That and the music - I could and indeed did happily listen to the Sonic themes for protracted periods on pause. It was really hard for me to believe that the GG was actually an 8-bit machine after playing it for some years with this and some of the other games (which were occasionally better than their SMS originals, if they were properly redone for the smaller/more colourful display rather than just ported across with altered screen coordinates). Easily up to the level of most titles on 16-bit home computers, even if not the 16-bit consoles. Shame the SMS was so bad at handling multiple sprites on screen with any speed, even though it had the addressing capability for at least as many as the NES, and a better colour palette to boot. Things tended to get rather less fluid more quickly, and for some reason (either something to do with the hardware, or reluctance on the part of Sega programmers to kludge it) the graphics didn't resort to flicker to keep the overall speed up. It could handle more stuff on screen at once than the Nintendo too, but started to drag when you tried it. Hence games like Streets of Rage felt pretty sparse vs the Genesis version because the number of baddies on-screen had to be capped... (the GG one wasn't quite so bad, I guess less pixels = more speed?)
Master system was far more powerful than NES in almost every aspect. Sure the NES still can produce great 8-bit graphics but that's because used chips inserted on the cartridge of its games. Stock NES graphics look like an upgraded Atari 7800 at best while the Master System is very comparable to a low end PC ENGINE/Turbografx-16 game.
Whitenoise the success of sonic on Genesis led sega to make 8 bit games for sega master system and game gear. They had to build new games because the speed of sonic was beyond what the master system could handle. Even in this game you can outspeeed the system But honestly they made the right choice making new games regardless. For once sega made a good decision lol. Did this game come out in 1991, the same year as the Original version on Mega drive?... Which leads me to my second question, is this the original version because it looks more basic? Perhaps a cheap low budget copy bootleg for Nintendo that was commercial released? I mean why would Nintendo release a Sega game? Yup, my third question, that's it!
This was basically the scaled down version of the Mega Drive/Genesis game that Sega released for their 8-bit consoles, the Master System and the Game Gear.
I always thought this to be the best Sonic game. The master system had the best one the rest were just very stressful to play. Completed them but Master system was fun in comparison.
Treasuretrails RS wtf... I was 3-4 too, and this was my first game ever too. Damn. I turned 26 this year. Damn, where is the time... Woke up earlier then my mother to sneak up to the living room and playing this pre-installed version of sonic on my sega master system 2!
winicz Our SMS II had this Sonic built in. I always thought every SMS II was the same. Then again I never knew there was a Sonic and Tails for SMS II until I decided to search for a vid of this and saw it below this lol
Nostalgia infinita... 😥

After all, my favourite kinds of people are the ones who use gay/lesbian as an insult. C: The Master System is inferior for a REASON. It was released before the Genesis (i checked) I honestly think the Bridge Zone sounds fine.
Mark Kram the Texas Instruments PSG chip in the Master System can only do square waves and noise. The custom sound chip in the NES adds triangle waves and DPCM sample playback
Mark Kram yeah but... Look up Sonic 1 FM hack for the Yamaha YM2413 chip fitted to Japanese Master Systems, modified European / American Master Systems and the DB Electronics FM Power Base Converter for the Genesis / Mega Drive (Master Everdrive required to run) - listen to that!

I didnt know either! I thought they quit making master system games, before sonic came out! After I saw this...i looked into it... Apparently they also made, street fighter 2,the Michael jackson game and mortal combat. All for master system to! And in South America, they were still producing master system games,by the time ps1 came out here! 😮😮😮

