    I've added a wind fairing (40 inch Inno amzn.to/2W5G9U4 ) which I believe reduces wind noise. Wind noise is about the same as a comparable Thule I have experience with but with a different SUV. Its still noticeable in a way where freeway travel sounds like its more windy than usual, when I don't think it is. Also a drop of 10-20% in MPG regular driving / cruising speeds (versus completely naked without Cargo box, aero crossbars). I'll update as a I drive more, just haven't been doing as much during COVID-19.

    • @RandyHarter
      @RandyHarter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Amazon link now points to the small 31" fairing. What part number did you end up getting?

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They must have sold out of the 40 inch. The one you want is dependent on the width of your car and roof rail system. The 40 inch was the right size for my Crosstrek. I don’t know the part number off hand.

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The straps attach the mounting claws inside the box. Look for the loops on the claws, you will see. I've never used them because I keep the box pretty full or empty.

  • @anan7s294

    It would be great to show the practicality of the box by filling it with a full size spare wheel (normal and deflated if there's a puncture) and few hard body luggage bags of different size.

    The mounting hardware is concerning. All of the other boxes I've seen have a loop through. These C clamp style mounts seem to place a lot of stress on the sides, which would be a weak point. I can't help but wonder if they will get loose or break off over time.

  • @isaacturton868
    @isaacturton868 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks so much for the review. It was really needed for this product. I was worried about the clamps because the product doesn't show them at all! Which is pretty dumb on their part. Anyways what crossbars do you have to go with your Subaru? I also have a crosstrek, but I am still trying to decide which crossbars to use that fit the pre installed "runners" on the cross trek. Thanks again!

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Isaac. You're welcome. That's exactly why I created the video, there were so many questions I had and not answered. I took the chance and thought it'd help others.
      I currently use OEM crossbars from Subaru. Thing is these OEM ones don't lock. So if that's a concern, I'd look for elsewhere. These clones look good to me for under $90, but also do not lock ( amzn.to/38ClJcl ).
      Subaru sells a lot of Thule products in their catalog so you can't go wrong there. Just a bit pricey for me, and probably overkill.
      I also bought these CargoLocs ( amzn.to/38Cw7Rr ) because they were cheap on Amazon, and they lock. Reviews aren't bad, just need to add some silicone tape to reduce wind noise and it'd be good to go. I haven't installed them yet... when I do, I might make a video.
      Hope that helps!

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In California, I haven’t had any rain storms since. By design I can’t see how anything could get very wet in normal conditions though, definitely not from top or sides in natural conditions. As far as noise, just sounds more windy during the drive. I’ve also added a wind fairing though.

    Is there a speed limit when these boxes are installed? How much speed can it withstand?

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s the same disclaimer about speed as other roof cargo boxes. Here in California I drive up and down from LA to SF. 80 MPH is sometimes the safe speed to be traveling on the 5 and I’ve experienced no issues. But I can understand why it’s not advised. I think I cover the MPH in the video in the paperwork. It’s the same advised speed for those towing a trailer. Always check and re-check the mounts though. I've found the rubber shifts.

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I definitely notice more wind noise. Also there is definitely a decrease (as expected) in MPG.
      About the same as Thule and Yakima. Adding a wind fairing makes a big difference in wind and MPG. Without, expect a 15-20% drop in MPG - higher the faster you go. With wind fairing and full loaded car, just did a 30 MPG trip down from SF to LA, but at 70 MPH average in freeway. Still a bit too early to tell total overall MPG hit, but I think its at least 10%.

But now that pandemic is over, I would have stuck with a whole system instead so that I have less keys to worry about. But I got my money’s worth as I took it on thousands of miles of trips.

    I bought a Thule 16 cubic feet for $350. I returned it because it leaked. So much for a name brand. These things are way too expensive so I will make my own.
