Such great videos, so helpful. The single wall single basket seems to generate a lot more pressure compared to the double basket using the same grind size. Is it normal that you would need to keep changing grind size between using single and double baskets? Annoying if so..

Do you have the same impression with a La Pavoni?
Given that it has a smaller group head+ portafilter to begin with, it's probably easier to pull "single shots" out of?

You're right about getting more extraction time with the double shot. I do that all the time. But for a single shot you can use a more coarse grind size. with single wall baskets the size of the coffee grounds determines extraction time.

I love the vids. Have the same machine. I use the single on 10g, 21g out. 20 sec. But really, depends on the beans. I use fresh beans from costa rica/honduras. And usually those are great. I live on coffee, the single dose keeps me in check. :)

Hello Hoon, I like your channel. A lot of good practical tips for Breville users. I am interested in the 3D dosing funnel that you showed for transferring coffee from the Niche cup to the 54mm Breville portafilter. Is the link that you give in the description correct? The dosing funnel that you get to looks somehow different.

I have the same machine. And can’t get ANY crema with the the regular basket. Only with the double/pressurized basket can I get a good shot on that machine. I’ve tried EVERY different way with the regular basket; all different grinds(I ended up on 8 as well) and tamping methods but no luck. So I’m over using the regular basket as well.

Hey Hoon, thanks for another great video. Have you noticed on your Barista Express that the water coming from the shower screen isn't very even? On mine, there are two or three spots where water is coming together into a stream rather than individual droplets evenly spaced? I've tried adjusting the tension on the shower screen screw to some success. I also clean it regularly.Maybe you could make a video about how changing the screw tension effects your water distribution on your machine?

Common misconception is that a single shot should take half the time which is incorrect. With a single shot you should still be aiming for 20-30 sec extraction time (remember that preinfusion is 10 seconds) so total time 30-40 sec.

    *Cons of using single basket*
    1. less coffee
    2. less flavour
    3. more cleaning required
    *Cons of double basket*
    1. more coffee (and caffeine)

I have occasionally got It right , but I agree it is like 10 times harder . And I think you didn’t say this in the video , but it seems like you need to grid coarser to have a chance .
The problem is that the puck is really angular and the margin between not enough in there and too much so the coffee is over compressed is too small .I was using a 90 plus grade coffee on it , running at 2 grind , flows and tastes perfect on the double . Run it on the single with same settings and tamp and fill level and it drips out and tastes horrid. I think maybe with the single shot you need to tamp really light on this machine , but it’s so small that is hard to do

I bought a barista express two days ago (in Europe the name is SOLIS and also SAGE). After a day full of experiments, I also came to the same conclusion regarding the use of the single non-presurised basket. The coffee is bitter in taste and it is a dirty thing to clean.
I have one more small question. Maybe this has already been covered in your channel: the factory setting for a single and double shot, are those time settings or does the Breville measures the extraction volume?
I very much like your channel full of practical tips for the novice like me. Thanks and stay blessed.

Hey Hoon, I see you have all the setup accessories for the espresso machine. But you're missing one crucial tool. The bottomless portafilter. Will you be consider getting one in the future?

    • @3rd-Wave_Rebel
      @3rd-Wave_Rebel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@HoonsCoffee I might getting one next month. The cool part of using the bottomless portafilter is that you get to see how the extraction is going on when it starts pouring. It's glorious to look at but bear in mind if your tamping or something messed up prior the extraction, it will spray everywhere and will get super messy but then again it's a sign that there's something wrong with the extraction. Hence it will reinforce you to fix it in order to get a better shot next time.

Never understood the point of a single shot ;)
I bought my Barista Express second hand and it only had the non-pressurised double basket and no cleaning kit. To clean the 3-way valve I discovered that a cheap bathroom basin rubber plug seals up the portafilter nicely (mine is the later machine that originally came with the non-perforated disc) and works just fine for the cleaning cycle.
