Here's why you should buy a vintage Giant mountain bike
This video is going to be about Giant and my history with the brand, and the Giant Coldrock from 1994 I restored. Although I have to admit it wasn’t that big a restoration, considering the fact the bike was in almost perfect condition.
Giant doesn’t have the vintage allure of let’s say a Cannondale, Specialized, GT, or even Trek, and have something of a low-quality, budget reputation. But their affordability has made many good examples available today for a fraction of the price it would cost you to pick many other bikes.
And not only their rigid steel and aluminum versions are a joy to behold. They’ve also made some extremely flashy carbon bikes. I guess all I’m saying is the next time you’re thinking about a bike restoration project, maybe this post will make you look up some of those great-looking bikes from the Taiwanese Giant, pun intended.

Trek 800 mountain bike restoration
มุมมอง 2.7Kปีที่แล้ว
I recently did an article on how to do a cheap bike restoration and this Trek 800 was featured. In this article I’m going to dive into this Trek 800 mountain bike restoration and discuss why I feel it’s still special enough to be worthy of my time fixing it up. The bike is meant for my daughter, who wants to ride a mountain bike because I do. And it had to be blue, and preferably be meant for w...
3 things to consider when doing a cheap bike restoration
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
With this article I’m going to delve into what bikes to consider when going for a cheap bike restoration. I’ve restored quite a number of bicycles, and the far majority of those bicycles would set me back money-wise far more than I would’ve liked. How to permanently fix play in a Mavic freehub body in 3 easy steps
มุมมอง 15Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m going to show you how to permanently fix the play in a Mavic freehub in a couple of easy steps. I bought a second-hand set of Mavic Crossmax SLR wheels for my Cannondale Scalpel. Even with a new original chain and cassette the chain kept slipping on the biggest sprocket. As it turned out the rear wheel was dealing with a very common issue caused by one of the biggest design fl...
Cannondale Super V - I restored my dream bike
มุมมอง 9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my Cannondale Super V and to me it’s a special bike indeed. It’s the typical story of the bike you wanted as a kid but was unable to afford at the time. Adjusted for inflation you’d pay around $4000 dollars today. It was sitting at my local thrift store totally wrecked. It was obvious it had been sitting outside, which is a death knell for any bike. I decided there and then than no matt...
Panaracer Smoke Dart Review
มุมมอง 4.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m going to give you my Panaracer Smoke Dart review. If you’re looking for true skin wall 26″ trail tires, the Panaracer Smoke Dart combination is one of the very few solutions out there. Panaracer always makes very nice tires. I’ve bought a bunch of them and these Smoke and Dart are a very obvious for any retro build. Join the Facebook Group: groups/996447607429641/...
Restoring a pair of vintage 1995 Magura HS22 brakes
มุมมอง 5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this article I’m going to show the process involved in restoring a pair of 1995 Magura HS22 brakes. For as long as the brakes have been on my bike, I have been itching to restore them. Not only were the brake levers and pistons scratched up, the cables were also damaged and too short. And the brakes themselves were in desperate need of a refill and bleed. I came across CODA XYZ handlebars. A...
Deity TMAC review
มุมมอง 5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m going to give you my Deity TMAC review. As much as I like vintage mountain bikes, some older parts are so bad compared to their current counterparts that only a true purist would not upgrade them. And caged pedals belong to that category. I prefer upgrading to flat pedals, since I like the flexibility it offers and because I can simply ride using my running shoes. And I’ve ded...
Koga Miyata Skyrunner Carbolite vintage mountain bike
มุมมอง 2.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This video features a 1991 Koga Miyata Skyrunner Carbolite. This bike belonged to a former bike mechanic who’d sadly passed away since. And only 7 of these bikes were sold in the Netherlands at the time, which makes this mountain bike extremely rare indeed. It’s a competition cross country mountain bike, and as with all top models of that period, it features a frame triangle composed of Carboli...
