Heard this version by Johnny Cash on the American Forces radio the night before I flew out of Vietnam after 10 months there with the Australian Army. It struck a chord then and choked me up with bittersweet feelings of relief that I was going home but at the same time deep and profound thoughts of my mates who wouldn't be joining me. When I was bad in my alcoholism, I listened to this song every day before I got out of bed, to remember that there was a chance I could have a story like Johnny cash - addict turned preacher, “outlaw” who became successful. Now I listen to it every day to remind myself how sad those times were, and to inspire me to keep on track. Someone I know just passed away due to alcoholism. He died after losing everything. Someone at the funeral told me this was his favorite song. I never knew that before. Now I wonder if he listened to it and thought of all the things he lost due to the alcohol. For some reason this song makes me happy. I remember when I was a teenager, my father drank every Saturday and he was always aggressive, either verbally or physically. I hated Saturdays but I loved Sundays because he was no longer drunk and he was so hungover that he was sick and couldn't drink. So I would go out in the mornings, stroll on the lonely sidewalks and think about this song. I thought, I can hear the church bells, I can see the sunshine, I can see good fathers swinging their children and everything is alright. And the next Saturday is far away. And I felt strong because I thought how my family doesn't even know this song and I do and it is my world where I can be safe. Today, the weekends are good. My father no longer drinks that much, I live separately and every Sunday I go to church and then visit my family. My mom makes the fried chicken, and everything is OK. Still, every Sunday morning it has become like a ritual to listen to this song and life feels good.
Yep. Sometimes I didn’t even want to wake up. The man in black. There will never be another Johnny Cash. I'm grateful to still be able to see and hear him all these years later. And I love that guitar.
Long Live Johnny Cash. You're legacy will be remembered.
No one like him! A legend
This one's for you dad! From your favorite daughter 💕

God bless the memory and legacy of the Man In Black, Mr Johnny Cash! 👍❤️👏👏
"A thing of beauty is a joy forever" Keats. This song is timeless just like the emotions it expresses.
I simply adore this wonderful song!

John and June performed at the Flynn Theater in Burlington, Vermont. A much smaller crowd that showed he cared for his fans more than he cared for the money
Here it is Sunday May 9, 2021 Mother's Day and like Cash I'm lonely as my beloved wife passed away July 1 of last year and miss her so.
