The 6 best ways to fix a front derailleur not shifting to highest gear

  • In this video I’m going to explain how to fix a front derailleur not shifting to highest gear.
    I recently installed a Hollowtech II crankset with new chainrings. I went from a 42 teeth to a 46 teeth outer ring, which meant I had to change the front derailleur as well.
    This was because the bigger chainring forced the derailleur to sit higher on the down tube. And this would not be possible with my current E-type front derailleur mount.
    So I bought the exact same Shimano FD-M770 front derailleur with a seat tube mount. This of course means I would need to correctly setup and configure the front derailleur, so it’ll shift properly.

    The front derailleur of my proudly restored Schwinn Moab 3 had been working smoothly for months until it suddenly after hitting a bump on the road it refused to shift to the outer ring. As I went thru these 6 ways, I found the 7th way when I noticed that the crank was too loose, o dear, shouldn't be loose at all! I tightened the bolt and hey, magic, the shifting is now great again. So I've just learnt that it pays to check these bolts from time to time. Thanks for the vid, it took me there, cheers.

    Great video. A new front derailleur might be in my future..or/and shifters. Why not? I've already replaced the bottom bracket and pedals this week, and need to learn how to true a back wheel. Bottom line is bikes need constant attention if you ride them..

    Fantastic description of the mechanics!
    I have a 2013 scalpel si that I switched from a 39/26 to a 42/28. I made a custom titanium swing arm front derailleur mount to move the derailleur up 6.5mm. Is the derailleur mount option you used applicable? Are there also separate derailleurs sold for different heights (ring sizes) for fixed mount systems?

      You can buy loose E-type brackets, so I guess you could buy one for a crank with a 42T chainring. Whether or not that bracket is compatible with your derailleur I wouldn't know.

    I would like to add another possible problem, which is what I just fixed on my bike. If the black "casing" with the metal parts at the ends that goes over the metal shifter cable is somehow not in the metal groove and in the thing by the shifter then you have to get it back to where it is meant to be in order to shift. You first have to loosen the tension of the shifter cable, then adjust the black "casing," and then finally make the tension to be at the right level. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the video. I followed it and can get the chain to shift from the smaller front sprocket to the second smallest sprocket but cant get to go to the biggest sprocket.
    I can go back and forth now up shifting and down shifting on these 2 sprockets but when i press the shifting lever to go to the biggest one it seems there's no resistance or force on the lever like the other sprockets when I'm shifting them but if i pull on a cable with my hand the derailleur will move over to the biggest sprocket when I'm stopped and looking at the derailleur

    • @GIChow
      @GIChow 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Did you solve this? I have exactly this issue. When in the 2nd chain ring (at the front) no real resistance is felt (just slight spring resistance) while pushing the left thumb lever. It won't go into 3. Removing the cover of the shifter, (Shimano st-ef60-l on a Ridgeback Velocity) nothing is obviously being caught inside the shifter when pushing the thumb lever and the big white cam doesn't rotate at all (it only rotates when shifting from 1 to 2). I got from 2 into 3 one time by shifting the rear gear to 1 first and then pushing the thumb lever firmly past the long travel where there is no resistance and then all the way in as far as it will go.

      @@GIChow No fix yet

    • @GIChow
      @GIChow 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rotaxrider OK this is what worked for me
      1) take up slack in the gear cable (loosened bolt securing the cable at the derailleur end, pulled cable tight with pliers, tightened bolt, unscrewed cable adjuster at shifter end to tighten cable further so there was no play and slack being taken up when pushing on the left thumb shifter)
      2) When in front gear 2 I pushed and released the thumb shifter quickly several times until there was resistance i.e. when it began to catch internally in the shifter and pull the cable towards gear 3. I did this a few times from 2 and it eventually started reliably catching internally to allow it to move to gear 3.
      So this works because there is a pawl in the shifter that gets a bit stuck and doesn't grab the spool that winds the gear cable. Repeatedly moving that pawl back and forth seemed to free it. There are lots of videos on degreasing the thumb shifter internals with solvent to achieve the same (i.e. get the pawl to move freely).

    What's the solution you cleaned the chain with?

