  • 1968 Buick Skylark Custom Junkyard Find. ** Update** Apparently it was worth it as it sold. Not sure if for the full asking price though. I hope they haggled a little on price.
    Well it looks like the yard is trying to sell them whole when possible. That's a good thing. But this one, being from up north, It had a nice amount of rust. Luckily though the vinyl top did not take out the roof. One thing that was pretty neat was that it was a 3 on the tree. I didn't even notice that at first. I wasn't a fan of the Chevy rally wheels and the hack job on the ac factory ac box to convert it into a heat only car. It appeared to have a repaint but some old plastic filler coming off. Sad that even the bumper was badly rusted. Looked to have been sold originally in Brazil, Indiana.

    I think the paint reference is the paint code. I think it reads "Paint No (number)". Also, the original owner appears to have been from Terre Haute, Indiana. I believe he was born around 1911 and died in 1994 if I have the right person. That would make him about right to buy this type of car in 1968. He would be one year younger than my grandfather, so by 1968, he would have been in his late 50's and this type of Buick would have suited an owner of that age. I think those other notes are for a tractor that Mr. Waldon owned, as there appears to be references to gray paint colors for an IH tractor. On that same paper, reference is made that it was bought at Mark French Buick in Brazil Indiana if you look close at what Mr. Waldon (??) wrote. Mark French and Son was a Buick, Cadillac and Pontiac dealer in that town in Indiana. VIN is 4 for Buick, 44 for Skylark Custom, 39 for 4 door hardtop, 8 for 1968, H for Flint, MI (later called "Buick City") and the rest is the production sequence. I agree with the others that this was some sort of "oddball" order. I wonder if someone removed the power steering or it never had it. Can't tell, looks like it was an original car at one time and then it had a lot of hands in it.

    First car I ever drove was my aunts 1969 Buick Skylark that was a very nice classy car built like a tank compared to the cheap plastic ones of today.

  • @bigcrowfly
    @bigcrowfly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Car was probably a mistaken order (someone forgot to check the auto trans box) & original owner got it cheap. A Buick, fairly loaded, 4 door hardtop (more expensive than a sedan), A/C in a northern climate, uplevel trim, vinyl top, optional v8 with optional 4bbl and dual exhaust. Even in the late 60s, most cars with manual transmissions were stripped 6 cylinder loss leaders.

    Ok I’m confused about people saying the value is in the a/c. I have a 74 Chevy nova that a 4 that that also had factory ac. I ripped the ac and heat out to fit the 454 in. Did I mess the car up? Most 4 doors I see don’t have value plus interior parts are hard to find like seat covers and door panels

    • @kennethsouthard6042
      @kennethsouthard6042 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not as much as there were a lot more Nova's built than Skylarks of this era, so the parts can be more easily located, at least for the next few years. There is also a difference between properly removing the A/C and setting it aside to where it can be reinstalled vs. hacking it out and throwing it in the dumpster where it is gone for good.

    Glad you shared this 1. In '94, I dated a gal who's best friend had a yellow on white 70 custom sedan, 350 2bbl, 3 on the tree, with p/s p frt discs, and a/c. She bought it from a 94 yr old lady who's husband bought it new. The car was supposed to be an automatic, but according to her, the salesman didn't check the box. After many arguments and a threatened law suit, the Buick dealer dropped the price $1,000.00 and he decided that was good enough. When my girlfriend's friend bought it ( for $300.00) it had just 88k on it and needed a clutch. Her boyfriend and I wrestled a clutch into it, and she drove it 2 more yrs before it was stolen from a KMart parking lot and never recovered.

    Definitely a rare car, dunno if they bought it just to rob the running gear off of. Maybe those alone are worth the $1300. Or maybe they were gonna restore it to some extent, although I could see that there could be some $$$ in keeping a numbers matching car with a rare combination.
