This may have given me the answer I needed. Pulled out my 30 year old Schwinn Mirada Sport that I bought in high school and haven't ridden since before the pandemic (so fall 2019 at the latest I last rode) and the front shifter is frozen on the middle ring. The Shimano 100 GS mechanism may also be gummed up but I did see some slack in the front shift cable and I do remember trying to fix this earlier by messing with the limit screws as at that time, I only had two of the three front gears. Rear shifter is working on all seven gears (although it wants to jump gears at seemingly random times). Thanks for a few things to try before I resort to bringing it in for service.
Regarding my previous reply, I found the problem. The front derailleur was factory set too high off of third ring. I lowered it and presto, it now shifts to first ring. Now I can sleep tonite. Take care.
Thanks so much! I picked up my new bike and only after I'd got home realised it wouldn't shift into the big ring. Thanks to your video I was able to identify that I needed to adjust the high limit screw and easily sort the issue myself without taking the bike back to the shop. One difference with my bike was that screwing it in increased the limit while screwing it out decreased it, so initially I made it worse but quickly worked out to go the other way.
Thank you so so much. Just bought a second hand bike and it wouldn't shift up. This has saved me £££s not having to take it to get it looked at and fixing it myself. Thank you
Excellent Explanation! I really liked the info on what the limit screws actually do! and the slow and steady approach to a problem 1 whole turn, 1/2 turn etc untill it was sorted

Very helpful to me as I bought a Schwinn Aluminum Comp 27.5 mountain bike at Walmart that was poorly put together and set up. The biggest problem was the front chain ring would not go from smallest chain ring to middle chain ring but it would go to the largest chain ring then down to middle chain ring. Been a while since I adjusted derailleur's on a bike and this was a big help. Took me some time and I had to start over from initial set up. Thanks very much for explaining how to identify the high and low limit screw. I had them the wrong way around. Shimano gears, the high limit screw is closest to the frame. At least on my bike.
@@BikeTeacher You're so right about the concept thing! I'd watched other videos and it wasn't clicking. I'm dusting off my 20 year old Kona Nunu! Anyway thanks again. 🔧
Thank you! I just bought a used Trayl for very cheap. I knew it had couple issues and this will probably help the most relevant one of shifting out of big ring 1
Hiya, that was really helpful, cheers.I've got a problem with my rear derailleur also - shifting up the chain jumps around the chainrings, going from one speed and clunking to next & back again - it doesn't seem to want to 'hold onto' a gear/chainring.
If not due to derailleur adjustment it could then be a worn (stretched due to extended use) chain that skips around instead of holding tight onto the cog teeth, or even a worn shifter if the springs are worn out. Chains have to be replaced after miles of use, especially if ridden in dirty or unlubricated conditions.
hanks so much the gear cable had popped out and when i adjusted the back gears to the largest sprocket with a lot of force I was able to move it far enough to re attach it.. cheers
Best of the best... simplicity of the complexity explained and well presented. Thanks mate for your time and going to subscrive all your videos. Cheers...
Hi. Good vid. Just a thought to cover the adjustment of gear two. Limit screws are easy for adjusting rings 1 and 3, but adjusting for number 2 can be a real bugger. You can set up 1 and 3 ok, but then it racks all the way to 1, skipping number two. The 2nd ring is all about tension adjustment and you do not have much adjustment on the barrel, often requiring experimentation with tension, undoing and redoing the cable tension nut.
Great video! Especially adds to my knowledge of how to identify the low and high limit screws. I have Shimano Tiagra (latest) and the instruction sheet is a bit vague in that it just says "A" or "B". My problem is that despite working through the cable tautness and the high limit screw, the chain still refuses to move over to the largest chainring. (There are two only.) I am pushing the lever inward as much as possible and it won't budge. This is a brand new Kona Rove NRB 2018 with Shimano Tiagra throughout. I have brought it to my LBS where he adjusted everything and it works fine on the rack. I rode it on the way back and shifted once up onto the big ring but when I went do a ride, nothing happens. Tempted to take it to another LBS so I won't face the embarrassment of facing him again. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
Hi, if it was working in the repair stand it should be working for you. Sounds like the mechanic should have offered some shifting tips. I’m assuming there are some clicks or shifts still available in the shifter. When pressing the downshift lever push it firmly and push it twice or may times. Yet the same thing when upshifting. You may not be pressing hard enough. Depending in the shifter two attempts may be in order to fully activate the full movement of the front derailleur. Let me know.
@@BikeTeacher I tried upshifting for half an hour yesterday on my ride, a few minutes on my home stand, and another 15 minutes right now with no success. The shifter either moves all the way or it stops after a few mms if I try a half shift then full shift up. I would then downshift several times in order to "clear" it and then try again. I'm beginning to wonder if the shifter is defective?
@@waisinglee1509 you got it. Just replaced all the cables for a lady at our "Repair Cafe". She already bought new shifters, like $25au. But this was an old bike. Naturally, the rear derailleur usually dies first, meaning bikeshops throw out perfectly good front shifter switches all the time, being that they come in pairs. Just take it back to where you got it. They can diagnose it, fix it and replace shifter, if required. Don't mean to confuse, but just because a part is new does not mean it is good.