@GUSTAVO666BR Error1010010101010 only a simpleton wouldn't understand what she's meaning by "my first game"... such simpletons... or must be 10 year old just being nasty
Thanks for uploading this, as a child, I could never get past the first stage of LABYRINTH ZONE when I got to it, I always ended up drowning poor sonic while frantically trying to find some air bubbles or get out of the water... Easily one of the best games made for the MS, very impressive considering the hardware it was running on!
I clearly remember and I can hum BGMs on the first and the second stage and that final stage music even now. It was my cousin sister playing this game like 20 years ago while me and other childs are watching. I felt like she is a genius clearing this game as a child. Yep. Especially the final factory maze stage. Even now I can't understand how she memorize all the route. Imagine watching whole times of Sonic advancing the stage full of maze and dangers. It was like forever till its end, but she finally made it. It may feel like cheap buzz and beep sound to some people, but that day the ending song was so cool and it felt like a fantasy to children watching her full play through sitting with her side. There was a tape recording(Yeah, it was the time then) containing literally her playthrough including the ending song. Of course it was only sound matters with raw sound quality but well, I don't know why we did it. Anyway the ending song was so cool and we played several times listening cool music from tape recording we made by our own hand. Maybe what I watched was a kind of 'TH-cam playthrough' these days, too early from time. She was a teenager and later she wanted to be a programmer, graduated with computer related degree but I heard she didn't make it and got another job to make her own. Maybe it would be a lot different when she did was these days. But who knows. I now know this Sega Master System version of Sonic is 'downgraded' version of original Sonic for Megadrive which was very expensive, but we were really happy with it then. Sorry for long comments with personal reminisce.
I have to thank you guys. when I was a small kiddo, I used to play this game. from all the levels the jungle one was stuck to my head from back then till today. even the soundtrack. haven't heard that Music in more than 18 years. you've got no idea how happy I am right now.
Well I gotta be honest, the Game Gear version was enjoyable, especially for being portable, but I prefer this one for its bigger screen size and Sonic's more defined character sprite.
@@absolutely0bsolete330 Sorry for being a year late on my reply, but as cool as that sounds, my Game Gear is shot. I haven't played it in years. Luckily I still have this port on the Virtual Console.
@@PUTRiDLegacy Bridge Act 3. You need to go backwards at the start of the level. Remember i got that life through a discussion with my cus, each one had the pad for himself, so we managed to get the life that way.
@@PUTRiDLegacy My pleasure. Master System and some of its games, like this one, had huge impact in my life. A time where everything seemed easier and cooler. Good to see there's many like me :)
I remember playing this with my dad, uncle, aunty, mom, grandmother, and grandfather, and my cousins and my siblings and my dog and my pet fish and my favorite snack back in the day. Sad to say their all dead. Reminds me of happy times.
Ohhhhh this beautiful, amazing, incredible game....this is what I grew up on...the awesome levels and phenomenal soundtrack..and that last fight had me stumped forever. Painfully nostalgic!
Too right, took an awful lot of effort to get that life. Dunno about you, but I always wanted more than just some little extra life after dicing with death there!
...how? It takes about 15 seconds just to get to the boss area, and a couple of seconds for each hit, with Robotnik only being in the hit zone for 5 seconds or so each time he pops up, needing maybe 7 or 8 hits to kill. So how exactly do you complete it in 15 seconds?
Full games and fully functional. Not half done and later released patches (maybe not even patches for half game if people won't complain, which means easy money for the company) We all can see right through you DLC and half asses games! You just want easy money for not finished product!
I love people who say that the world was better without the Internet.. on the Internet. Plus, Modern Internet was starting to take shape in 1983. You are ironic.
Coming back to this comment, I also dont get whats so bad about Updates, its always good to have bugs patched and get more features, and DLC isnt bad so long as it's not plastered on a game.
I highly recommend the Master System Sonic games over most of the Game Gear Sonic games because the Master System versions do not have bad frame rate issues, no slow-downs and no screen-crops/screen-crunches.
when I was a kid I bought a game gear cartridge that actually had master system version in it (hacked?), the game run smoothly most of the time only few places such as jungle waterfall will slow down a bit.
Wow this game takes me back a good 20 - 25 years ago... those were the days! My very first Sega master system with built in sonic then I also got Alex d’ Kidd. Good memories definitely feeling nostalgia Ryt now
So you had two Sega Master Systems? Because I had the SMS too that had Alex The Kid built in, you were very lucky to have Sonic built into yours, wish I had that instead of Alex although Alex was alot of fun to play too
A lot of people nowadays either forget or don't know that the first Sonic the Hedgehog games were released on the Sega Master System, which pre-dates the Sega Mega Drive.
Absolutely loved this game as a kid, I had a Master System II and it blew my mind that there was a game already preinstalled in the console without needing to use a cartridge, I must've been about 3 or 4 years old when I had that console. Still have it and still works to this day :D
First game I played when I got Master System for my birthday. Really good times. This game is perfect in all senses, it explores the console’s full potential. Really well developed.
+Robin Howard Because the Megadrive/Genesis version is technically superior, but playability is subjective and down to each individual's preferences. I found this version more playable because it was a bit slower and less chaotic. In the Genesis version some levels were too convoluted.
This is where it all began for me. I played the Master System Sonics then the Mega Drive/Genesis ones afterwards, ahh it only seems like yesterday listening to this :)
1 Alex Kidd in Miracle World 2 Sonic 2 3 Sonic The games of my childhood... I actually think the Sonic games for Sega Master System, are better than the ones on Sega Genesis/Mega Drive!
Agreed they were more challenging I thought, especially this and Sonic 2 with that awful hang glider, even Alex the kid built in was challenging I never finished it
I scan still remember the first time i got to the sky base ACT-02 and, since it was late, i had to shut down the system (was lunch time), at one condition, agreed with my mom: get to zero lives. (i never liked shutting off with remaining lives...don't ask me why :D ). I jumped off from the left and i discovered the "shortcut" to the end of the level. The following day I had to get there again and finally i finished the game. Damn, I was so happy...!! With this video, you brought me there. Thank, mate. PS: I still got a Sega Master System II + Light Phazer bot still working, connected to a 14" CRT monitor! Both work like a charm, after 30 years!
Unfortunately, modern children will not understand this, but for me, as a lover of pixel games, this game is a treasure. The full value of such games can only be felt by picking up the cartridge with this game.
I used to play this game as a 5 yr old, and i've been a sonic fan ever since. I'm 18 now, and this still the only game that makes me feel smth (I just love to remember the feeling of the cold morning at my grandmother's house while I struggled at bridge zone. There was also the birds singing outside, and the amazing breakfast smell... it just used to hit different, yknow ❤)
I think this could be my favourite video game of all time. The reason why is it isn't so hard on the eyes, it looks good, its fast and simple and is difficult enough but not too difficult to be stressful. Brings good memories. I preferred this over the mega drive version.
SEGA's consoles have always been superiors than Nintendo. Just compare the facts between NES and Mastersystem, then SNES vs Megadrive. Nintendo's Secrets is to compensate with flashy colors while SEGA's were detailed and more precised.
@@AuriosCPU Snes was technicly superior lol. The Mega Drive only had a faster processor, but apart of that the Snes was far superior. Also the NES had way better games. I know what you were trying to say and I still like the Mega Drive and Sega itself, but I still had to correct you
@@eliotisconfusedaboutyourpa8105 lol sorry you are completely wrong. I'm talking about technical features and they were late on Nintendo. It's easy to check. Games on Nintendo are all colours flashy while for the same game it's graphical superior on Megadrive and even Background music. You can check Bomberman for ex. On Snes it's not very beautiful comparated to Megadrive. Castlevania too and many others. That's why all games from Nintendo are bright colour to hide lack of performances while it's far more detailed on Megadrive to all games.
@@AuriosCPU there are many games that look better on SNES than on the Mega Drive/Genesis. Also when comparing the specs you can see that apart the processor the Snes clearly is more powerful. No doubt that some games look better on Genesis/Mega Drive, but its not that all of them do.

