If I'm not mistaken it's quite common for referees to have a lot of playing history and background. People tend to see them as players who weren't good enough to play professionally, so they're very in tune with what's happening throughout the game, not just the rules.
I’m fairly certain that’s correct, with the exception of a handful of refs or linesmen who would’ve made pros if not for a bad injury or some sort of health issue. I had a buddy who was being scouted for the OHL until he shattered his elbow. Nowadays he’s more or less a full time referee at the Canada Games Centre in NS
They’re all excellent skaters and the vast majority played at some level, but it’s fairly rare for them to have made it to the NHL as a player. I found a list of about 10, but there are probably a few others.
My daughter plays pro hockey in Europe. Just last night she was at a club with a bunch of teammates, and they ran into one of the refs who officiates in the league. The ref joked with them about how much shit he gets from them and the coach, and then he bought them all a couple of rounds. As with all things hockey, words get thrown, sometimes fists, but it stays on the ice and there is mutual respect.
At 3:40, "is he faking it?" The penalty was for "embellishment," which means the other team did something relatively mild but the penalized player acted like it was severe. Referees don't like it when it's obvious a player is trying to deceive them. This video omitted the most famous recent incident. When the referee turned on his mic to announce the penalty, he first said "you can't do that." The way he said it made it funnier.
The kind of diving that happens all the time in footie gets you a 2 minute penalty in hockey. I used to referee, and we used to call it unsportsmanlike conduct, but then they started calling it what it was: embellishment.
I grew up in a small town, population 500 or so, in Canada. Every kid with the exception of 2 or 3 (for whatever reason) skated. Most of us played organized hockey. The local arena/skating rink was the nerve center of the town from the moment the ice was ready in the fall till it started getting nice outside in the spring and the ice melted. At age 14 or so, I began to referee.
The pushing of the player into the penalty box… that’s called “policing the game” the ORIGINAL fuck around and find out, love it! Always have, always will! LOVE from Idaho yall 🫶🏽🙏🏾
The doing it all while skating is the part that’s hard to explain. I’ve been playing for 30 years, since I was 4, and I think about skating the same amount I think about walking, it definitely takes longer than 4 weeks, I’m more confident I won’t fall on skates than on feet
I played hockey with Fredrick L’Ecuyer who became an NHL ref in 2010. He would swing by to play on our beer league team in NC when he had some time. Dude was a great skater with a wicked shot. I doubt there’s one out there that didn’t play some form before becoming a ref.
I played hockey throughout my youth. There is a very real thing in games with refs and players chirping each other back and forth. A couple of the funniest sh!t talkers Ive ever met were hockey refs in Canada and Minnesota.
When asked what my favorite sport is, I always answer hockey! In every other sport, if you punch another player in the face, you get ejected, and, possibly suspended. In Hockey? Well, even if you consider it an "suspension", it is only for 5 minutes! Aside from that the speed and creativity of the game is breathtaking.
Nah McGeough didn’t get in trouble for throwing Darcy Tucker into the box… honestly there’s plenty of people that would have lined up to throw Darcy Tucker into the box.
The NHL Playoffs just started, you should react to some highlights. Last night on its own was one of the best saves in playoff history. There's some amazing rivalry series going on, cheers
That's one reason I love hockey. You can hear a lot of that going on. Loved that video. Back in the 60's our city had an International Hockey League team. The refs , and linesmen, had to be some strong tough guys. Those were wild games.
That one with the ref throwing tucker into the box was back in the 00s that guy he threw darcy tucker was a scrappy little dude that could also play extremely well. The ref didnt get in trouble. Its a physical sport and the refs move people all the time.
You guys have a tough no nonsense sport too. Rugby. Its not as popular here as England but its slowly but surely getting more and more popular. Rugby players and Hockey players are alot alike when it comes to attitude.
I like that you guys said, not everybody can do it( play hockey). One thing is, hockey is super expensive to play. From league fees, equipment, and ice time.
A guy I played Jr. College hockey with made it to the NHL as a ref. He was a great player, but plateaued at a minor league level. Ref'd AHL & NHL for about 25 years.
If you want to see a pissed off referee, January 18th, 2014, after two seconds of play, the referee doled out 152 minutes in penalties in a Calgary/Vancouver game. With game misconducts added to penalties, both teams finished the game with 14 skaters each. It's on TH-cam.
It would be awesome if someone in england had a NHL franchise. The big problem is traveling to north america and playing in canada and the states. But maybe one day that is something that can be considered. Many players in the NHL come from europe and yall have great access to a lot of great players over there.
This is how you can understand the complexity of skating at a high level for hockey. Hockey has been around since the 1800's, skating has been around since who knows. To this day coaches, instructors, etc are still finding/creating new and more efficient ways to improve an individuals skating. Like their agility, speed, balance, creativity. Tell me if that happens with running. Sure there are techniques and such, but its mostly all been figured out. You just need someone that is physically gifted and you can teach them the same techniques that you were taught and they could be competing at a high level. Skating is still to this day changing and improving. These younger kids speed is so next level compared to the last generation and you can quite literally see it in their form when they essentially "Full Sprint". Their entire form and technique in a full sprint is different. There is a cool video that does a breakdown analysis on it, it's a good watch. That is why when "The most difficult sport" is brought up for discussion, hockey is always in the top 5, and a debate for 1 or 2.
The dude who manhandled that player definitely would not get fired, have no worries. Sometimes when you’ve got 10 giant meat heads trying to kill each other at the same time, you have no choice but to (literally) toss somebody lol
I'd love to see your reaction to "Brawl in Hockeytown" (Fightnight at the Joe). It's one of my greatest memories of Hockey and shows how the players regulate bad apples within the game. There are longer recaps where they show the importance of that game to a rivalry for the ages. If you're new to Hockey will also show different the game is today Vs. 20+ yrs ago.
Honestly I’d rather a ref tell me to F off right back than to act like a teacher. I’m not sure how many penalties I got as a kid for mouthing off to the ref though
I’ve always thought hockey was the best sport because these guys never seem to lose their love for the game. It’s no nonsense. I’m playing to win and you better not hurt one of my teammates or were going to get you back on the next play. The refs don’t take any crap off of the players either. And you have to have talent to play this game. The movie Slap Shot (1977 with Paul Newman) is funny. You two should watch it.
Mick Magoo,, the ref who threw the dude into the box, was not disciplined for that incident. I seem to recall he was widely praised, cuz the dude he threw was being a total D hole the whole way to the box. He was the biggest damn ref I've ever seen in any sport. And he was on skates to boot.
I'm late posting, but I haven't seen you react to NHL: Refs Mic'd Up. Did I miss something? If you liked this video, you'll really like NHL: Refs Mic'd Up.
Refs in any pro sport are under the most pressure of any major part of the game. A player who is objectively great will never lack for opportunity, but refs are always being intimidated with the will of team owners, players, and fans to distort how they call. They have no leverage if they're targeted. It's the main way that pro sports are still corrupted by the gambling industry.
And if you want to see the weakest officials in all of sports just look at Major League baseball........ It didn't used to be that way either. Back in the day there were epic screaming matches between umpires and managers with no ejections. You used to not get ejected unless you made contact with the umpire or just wouldn't stop screaming. Now they literally eject you for nothing. Their feelings are so fragile and for some reason they think everyone buys tickets to go see them. Hockey is one of the few real men's sports left.
If I'm not mistaken it's quite common for referees to have a lot of playing history and background. People tend to see them as players who weren't good enough to play professionally, so they're very in tune with what's happening throughout the game, not just the rules.