  • @goedelite
    @goedelite ปีที่แล้ว

    A problem that prevented my frond der. from shiting onto the largest gear ring was the routing of the cable. As the bicycle was delivered to me with a pull-down cable, its routing was a vertical pull-down. In order to move the der. cage outward, a horizontal component of the cable tension was needed. I removed the cable from the plastic routing piece beneath the bottom bracket and routed it instead around the right side of the bracket so that its tension would not only pull the cam down but also tug it and the cage to the right over the largest gear ring. Problem solved! It was a homemade solution, but I could think of none better. I can't understand how the manufacturer, Dynacraft, of the bike could have designed the cable routing as I found it.

    Hi. Great video - and lovely bike. You say that the D must be positioned 2 mm above the largest chainring. On your video - about 2:05 - that gap between the top of the teeth and the D looks to be about 5 mm. Am I right? Is the 2 mm crucial? Asking for a friend that has just bought a used Batavus women's bike with 3 chainrings that will not shift to the largest cog. The barrel adjuster looks to be broken as well... Thanks

    • @restorationdotbike

      Even though it might look like 5 mm I might have readjusted it after shooting the video. 2 mm is about right, notwithstanding 5 mm might also work.

    No matter how much I loosen the barrel adjuster or tighten it, or mess with the hi and low limit screws, I can't get the derailleur to shift to top gear on the front sprocket. Would loosening the bolt that keeps the cable attached to the derailleur and tightening the cable make any difference?

    • @restorationdotbike
      @restorationdotbike  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would move the derailleur cage by hand with the cable loose, to see if it can reach the chainring in the first place. If not, you might have a bottom bracket with an incorrect (too wide) spindle length, which moves the crank with the chainrings too far from the front derailleur. If this is not the case and you can get the derailleur cage over the biggest chainring, then my next best guess is that the cable isn't tight enough, and shifting first takes up cable slack before actually moving the cage.

    • @restorationdotbike
      @restorationdotbike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If it doesn't shift down it means there's too much tension on the cable. Moving the barrel adjuster inwards releases tension. See if that works. If you don't have any room left because the barrel adjuster is already all the way in and you still don't shift, you'll need to release the cable at the front derailleur about 1 mm as shown in the video. Then rinse and repeat the steps.

    Ive got a xtr m901 front derailleur. In manual it mentions a 46t large chainring and a 48t large chainring. Mine is 44t on outer chainring and the deraliur doesnt follow the curvature for more than 2-3t im having massive problems. Best ive got it to do is go up to middle and then upto top and back to middle but after that it wont drop back to bottom.
    In the manual it says if cant go from middle to bottom turn the low adjustment qauter of a turn until it drops so ive done this but then you lose the push for it to go up from bottom to middle cant win!

      @@restorationdotbike i wouldn't want to swap the chainset out, its a nice gold annodised aluminum one with good teeth (CPI cyclone) i think on a 97 kona cindercone, if i swapped out the large chainring from a 44t to a 46t would that solve it? Or would the lower chainrings need be bigger aswell? Because manual only mentions outer chainring size and im sure people do customize small and medium chainring sizes.

    This bike was really easy to assemble th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

    • @restorationdotbike
      @restorationdotbike  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are a number of reasons why you wouldn't want a 1x setup.
      1. To have a remotely similar gear ratio, you'd also need to swap out your cassette.
      2. Since one chainring now needs to cover the entire width of the cassette the angle of the chain and the sprocket, especially the biggest one, may start to sit a too large an angle, which can cause slipping issues. This is especially an issue with mountain bike gearing.
      3. Some people want a triple
      4. Changing parts instead of reusing them is always (much) more expensive
      5. Technically speaking front chainrings meant for 1x setups differ from those used in triples and doubles. They have teeth that better prevent the chain from coming off, since it never needs to.

    • @Strange_Brew
      @Strange_Brew 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@restorationdotbike yes I changed to a narrow wide chainring. I have never dropped a chain with this 1x set up. I have more confidence now standing going uphill under power . I have dropped chains before with my 2x and once twisted my ankle. Yes I also changed my cassette with a Sram 11 sp. 11-36. I had to use a derailleur extension (cheap on eBay) so it can reach the Lowest gear. I do miss the closer gear ratios however my bike is lighter and more efficient now.
      Jonas won the Tour de France on a Sram 1x12. I think the front derailleur will soon be a thing of the past. I alway hated shifting that thing.