Best video I’ve found about this so far. I have created issues though. I aligned the front derailleur and Everything fell down when I loosened the clamp. I then had to loosen the cable to get the derailleur back in place, and now everything is completely out of working range. When I shift to the 2nd ring in the front, the chain shifts from 1st to 2nd in the rear.. Now fix my problem with some better advice. What position should my cable housing tensioner nut be in when I reconnect the cable? All messed up in VT. It was all working, and now it’s not.
Start from scratch, loosen the cable pinch bolt, make sure the shifter is in the 1st gear, double and triple check this. realign the front derr to the old mark if available, make sure cage is inline with the chainring as well, nor angled. Hopefully you did not touch the limit screws at all. Gently pull on end of cable while testing shifting, leave shifter in 1st gear. Reattach cable. You asked about "cable housing tensioner nut" I assume you mean barrel adjuster? Half way in , half way out.
Bike Teacher , thanks, the barrel adjusters is what I was referring to. I managed to get the first 7 gears selecting well enough. I gave up on any other gears from the front chain rings. I decided I didn’t need them anyway. Most of my riding is slower and on dirt roads. I get plenty of speed from G7 and use all brakes going down hills, more than enough speed for bike paths too. For any future improvements I would have to replace cables, cable housing and chain. The front derailleur is ancient and that would need an upgrade as well. So I’m Happy with an old bike with semi functioning gears for now.
I was having a weird problem on my road bike. When shifting from the small chainring to the big, it struggled, and would often then drop the chain into the inside of the small chainring. Super weird. After some fiddle-farting around, I figured out the front derailleur needed to be moved up vertically a hair. Just added the comment because I didn’t see anyone with a similar problem online anywhere, or how to fix it.

That was a sweet explanation. Now I just need to put it into practice. Even if my abilities aren't up to it I feel like I learned something!
Cool!! Getting the concept can go a long way. Thanks for the comment.
@@BikeTeacher You're so right about the concept thing! I'd watched other videos and it wasn't clicking. I'm dusting off my 20 year old Kona Nunu! Anyway thanks again. 🔧
best video so far!
sufficiently and clearly explained
thanks mate
+Fernando Mendoza-Puccini Glad you liked it. I appreciate it!
this video was perfect. I was finally able to understand what I was doing wrong and fixed my derailleur. THANKS
You are welcome Roland!
Wow , if I didn’t bother to troubleshoot myself by looking a you tube , I’ve would’ve spent 49 plus labor , good video
Thank you.
Great vid - simple, clear, and methodical... helped me while I was wrestling with a FD for over an hour...
Thank you glad it helped you.
Thank you! I just bought a used Trayl for very cheap. I knew it had couple issues and this will probably help the most relevant one of shifting out of big ring 1
Great, let me know how it goes.
Just fixed my bike, this is the only video that truly helped. Thank you :):)
Your welcome Katya!
Very useful. Sorted out the slack on my front derailleur within minutes.
Awesome!!
Hiya, that was really helpful, cheers.I've got a problem with my rear derailleur also - shifting up the chain jumps around the chainrings, going from one speed and clunking to next & back again - it doesn't seem to want to 'hold onto' a gear/chainring.
Sorry, I just saw your comment. DFW Rider has the right idea.
Thank you - that was really helpful - I've watched a lot of videos on this and yours was the most clear - great job!
Glad it was helpful Paul!
My issue was the opposite, easy to up shift difficult to down shift, I'll try the opposite tonight!
hanks so much the gear cable had popped out and when i adjusted the back gears to the largest sprocket with a lot of force I was able to move it far enough to re attach it.. cheers
Glad it helped
Thank you. Excellent video. No wasted time, great camera work and explanations.
I've watched a bunch of these and you explained it the best. Thank you
Thanks you so much.
Best of the best... simplicity of the complexity explained and well presented. Thanks mate for your time and going to subscrive all your videos. Cheers...
Thanks for the sub Laku!
Just fixed my front derailleur.
Thanks for a simplified explanation
You're welcome, Najam!
Thank you so much ....was having problem shifting to the biggest one
Your welcome, happy to help. ⚙️
Hi.
You are correct. Thanks
*Try
Great video. Clear explanations with good close up shots.
Glad it was helpful Micheal!
Fantastic video with clear instructions and break down of the gear change functions.
Thank you!!
Very well explained and easy to follow, thank you.
Thank you Ken!
Thanks man my situation was your opener with a loose cable it looked like yours exactly tightened it up hopefully that works.🍻🤜🏻
So I’m Happy with an old bike with semi functioning gears for now.
great video, very helpful. a quibble: "unloosen" means tighten.
I have been getting lots of feedback for this blunder, lol. Thanks Jim
Thank you so much for that. This video just saved me $120
Oh nice!! Glad it worked.
Nice! That is weird and uncommon but still a legit problem. Thanks!
Thank you man. Best front derailleur video. Peace ✌️
Thank you I did the set screws and it work like it supposed to 👍🏻 the set screws were all set wrong
Your welcome Alex!!
