amazing bows with bamboo! I really liked this video and Idaho will always be home for me but that island living definitely has some appeal 👌
Mate, simply excellent content. Another level from most in YT. And btw when you sliced that coconut. Your knife edge… that’s some proper sharpening right there. Thank you for sharing
Nothing like a cook up in the middle of a comp😊
....knowledgeable, resourceful, skillful... congratulations... from Colombia.... 👍👍👍 ...
That was very, very cool!
Thanks for sharing great video

The creativity in your use of bamboo and the skill with which you wield your blade is astounding. Excellent vid! That stewed goat with fruit sure looked delicious! Thanks for teaching me new things to use in primitive craft.
Awesome, thank you!
wish you talked a bit more in your videos, like when making the bow or other things. would make it more interesting to watch for an extended time.
What headcam are you using to film the hunt?
Amazing video by the way. This is the kind of content the internet needs.
Thanks!
GoPro 10 and 12
Came from Xander B. Great bow building
Bamboo has been used to do everything since ancient time in south east Asia
Absolutely genius the way you cooked!!!

Great job filming it! Especially with all the shallow depth of field and focus
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is by far the most awesome TH-cam video I’ve ever watched!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Another cool video. I really do like the knife a lot.
O cara é bom no que faz. Parabéns. O arco ficou muito bom. E só usou coisas da natureza.
Awesome!
thats REALLY cool!
Any unfamiliar little critters you had to deal with? Always astonished by the natural beauty of these kinds of places, but when I think about all the little crawlers that want to bite you I stop thinking about booking a trip.
😂😂😂
It’s really not bad in the winter months.
Love the knife.
best vids right there. No words and theoretic bla-bla-bla,just skills, knowledge and deeds as it is
That makes it for a different Hawaiian experience. Thanks for sharing - amazing skills!