Show me games which are not colours flashy and really detailed as Megadrive do or even better, i'm growing impatient to see that. Also, on the paper, all Sega machines are superiors.
Wow! Every time I see an industry I think about Network Terminal, while my mom does about Reach For The Stars, since it's the only Sonic song she remembers.

The best Sonic the Hedgehogs were on the Master System. Also, how responsive was that game for an 8-bit always shocks me, even to this day. The system that played it a Master System 2, not bad for a 1990 model, I have to say.
I like it. I didn't actually know about this version, and I was one of the few people who had a master system at the time. If me and my brother knew about this, we would have bought it in a heartbeat.
First game I ever played. I was 6 and this was built into my Master System. Remember being in awe of my Mum when she completed it one day. All the neighbourhood kids were crowded around her and the tiny tv screen willing her on. She was an hour late picking my Dad up from work that day as she lost track of the time 😂😂 This version of Sonic will always have a special place in my heart. The game that started my love of gaming, which has never left me ❤
I was giving a Master System when I was 5 years old. The time I spent on this Sonic game! Brings such strong nostalgia. Today’s younger generation would simply have no idea !! This was massive in the 90’s
Those who have played from Pal Master System 2 may know, this is not the actual playing speed. Actually, the playback speed should be around 83%, due to the difference between Pal / Ntsc. But I can't find gameplay video with real speed on youtube. These are the best music in the history of the game.
When I was 8 I got a master system and played sonic forever.I played so much once I decided to try and complete the entire game on one life....I still feel this was one of my greatest achievements :)
This is my first and still my favourite Sonic game. I love how it captures the whole platformer gameplay without a ridiculous emphasis on speed. Saying that about a Sonic game of all things sounds weird and contradictory.
the gameplay of the mastersystem version was different from that of the genesis(megadrive in europe), it was closer to a mario, different but very good game

