True.... but i have also asked people what hand as a form of trash talking so i can knock you out with either hand. Letting people pick how they get blasted in the face is rather enjoyable and humiliating for them.

Also you can see they grab around the shoulders a lot because with the pads and stuff on it makes you lose some range of motion and you can control there good hand better making them have to hit more with there off hand. its just an overall strategy that has been used over the years.

Okay, I know this video is 10 months old, but if you're still interested, here's a few things explained. First, what you heard in most of these videos wasn't trash talk. It was part of the oral tradition of the game. In hockey, you do not jump someone unless they've ran the goalie (literally. They skate into the goalie and hit him) or took a cheap shot on someone else, and then, you only jump them in the moment. There are other elements to this idea, but you're hearing here is two players that have bumped each other all game. They've traded shots, or perhaps, one of the guys is just coming into the league and is going to get tested. In that case, if it's a spur of the moment thing, you let your intentions be known by asking "Wanna go?" This doesn't always happen, however. If a guy cheap shots another player and gets off the ice, for instance, because his shift changes, he can fully expect a fight at some point in the game. When that happens, the other player simply comes up at some point before the faceoff says something. Or, during play, drops his gloves and squares up.
Second, when you're hearing "Good job" or "Good luck" after or before a fight, it's because the fight that's coming is one that is deemed necessary by the oral traditions of the game, but the players really have nothing against each other. Think of it as a bare-knuckle, no rules boxing match on ice. Perhaps, one of the guys drilled a smaller player on the other team. This type of thing also happens when a guy is coming into the league and just needs to be welcomed into the NHL. This is also where you get the question about the shoulder. It's not choreographed. It's just respect shown among players.
Third, that oft-used word. There's an underlying culture (or at least, there used to be) about being able to stand up for yourself in hockey. The only time this doesn't have to happen is if you're very small and very good. Then, someone else is designated as the Enforcer (again, used to be. They game's changed a lot and I don't know if this is still true). So, if you cheapshot someone, or, if you've bumped and pushed and grinded against another guy all night and tensions mount until he challenges you and you back down, you get your "toughness" questioned. Just how tough are NHL players? Greg Campbell broke his leg, but got back up and finished playing his shift before heading to the bench when the puck was cleared from the defensive zone. Ryan O'Byrne took a skate to the face that took 20+ stitches to close, but he finished his shift before going off the ice to get them. Rich Peverley went into cardiac arrest on the bench between his shifts. On the way to the hospital, he wakes up after getting his heart is shocked, and promptly requests to go back and get on the ice (they said no, of course). Chris Pronger took a slapshot to the heart that caused it to stop. He was revived. Four days later, he's playing again.

In that one fight where the player said “which shoulder?” - the opposing player he was about to fight had a shoulder injury that was known by most players so he was asking him to make sure he didn’t yank on it. There’s a lot of respect among those who fight in the nhl - commonly known as enforcers. Sometimes it’s definitely heated but for the most part the players are always respectful but chirpy.

3:24 Loads of fun facts about this guy: Georges Laraque.
At this point in his career, he was pretty much the undisputed heavyweight champ of hockey fights, so much so that most guys couldn’t get good hits on him and he could just wrestle anyone (ANYONE) to the ice whenever he wanted.
But he was also known as a good sport, and after this very video (where he says “good luck, man” prior to the fight) he got a new nickname as The Politer Fighter.
He also had a radio show for callers to ask him questions about romance called “Love Talk With Laraque”.
    This guy is a legend.

There should have been a mic in the helmet of Esa Tikkanen, a legendary Finnish player. He played alongside with Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri in Oilers. Hes trash talk was legendary so they invented a word for it "Tiki-Talk". Everyone in NHL knew how annoying it was to play against him because of his relentless colorful language that made them lose their composure and take "stupid" penalties, for losing their minds for it. He was the trash talk king that no one couldn´t handle. Trash talk and skill worth of five Stanley Cup victories xD

The number one cause of concussions is unprotected heads hitting the ice, followed by hits to the head. The league is fairly obviously trying to protect the players long term health.
The NHL along with the NFL are being sued for not taking steps to prevent concussions and"deliberately" putting the players at risk, the NHL's defense is like "we didn't know the long term consequences, nobody did at the time, we're now taking steps to avoid these injuries." the NFL's defense is like "durr... concussions don't real., they knew what they were signing up for.""
The NHL could have made fighting a 10 minute game misconduct, but the Board of Governors views fighting as part of the game, so it remains. A lot of research has been done in regards to the lasting effects of brain injuries in recent years and the NHL is moving in the right direction to both protect themselves (legally) and protect the players (physically).
As a hockey fan for 20 years I still like to see a good scrap where the boys square off and take off their helmets, but I understand why it's now a penalty.

