  • Out at Pueblo elevation 4900' prop solas 11" 3 blade
    Motor responds so much better, I can actually operate it between the 5k-6k operational rpm now plugs are nice and brownish white not fouling anymore. The 8" prop is even more responsive, throw boat on plane in 50' and is better for trolling.
    10" prob the lowest rpm could not get me below 1.8mph the 8" gets me 1.5mph-2.5mph.

    I have the same motor. 2017 model. On a CMC PT-35. It sees 31mph, every once in a while it'll just "touch" 32. 12" Turbo hotshot prop at 6100 engine RPM on a heavy war eagle 548. I like the motor and it runs exactly the same as the 3 cyl 25hp I had on it, just doesn't accelerate quite as fast. But real close. I'm impressed with it. It DOES slow down slightly after a long run, then letting it sit and heat soak. I say "slighly" but it's typically 29.5 to 30 mph at 5950-6000 rpm; if I pull the cowl off and re-try, it doesn't change much. Certainly not enough to justify potentially pulling some water spray into the air intake. Oh, valve adjustment at 100hr made a difference too. Something I saw a litlte bit of on these motors-the VST has a float and float valve inside of it, similar to a caruburetor. If you let the motor sit for a length of time, the float and/or valve can stick, which causes the fuel level in the VST to rise, which then causes fuel to be forced through the overflow tube and into the intake--causing a rich condition. At that point, it's best to put a VST kit in it. Pump filter, float valve, gasket etc. Also when this happens, removing the cowling and changing the air intake characteristics might make it run better as it's compensating for the additional unmetered fuel.

      I gave up on this and sold it. Bought the carb version it is 20lbs heavier. I liked the carb version much better,.smoother and quieter.
      I had one of the very first motors, Yamaha did not do any high elevation testing with it. I was gunnie pig.
      The new 2023 tohatsu 3cyl would be a better motor, 3cyl and few lbs more than the yammie. It's a ground up redesign

    I was sold on this motor until I started seeing and hearing issues with it. That really sucks because I was excited about it

      I do regret buying it sometimes, but now that it runs i'm ok with it.
      I actually saw a merc 25hp at bass pro for the same price, was last years model. It did not have the variable throttle which is something I wanted. How ever it was a 3 cyl model, which would be much smoother, but it was also 170lbs. Made in japan by tohatus did not mind, the 25/30 share the same block. I'll upgrade in few years but for now this 25hp sips fuel i can live with vibration.

      @@omieyouknowme I am sorry to hear that you sometimes regret the purchase. There is nothing wrong with the motor. A 25hp 4-stroke is going to struggle at altitude. The 3cyl, larger-displacement Merc/Tohatsu 25hp motors would not struggle as much, but I can understand if you did not want the extra weight. It's unfortunate that public perception is that 4-strokes are flawless and that there is no downside to them. This probably caused your expectations to be very high with your new motor. I can understand that. But with ANY 25hp 4-stroke, the holeshot performance won't come close to your 2-stroke Mercury. The 25hp Evinrude Etec would blow your mind, but I understand if that's not your thing. I hope you grow to like your motor more. Some last things to keep in mind: (1) Since you are operating at 4900 ft sometimes and 8500 ft at other times, you may need different pitch props for each situation. (2) Solas props are adequate at best. They are certainly more affordable but they will not perform as well as the Mercury/Quicksilver props in the right pitch. I'm not saying you must ditch the Solas; just be aware of this. (3) Have you experimented with engine mounting height (not just trim setting)? This may not make a difference in holeshot but it could get you some extra rpm's at WOT. (4) Your motor needs to be propped to run 6000 rpm at WOT, despite the 5000-6000 rpm range stated in the owners manual. Your prior Merc 2-stroke was likely spec'd to max out at 5500. Good luck !!

      @@WhalerGA the motor does not do that bad anymore. I have modified the intake to let it breath easier at elevation. It was sucking in hot air from inside the cowl previously

      @@WhalerGA I have found that OEM Yamaha or Quicksilver props do perform better. I keep 3 props for each motor I have for each elevation I run at. I miss the two stroke but will never go back, I can run all day with the 25hp or 40hp on 3 gal of fuel, that is half of what the 2 stroke had.