So after 28 years I pulled out my Sega Master System which whilst a little rusty and dusty still works well. Now im playing it with my daughter. I thought I was pretty good getting up to jungle but watching the entire game. Im imoressed how far it was created and how cool the game is. I am still keen to get past the frustrating jungle..best game..thank you
I gotta be honest, the way collecting the Chaos Emeralds works in this game makes way more sense than any other Sonic game. The whole point is that Robotnik came to South Island or Mobius, whatever the fuck it's called, for the Chaos Emeralds, so you'd think they'd be well hidden in the actual place, and not some other, trippy dimension. I don't really know why no other Sonic games went for this kind

This is SO carefree compared to Sonic on the Genesis...and I like that.
I always thought this to be the best Sonic game. The master system had the best one the rest were just very stressful to play. Completed them but Master system was fun in comparison.

A: No he is not gay. (probably)
B: Even if he WAS gay, why would I care? If he's in love with boys, more power to him! After all, my favourite kinds of people are the ones who use gay/lesbian as an insult.
C: The Master System is inferior for a REASON. It was released before the Genesis (i checked) I honestly think the Bridge Zone sounds fine.
?
Mark Kram the Texas Instruments PSG chip in the Master System can only do square waves and noise. The custom sound chip in the NES adds triangle waves and DPCM sample playback
Mark Kram yeah but... Look up Sonic 1 FM hack for the Yamaha YM2413 chip fitted to Japanese Master Systems, modified European / American Master Systems and the DB Electronics FM Power Base Converter for the Genesis / Mega Drive (Master Everdrive required to run) - listen to that!

I think 6 games is more than enough. And I'm not considering the spin-offs
@@GoosyGooseMX yea, possibly.

Well I gotta be honest, the Game Gear version was enjoyable, especially for being portable, but I prefer this one for its bigger screen size and Sonic's more defined character sprite.

Full games and fully functional. Not half done and later released patches (maybe not even patches for half game if people won't complain, which means easy money for the company) We all can see right through you DLC and half asses games! You just want easy money for not finished product!
And original carts and consoles mostly still work today, just plug in and go!

What if you play master System Version on the Game Gear with the adapter? Wonder if the issues are resolved then for Game Gear owners then?

I can understand how you could have nostalgia for this version, but I don't get how you could actually think it's better than the Genesis version.
+Robin Howard Because the Megadrive/Genesis version is technically superior, but playability is subjective and down to each individual's preferences. I found this version more playable because it was a bit slower and less chaotic. In the Genesis version some levels were too convoluted.

I actually think the Sonic games for Sega Master System, are better than the ones on Sega Genesis/Mega Drive!
Agreed they were more challenging I thought, especially this and Sonic 2 with that awful hang glider, even Alex the kid built in was challenging I never finished it
Outside of Sonic 3 I agree. Sonic 1 in particular is one of the few platforming games of the 8-bit era that made stocking up on lives fun.
That little jingle when the map comes up is awesome.

The graphics, sound, and music are very nice for an 8-bit version.

I thought I was pretty good getting up to jungle but watching the entire game. Im imoressed how far it was created and how cool the game is. I am still keen to get past the frustrating jungle..best game..thank you
2:08 ok so it's basically same as the Geneseis versio---WHAT THE F*** IS THIS?!
Watch the video at Arch Games With all the glitches.
DUDE, over first 5 minutes of THIS video , made me cry ! Those were good times in childhood 😍 miss those days! Big time!!
Master System was my 2nd youngest cousin's 2nd oldest console. When the console was on with no cartridge, this game ran on it.
Why did you say that?
Fantastic, taken me right back to being 6 years old! I hated the jungle, used to get soooo mad at that level 😂
Better then any sonic game today.
I guess you could say that Sonic is the Lord of the Rings
Joke good
In the Scrap Brain 2nd stage, there is a Life in the second hole at the beginning. You missed it.
Just like in Green Hill Act 3
Super Mario Minecrafter that's right!
Jose Manuel Longplays are not meant to be perfect, anyway.
Spike Riley I know, I just wanted to add that detail. I was never able to pass the game without losing a few lives.
You're not alone, my friend. You're not alone on that sentence.
The music sounds nice in 8 bit.
Fun fact, Sonic 1, 2 & 3 chaos on master system are different games than the one's on Mega Drive, not just upgrades like most games.
Wonderful. This takes me back to when i was really young. Still own my old master system
