JEGS 90098 Rooftop Cargo Carrier - Review

  • I took this cargo box on a weeklong trip where I did about 600 miles of driving. I was very pleased with performance of the cargo box and it allowed us to free up a lot of space in the car.
    I forgot to mention in the video that wind noise with this cargo box on the review was noticeable above 50 mph and got progressively louder with speed, but was never excessively loud. I only took the car up to a max of 65 mph on the highway and could easily listen to music or a podcast without noticing the noise from the box.
    The box had a negligible effect on driving/handling of the car during both city and highway driving. We did notice a small amount of rocking when following a large semi-truck, but this wasn’t severe enough to cause any concern.

    Mine is on 24/7 and completely water tight….also a note for the locks, a squirt of WD-40 and the keys will slide in basically by themselves,lol…it’s just because the cylinder needs lubrication that’s all, a simple fix….also there are dimples inside so you can drill it out to better position the box on the vehicle, don’t just settle for the stock holes….it’s a fantastic box at a killer price.

    On a 2019 Subaru Outback with the OEM crossbars system I had to drill 2 holes at each connection point, so 8 holds in total, to get this to fit. I bought Gorilla waterproof tape to seal the holes I won't be using. I'm going to grab some thin seal to put on the front of the lid to help waterproof it from oncoming rain. Thanks for the video.

    Hey Alex. Thanks for the video. I just purchased this and I am waiting for this to arrive. I also purchased the CargoLoc 2-Piece 52" Aluminum Roof Top Cross Bar Set - Fits Maximum 46” Span Across Existing Raised Side Rails with Gap - Features Keyed Locking Mechanism, Silver - So once both pieces arrive, I'll be mounting and then attaching the cargo box. We have a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, so I was glad to see yours in the video. Ready for our camping trip to central California Easter Weekend. Seems like you are pretty happy with the style, make, durability and cost. Would you agree? I'll keep you posted.

      Jeremy C unfortunately no. But I got these on Amazon here: www.amazon.com/CargoLoc-2-Piece-Aluminum-Roof-Cross/dp/B00GA2HKAU. These were less than $60 and have worked great! My only complaint has been that they whistle pretty loudly above 40 mph. A piece of duct tape solved that though.

    How far apart should we set the cross rails?

    • @alexmichaud1243
      @alexmichaud1243  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe 24-inches (at least per the Amazon description). You can always set the rails up but leave them loose. Then place the box on top and slide the rails as needed. Of course, don't forget to tighten the rails afterwards!

    is it noisy under speed? Like does it whistle or hum with wind?

    • @alexmichaud1243
      @alexmichaud1243  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! It isn't super loud, no. It is somewhat noticeable, but not louder than a set of winter tires. The cross bars by themselves are louder, honestly. There is a hollow "cavity" under the bars that make a kind of a whistle at anything about about 40 mph. However, I used a bit of duct tape to cover them up and that took care of the whistle.

    • @TheNutCollector
      @TheNutCollector 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryanm2084 the u bolts that attach the bottom half to the roof rack seem to hold up okay. The locks that hold the top half to the bottom half are kinda flimsy and seem to be the issue. Apparently, side winds can blow the top off. I drilled holes where the lip of both halves meet and use zip ties. I just keep a knife or pair of scissors handy.
