  • This is our incredible off grid island resort built with sustainable timber. We meet the people and visit the place where we acquire sustainable timber for our off grid build here on the island. Using only sustainable timber is extremely important to us for many reasons we expose in this episode. Other elements of the off grid island project progress in this phase and we're really excited to share the progress so far.
    Through our off grid cabin build we hope to show you how important it is to protect the world's forests. The contrast between logging vs sustainable harvest is profound especially when we look at the bottom line for the local people. We hope by watching this video you will see how timber can be sustainable and you can also make a difference through the decisions you make when you purchase timber products at home.

      Also, does the timber need to be seasoned for very long?

      Ideally yes. Haha but we have no time. Vasa is very hard so luckily for us it’s quite ok to be using “green” as external cladding and decking it’ll season in place 👍🏼😂

    I love your channel because you seem unafraid to go from from spectacular dive videos, to running your resort, to discussing sustainable development in such a way that the interconnections between the natural world and economics seem effortless. It really is quite a special talent you have for it. Thank you for one of your most thoughtful videos yet. Five tree video. 🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴

      Best approach for us is to make videos around what's going on in our life at the time haha so I am glad there are people such as yourself enjoying the content we make - even if it is a bit left field haha and constantly changing!! We miss being underwater though and hope to be sharing more of that again soon!! There's still a few build videos to come and we really try to add value through these stories too.. thanks so much for the encouraging comment - it really pushes us to keep going!

      @@TheIslandLifeofUs I’m glad to encourage you! I live in Washington DC. For me, remote tropical islands and coral reefs are pure escapism. The natural world seems a long way away inside The Beltway. I think your videos are interesting because of the way the natural world impacts you much more directly and immediately. That makes it easier to make the connection between nature and economics.

    Thank you for highlighting the sustainable timber options that people can do to sustainably harvest natural forests in Solomon Islands. Industrial logging has absolutely destroyed forests and society in Solo.

    • @TheIslandLifeofUs
      @TheIslandLifeofUs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it's important to us to share this side of things too... there are some good / better options and certainly for the long term benefit of communities in Marovo and everywhere in Sols... Makes us so sad seeing the devastation of commercial logging all around us and we would never be a part of that

      Glad you enjoyed it! It really is a massive process... even the work that goes into it once the timber gets to us to be processed and used but observing the harvest is really something special. Another level of dedication to the whole cause!! Working on getting the next video up asap... it's been a mental period!

    Absolutely astonishing to me you can have a functioning small scale saw mill in the middle of the jungle. Unbelievable ingenuity - all due to necessity. Just amazing - what highly skilled and creative people to work with - so many urban dwellers wouldn’t have a clue Wow! Thanks for that video. Best wishes for good weather and a finish to the build. 👍🏻🤞🏻😍

      It really is quite amazing isn't it!! I really enjoyed my morning spent with Nicholson and the guys watching how carefully they worked. I never quite understood how the reduced impact actually comes from extracting the sawn board by hand vs dragging massive logs through the forest which destroys so much additional habitat. The care taken by these locals in how they work in the area is incredible. I felt how insanely special it was to be in a virgin forest seeing this kind of sustainable practice take place. Glad you enjoyed it!! Thanks for the well wishes.. some major speed bumps ahead -- eek

    That timber milling is amazing! It was so sad seeing those huge ships full of timber from the horrible commercial logging. The sustainable timber cutting is so much better. What a pity there is so much corruption in the Solomons that allows the huge logging companies from overseas to pillage such beautiful rainforest.😢

    • @TheIslandLifeofUs
      @TheIslandLifeofUs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you bet... one of the most horrible sights especially knowing the damages caused in so so soooo many different ways. At least we hope that the more sustainable options and carbon trading might become a real option for more areas in the Solomons nowadays

    Am I mistaken or is that hardwood being milled? If it is, I hope it goes to good use cuz that stuff takes aeons to grow back, sustainable or not.
    Nice backyard btw.

    • @TheIslandLifeofUs
      @TheIslandLifeofUs  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes it is definitely a hard wood.. this is also the point we make regarding the applications of selective harvest for longevity of the timber for outdoor uses and value to the resource owner. We absolutely recognise how long it takes for a tree such as this to regrow which is what our supplier also talks about - to avoid taking trees too soon they carefully select to ensure maximum yield and minimal impact. It's a balancing act for sure and seeing how the resource can be managed in the most sustainable way to benefit the local owners economically is really the only way forward in a country like this. Very controversial issue we know... and we live the reality of it here in terms of viable resource options locally vs importing... very tricky!! We love our backyard so much and glad to hear you notice how special it is!!

    • @H.A..
      @H.A.. ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheIslandLifeofUs Yes, it is absolutely imperative to be aware of long term impacts of harvesting hardwood forests, which it sounds like you and the locals are well aware of. It's upsetting looking at the destruction of some of the Latin American forests with no regard for future generations. I'm glad to hear what you had to say on the topic, which is very controversial as you mentioned. I'm sure you guys will put that stuff to the best use possible knowing it's value.
      All the best to you building your family home and making pleasant memories in the process. A home built with love shall last through the ages. 🌴🌴

  • @MsStaddon
    @MsStaddon ปีที่แล้ว

    That was so interesting. I hope I don't need to help the build but I'm up for it!! More seriously, is there a way for visitors like me to offset our flights by paying into the carbon offsets scheme that you mentioned? I don't trust the airline offset schemes so I was wondering how to feel less guilty about flying!

    • @TheIslandLifeofUs
      @TheIslandLifeofUs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Flying is a big deal for carbon impact isn't it and always something we feel bad about too... the carbon offset programs Jase spoke about are long term commercial schemes that enable businesses to make offsets. I actually don't know if there's a way to contribute to this type of scheme on a once-off or small scale basis but it would be good to find out. We will ask our contact in country and let you know.. I am very hopeful you won't be impacted by our building jobs haha but love the enthusiasm!!! It has been a rollercoaster and the upcoming videos you'll see some chaos!