Tune Wasserträger 2.0 review
มุมมอง 2.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this article I’m going to give you my honest Tune Wasserträger 2.0 review. It’s a carbon bottle cage where the bolts weigh over half the weight of the bottle cage itself, for a total of 14 grams. The bottle cage is 9 grams. I paid €48.80, which is more than 56 USD excluding shipping costs. So the main question is why on earth would you spend that kind of money on something, that besides the ...
Autumn bike ride
มุมมอง 2633 ปีที่แล้ว
Every week my wife and I go on a little trip. If gives us one more opportunity to connect. She likes walking, I like cycling. She picks hiking trails, I just dive into the woods with my bike. I decided to film one of my autumn bike rides. Instead of adding a voiceover, I decided to let the imagery do the talking. My voiceover would serve as a distraction at best. And as I state in the end: life...
How to install a Shimano Bike Brake Booster
มุมมอง 5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m going to explain how to correctly install this Shimano Bike Brake Booster I was lucky enough to accidentally find online. Although a bit more exotic, they fall into the same category as bar extensions in terms of being a decidedly ’90s tech upgrade for mountain bikes. In general, original vintage bike brake booster are quite rare to obtain and I’ve never seen one on any of the...
How to create a bicycle bar extension out of a stem adapter
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m going to explain how to use a stem adapter as a bicycle bar extension hack. I often ride in places where I have to rely on navigation to find my way. I have an iPhone and a LifeProof LifeActive bike mount so I can use specific apps handsfree. If you can’t place a bike phone mount on the stem, which is the case with the very wide Syncros Cattleprod stem, you’re forced to look a...
Hollowtech II bottom bracket removal and installation
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m going to explain how to perform a Hollowtech II bottom bracket removal and installation. I had calculated my gear ratio, and swapped out the middle ring. In turn this caused the front derailleur to no longer work, which meant the outer ring had to go as well. I decided to add two new Specialités TA chainrings. As suggested on alu frame i will try the stronger JB WELD steel stick. is it still holding up well instead of the original you've used? Thanks
yes

Good vid shit
Nice work. Would this work on a carbon matte black frame? And should I aplly touch up paint before or after these steps ?
it won't work on matte frames. Matte frames are matt because they don't have a clearcoat but a coarse paintjob instead. doing this on a matte finish will turn it into a glossy finish instead because you smooth out its coarseness.
What if you do not have a chain tool
Buy one
So nice ❤️ Love it. I Just bought a trek800. I am not Sure What Kind of Tool I need for the bottom bracket. Which one did you use?
I sold this bike so don't now. Just look at your bottom bracket, search for "bottom bracket removal tool" and determine what tool will fit yours.
I saw you removed and polished , but how can u prevent the aluminum surface from oxidized?
You can't, so it'll get cloudy again over time, especially when it get's into contact with rainwater. So keep it clean and dry.
Great, but cones are easily replaced. What about a pitted hub cup.???
I have Shimano UN55 and just done over 1000 miles and still smooth like new and i ride mainly on road so only little bit dirty and raining condition i try keep away if i can and hoping will last me 10,000 miles finger crossed
There is no hole for me to screw the bolt into but I have the same crank, I’m so confused
You might have the same crank, but you don't have the same bottom bracket.
yes I saved a lot on labor thank you
Mooi werk! had niet eens door dat je Nederlands was tot ik Marktplaats zag ;)
For years I've been using just a clean cloth with a dab of turps. It worked great sprayed on to the whitewall tyres of my car; brushed lightly with a nail brush and then rinsed off. It never failed! For bike tyres clean off the grime with a cloth dabbed with turps. For me it has worked every time, and no damage to the tyres or rims.
recently found this one out myself by accident.
A quick release skewer broke on me two weeks ago and I just recovered from the crash. Thank you for making this video
I hope you recover quickly from your injuries. But keep in mind the following if you ever ride another bike with a quick release. A quick release breaking should not result in a crash, unless you're jumping and the wheel comes loose or anything. Your frame does not sit on the quick release. The quick release's function is to hold the wheel in place, while the frame rests on the wheel hub axle through which the quick release goes.
Qual a medida do rolamento?

