Why the need for intense stadium lighting all night?

I'm curious why is the City (ii.e. taxpayers) paying for insanely bright stadium lighting, in a residential area (Patton Park) when the park is closed? Seriously, this lighting is far too intense, especially to be glaring in our windows all night long.
it's not economically viable, nor ecologically responsible. Plus it's unhealthy light pollution.