  • @Eric-yi4mz

    How did you know it wasn’t sucking enough air. Running at WOT with all that extra air mite not be good for it.

      Running it previously without the extra air it ran rich, the plugs where fouling. The dealer replaced plugs, I replaced them ngks are not cheap. Watch previous videos shows how taking cover off affects motor.

    I get 26mph with the same motor my boat weights 750lb with out any gear now the motor dose run faster with the stock aluminum prop I have a stainless steel one now. I had a Yamaha 25hp two stroke on the same boat and got 29mph to 31mph with it with the alum prop

      4 strokes need spin up to keep up with a two stroke. I sold this motor, but once it's spinning above 5600 it did really well. Below that it's gutless. But the amount of fuel it used was incredibly low.

      How much does your hull weigh without people? Bottom hull Width? Is it deep v, semi v or flat bottom? Are you at elevation? Lots of variables.
      The 25hp did really well with my new hull, actually went faster with heavier boat and two people.
      Tach is a cheap knock off from fleabay, I like to get the ones with a ground lug for cleaner signal. I also wrap the wires around both coil wires for this motor as both plugs fire at the same time.

      do you have à rectifier on the outboard to charge the battery for the fish finder ?

      @omieyouknowme  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yl3064 you will have no problem with the stock prop in that boat. Might have to go up to 13" pitch, that boat is 1/3 the weight of mine.
      I have electric start, it has rectifier and voltage controller so it does not over charge. I recommend mounting engine with a rubber isolation pad to keep vibration down.

      Omieyouknowme I had a Mercury once in my life , it was a 15hp 2000. brand new , with extended warranty .nothing but troubles. i had this outboard 3 months, while is spent half the time to various dealership. i even had to pay 350$ for a water pump leaking not covered by warranty. I used a total of two hours this engine . Just the name or even the color is getting me heart burn.

    Quite the vibration, can that be fixed?

    • @omieyouknowme
      @omieyouknowme  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vibes had gone down, I also had a jackplate on which aplified the vibration. Mounted in transom without jackplate is smoother, it absorbs vibes. Vibes will never go away it's. Two cyl wasted spark so both plugs fire.
      Get the Tohatsu/Merc if u don't want vibration, but it weighs almost 50lbs more.

    • @WhalerGA
      @WhalerGA 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it cannot be fixed. The 2 cylinder 4-stroke outboards fire both cylinders simultaneously and have a counterweight in the crankshaft to balance things out (in theory). This design is going to run rougher than a 3 cylinder motor, especially at idle. As the OP said, the Merc/Tohatsu 25hp models are 3 cyl, run smoother, and provide more low-end torque due to higher displacement and 3 cylinders. Yes, it is heavier than the Yamaha 25, but don't get caught up in the myth that the extra weight will offset the extra power and torque . . . not even close. But if your boat needs a lighter motor to maintain the right attitude at idle or at speed, or if you just want a motor that is easier to carry, then by all means, get the lighter motor, and have no regrets.

      WhalerGA Do they actually fire at the same time? I thought while on cylinder was on the power stroke the other was on intake.

    • @omieyouknowme
      @omieyouknowme  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elmoquick6958 they fire at the same time. I also have the wiring diagram for this motor, both injectors are on common line, they inject at same time to.
      The new 25h has the counter weight part of the crank so it buzzes more. The previous 25h had a dead weight slug for this, but same thing both fire at same time.
      Still not to bad of a motor, because it sips fuel, compared to 2 stroke or 4stroke carb.
      The efi system has Mitsubishi all over it.

      @@WhalerGA it doesn't fire both cyls at the same time. It fires one, then 360 deg of crank rotation the other. It's an even firing parallel twin; the downside is that both pistons run the exact same direction at the exact same time-hence the vibration. Polaris used this design on their old Ranger and Rzr 800, same vibrations.
