  • Welcome to the build series!!! This is how we're building an off grid island resort!! Join us as we commence this off grid project to rebuild 2 more cabins here on our remote island home. Our off grid island lifestyle means we have to consider recycling and repurposing anything we can, donating materials to the local community where possible. This is self sufficient living on an island and building in these conditions comes with some massive challenges.. and demolition is just the beginning!

    I can’t believe I missed an episode! Good luck with home schooling. In America, I’ve seen home schooling be either excellent or terrible. In the cases where it was excellent the parents were both university professors. In the cases where it was questionable the parents weren’t very well educated themselves, and seemed blissfully ignorant of their deficit in this regard. None the less, I can imagine Uepi would offer some excellent unique opportunities for experiential learning, especially in biology. At night, with a telescope, you could probably do some great things with the stars and planets as well. Five house video. 🏠🏠🏠🏠🏠

      yeah I am really glad we have a robust distance program that we are working with as it is all kind of worked out for you.. it's just the delivery and commitment to your children via patience and care that is a lot of work on top of everything else. Both Jase and I enjoy teaching but this is a new challenge especially with the emotions of a bright 5 year old!!! I am looking forward to seeing how it all progresses and going with changes as we need them! Arlo is just now on his first holiday and he is so proud of himself and although not in school at the moment, still practicing many things he has learnt which is a sign he has found it enjoyable :)

    Such a lovely video. Wonderful to see Jill and Grant again and looking so great! We are hoping to get there in a couple of years. I also think that your children are gaining an enormous gift. Public education is nothing compared to what you are giving to your little ones. Beautiful that you will have someone helping this year. We so love your videos, thank you and all best wishes to all of you!

    Good morning and welcome back you hard working people. I love a project, I probably needed a digger, so jealous Jase! I think your kids are going to continue to thrive in your holistic learning environment. They are set up to soak in deep learning because they converse with their community. I think learning needs to be experiential and real world based rather focused on worksheets or workbook programmes.

    • @TheIslandLifeofUs
      @TheIslandLifeofUs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brett!!! We're back finally after a slightly longer hiatus than planned haha but there has been so much going on here with this build... some great videos coming up with the progress. The digger has been such a massive help... really don't know how we would have coped without it thus far. As for the kids and education, it is a tricky balance indeed... the program we are using is still quite formal so at times has felt pretty overwhelming for us... especially since Arlo is only 5 years old but that's what is expected for Aus schooling too so at least we can be confident his education will be transferable if / when we are living there again. But the best part is having the flexibility... he is thriving so far though missing his daily 5 hour long crab games!

    Great video and animation. I might post a link to it on FB for my UK friends so they can see where I'm going in May. When you have time (🤣) I'd be interested to hear how Arlo's primary education compares to Jason's and his brother's. Still can't believe Arlo was a baby last time I was there.

    • @TheIslandLifeofUs
      @TheIslandLifeofUs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Sally!! Appreciate you sharing our channel with anyone who might enjoy it :) Really looking forward to seeing you in May!! Arlo's education is going very well so far. The program is sophisticated these days in terms of the online delivery and resources able to be shared. Arlo actually attends 2 online classes per day and can see the teacher and other students with it being quite interactive. We send back his work which gets marked weekly and feedback delivered to Arlo which is great. He loves it... compared to what Jase did in the 2000's for high school which was via the same school but all with physical materials sent in a post box and he self-directed all of his learning. We do get a curriculum box sent too but it's supportive resources rather than everything required. And now we have easy online support from the teacher and Alton, our in house tutor who helps with delivery and activities. I think it is incredible what can be offered for geographically isolated students nowadays!! My gosh I can't believe it's been so long since you were here... the kids are so grown and independent already :)

    How exciting on all fronts! Sounds like Arlo will be getting an amazing education, seeing and experiencing things my kids are only seeing in a museum/aquarium (looking at mantas from a platform like we did yesterday is a poor substitute for snorkeling with them!!!). Hope we can bring the kids to experience some of that magic and see the new cabins someday in the not too distant future.

      it is absolutely a new era for Uepi and so exciting seeing it all come together! It feels like such a massive transition to the Uepi of our generation and for the kids!! It will be incredible to have you all back here sometime soon... the kids get so much from living the simple island life.. We feel lucky every day with what we have to offer our kids in the natural environment and I often think about how one day they'll realise just how special it truly is. Super cool that Maya and Kai got to see Mantas but we will for sure have them underwater with them next time you visit :-)

    Loved staying in that cabin! So sad to see it go, but I bet you are excited for the new builds. 🏠🏝️
    With regards to Arlo’s education, as a Kinder teacher, I can see you are doing a great job educating him in his beautiful surroundings. He has an excellent vocabulary and general knowledge and is getting to see and learn so much about life right there. Just wondering about his social interactions with kids his own age, establishing friendships etc. But I’m sure you will be making those decisions for what is best for your lovely family. Carry on living your best life! 🥰

    • @TheIslandLifeofUs
      @TheIslandLifeofUs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Such nostalgia for us too!!! SO happy to see them go as we know how incredible the new buildings are going to be... much easier on maintenance and so well designed for comfort and showcasing the surroundings.. Jase has done an awesome job on the designs!! But there is a lot of history in the original buildings and memories for so many people who have visited over the years!
      As for education... it's a constant re-evaluation of the circumstances I find.. the program is really great and very involved.. it's essentially Aus level school just delivered online / in home by a supervisor. Given there is no village here on the island and no other children it can be difficult for them with friendships etc. and the current status quo is still covid tests for anyone arriving on the island .. so it is still difficult to do village prep visits or have other kids come here until those rules relax. But I do think when things calm down on the covid front for us we will prioritise having other kids come up for play groups and Filly will start village kindy in 2024. They have some distance friends they see once a month on a facetime call but yes otherwise, the two of them are lucky to have each other haha

So funny and so accurate. 😆 I’ve always loved that feeling, having spent some wonderful years living in the tropics. I also love the outro shot of the lagoon at sunset. Arlo's gonna have a great education. The British education system seems so poor nowadays at preparing young people for real life and work, in comparison, especially as it's so bogged down by subtle Marxist agendas and 'gender' confusion at present.

    How dose your house survive in the storm season if you are living on a tropical island you must have half the year as the dry season and the other half of the year as the wet and stormy season. I only ask as we have been living in a storm proof house by the Beach on a tropical island in the Philippines? But we did our best to build a storm proof house. But already after just under a year of living in this house our front gate is rotten and needs replacing and our storm proof shutters need replacing and there are a few crack and damp patches inside the house. All due to the tropical weather.