Followed your instructions and it Worked perfectly thanks

Hi, Joe. Everytime I search a nice kit of vintage wheels for my ice red 19,5” 1995 Trek Y 22 I come Back to this video of yours. It is really very clear and explains a lot about what Spinergy rev-X-roks carbon wheels really are. I’ m just wondering if those flaws couldn’t be repaired or enhanced before they show a faulty behaviour on the trail. Replacing rivets by pieces of carbon inside of the edges of the spokes, making them a massive piece only in contact with the aluminum edge. Turning my rear v-brake (it was a cantilever one) into a brake disc type with a special holder in the rear could reduce stress on those wheels. Another brand of 26” wheels of the time was SPIN that only made a tri-spoke mountain bike hollow carbon monocoque wheel bonded to aluminum braking surface rims like Spinergy did. By the way the Spinergy wheels for 700C tires could be used on a mountain bike tire ? My best wishes from Brazil.
I don't know if damaged Spinergy spokes can be repaired. I would ask a carbon repair expert for advise. I've done a lot of customization fo bike parts to make them work, but I would be very hesitant to do that with these wheels. And I don't know if I mention it in the video, but I don't use these wheels on singletrack and don't have any intention to do so. I use it for road/gravel purposes to absolutely minimize the risk of spoke damage. You can't use the 700C versions for mountainbikes. Even if they would fit diameter-wise, they have a smaller rim with so you're stuck fitting road tires on those.
Thanks for the review. I've just fitted 700x35c Speed Kings on my Merida Scultura Endurance di2. Not tried them out but the bike certainly looks more like a cyclocross now than a road bike. Looking forward to testing them out along with my new ISM seat.
My first 10 speed chain install went smoothly after watching!
Ali express rocks
Wow, rims are strong af. You were cranking on that hub.
Did the restoration not happen?
Still working on it. I finished a couple of other bikes in between. Life got in the way
Nice shoes and socks... 😉
Ok, informative, you need to adapt and be creative, not everyone can afford to buy the entire Park Tool catalog
someone likes projection on his hands
I had some rusty bike wheels that I used Flitz with 0000 steel wool. They look like new now.
It takes me about 16 hours to hand polish two rims. 2 hours a day while drinking beer and 8+ days later I'm done! It takes a lot of time by hand
I can appreciate what this guy did in this video of restoring this bike saddle. Me personally I don’t have those skills so if I find a destroyed saddle, it usually ends up in the trash and I usually just buy a new one because that’s easier. Sadly, but you know when you don’t have those kinds of skills and it’s just easier to replace something then to try to restore something that you know you have no idea how to restore. I mean you’re gonna go for the easiest option and that is Replace it. I mean, if I had those skills, I probably would be restoring more saddles and keeping a lot more saddles out of the landfill, but unfortunately I don’t have those skills so most of the time they just end up in the garbage.
i dont like those side inlays looks like the tyre is worn out. thanks buddy.
from where can I find that aluminium kid to repair my free hub?
I have this bike, but in my country there are no spare parts for such parts and from abroad it will be expensive
duizend maal dank! werd er gillend gek van!
Great Video 🚴🚴🚴
great! I have my first hydraulic rim brake setup and was at a total loss making sense of the service manual. This gives me the missing context, thanks
I have all my parts ready to rebuild mine right now! This video is just what I needed short and concise!
Derailleur problems is without a doubt the most annoying issue on a bike. After you've spent an hour trying to diy it frustration and anger builds. And now, an hour and half into it I'm close to go demo ranch and see how many 300 win mag it takes to cut it in half!
Thank youuuuuuuuu so much
Haha, you're welcome. Glad I could help.
Retitle 'How not to replace bike seat'
I have the same bike. I need replacement parts for the rear brake but I don't know what I am looking for. Any help would be appreciated!
I got a giant upland se out of a dump master several years ago. The chain is stretched and the cogs are toast. Replacing these and it wil be back to new.
Looks = Cantilever, everything else it's Vbrakes.
Worked like a charm, thank you!
do you have to use sandpaper if theyre new?