The reason they ask each other if they want to fight is because if both parties don't drop their gloves the person who only drops their gloves get a 2 minute penalty. So the reason they ask for consent is to make sure the other player is going to drop their gloves.

Yes, they do ask each other to fight, and you have to take off your gloves if you want to fight, you can actually really hurt somebody if you punch somebody with those gloves on, Todd Bertuzzi punched somebody with his gloves on and it broke the dudes neck, but you got to love the sportsmanship between hockey players, most guys will say good fight right after they get done beating in each other faces and the word you were looking for at the end is Zamboni..Nice video.

8 out of 10 fights in hockey are actually gentlemanly in that they fight but then say good job and go their separate ways. The one part where the one asked the other "which shoulder?"... It was because the one was coming off of a bad shoulder injury and the guy didn't want to mess that up on him

There's an unwritten code for hockey fights, one part of which is that, if you need to spark your team, you try to find someone who's willing to go with you, and fight. You also don't see guys punch someone who's knocked out when he's on the way down. Now, obviously, there are fights where someone takes a cheap shot at you, or one of your better players, and those happen spur of the moment.

This wasn't even a great example of chirps/trash talk in the NHL, there's much harsher/funnier. And hockey players don't have to rely on trash talk cuz they can actually take care of things with physical play/hits/fights.

  • @JonesTonesGuitar

  • @robertsteeves8515
    @robertsteeves8515 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You get an extra 2 minute penalty for removing your own helmet during or before a fight which puts your team at a disadvantage after the fight. A player will try to rip off the other guy's helmet if possible to help out his own knuckles, especially if the other guy is wearing a visor. There are unwritten codes that most of the players follow; the dos and don'ts of hockey. In this video, Georges Laraque was one of the classiest guys when it came to fighting and Sean Avery was one of the biggest pariahs.

Most of the "polite" interactions here are a result of The Code. It's essentially an unwritten agreement between enforcers (respectful term for the fighters) that you won't cheap shot each other because fighters have a tough enough life already in the league. They protect each other as best they can by asking tings like "do you want to go, which shoulder is hurt" ect. If you want more info on it watch the documentary called Ice Guardians and it gives you a real idea of what these warriors went through on a nightly basis.

They grab eachothers shoulders when they fight so they wanted to know which shoulder they were grabbing

I believe that if basketball allowed fighting, the trash talk would really tone down

Taking off your own helmet in hockey is an automatic 2 minute minor added onto your 5 minute major for fighting, which may not seem like a lot but because the game of hockey is so fast paced leaving your team a man short for 7 minutes can have extremely bad consequences

Every team has an enforcer to keep it in check. They never take their helmets off. You can fall. Hit your head on the ice and die. It's happened once.

Sticks are through down, gloves are dropped, fists fly... Then teeth are spit out! And the spectators go nuts with excitement! :-O That's a "Zamboni" which you are trying to think of. --The big machine that smooths the ice. :-D Ice hockey on the amateur level is much more peaceful... We'd shovel a rink off the ice on the lake in our backyards, divide into teams of 3 or 4 persons apiece then play a good-natured game. Most often the roughest action you would see is if one of us would push another into the snow bank at the side of the rink. We were most often pretty gentle about it though... Because we knew darn well that it would be us who was thrown into the snow with the next play! :-D

Like how hockey guys can fight and immediately say good job. But I've seen way crazier trash talk in nhl , think the video kept it pretty mild.

They actually aren't allowed to take their helmets off to fight anymore. If it comes off during the fight that's fine. But they cant take it off beforehand.

Try watching longest plays from scrimmage or longest Homer's in MLB

Just to fill you guys in, fighting in hockey isn’t about hate or anger. 90% of the time it’s accountability for an action in a previous matchup between the two teams or if someone gets called up from our school league and is known as a tough guy they want to find out if the guys really tough! I’ve never had a scrap on the ice that I walked away from angry at the guy! It’s always a little tap on the back for dropping them!