Yup, the opposite mindset that footie has with diving.
Yeah I was about to say, that one is my favorite "you can't do that" lol.
The kind of diving that happens all the time in footie gets you a 2 minute penalty in hockey. I used to referee, and we used to call it unsportsmanlike conduct, but then they started calling it what it was: embellishment.

Truly a great moment in sports history😂
The pushing of the player into the penalty box… that’s called “policing the game” the ORIGINAL fuck around and find out, love it! Always have, always will! LOVE from Idaho yall 🫶🏽🙏🏾
I appreciate the reaction guys!
Hey, appreciate your compilations bud!
Nice to see some blokes over the pond enjoying the game.
Wes McCauley and Paul Stewart are two examples of many refs who were drafted and/or played in the professional ranks and even the NHL.
The doing it all while skating is the part that’s hard to explain. I’ve been playing for 30 years, since I was 4, and I think about skating the same amount I think about walking, it definitely takes longer than 4 weeks, I’m more confident I won’t fall on skates than on feet

Guys, love your hockey reactions! Please keep them coming, it IS the best sport out there!
The league you guys have in the U.K reminds me of old-time smash mouthed hockey. It's awesome people in North America need to watch it.
Mike Rupp has a great Ref story from when he was playing. It's worth a watch.
You and Aiden should really watch the movie "Slap Shot." Its an older movie, but it really puts semi-pro hockey into perspective.
I was just coming to post the same thing. If they haven't seen it, they need to. Like, NEED TO!
A favorite among hockey players. Fun movie.
They brought their toys
hockey is the best sport to see live, especially if you are down near the glass and can hear them all talking

We second this idea!
That's one reason I love hockey. You can hear a lot of that going on. Loved that video. Back in the 60's our city had an International Hockey League team. The refs , and linesmen, had to be some strong tough guys. Those were wild games.

I wish there was a rated R feed i could pay for where the mics were on the entire game.
I think this proves that Hockey is a gentleman's sport.
love these nhl reactions!
Big Jimmy Carr, the Linesman 😂
5:58 that moment when your mom comes into your room after she put you there to keep your mouth shut....
watch the refs in a game. you gotta be a crazy kind of old man to want to be trapped in that rink with just a tiny ledge to sit on

You never want to have your head down! You can get your head taken off lol

You ought to watch the Canadian series about hockey called "Shoresy".
The dude who manhandled that player definitely would not get fired, have no worries. Sometimes when you’ve got 10 giant meat heads trying to kill each other at the same time, you have no choice but to (literally) toss somebody lol
McGeough wasn’t the greatest ref, but Tucker is a player that would’ve earned it
@@joelmacdonald6994 without a doubt hahaha
Yeah the “embellishment” penalty is because unlike soccer/footie, we penalize and don’t promote taking dives to get a call lll
I'd love to see your reaction to "Brawl in Hockeytown" (Fightnight at the Joe). It's one of my greatest memories of Hockey and shows how the players regulate bad apples within the game. There are longer recaps where they show the importance of that game to a rivalry for the ages.

Gotta be the best sport ever 💯
Honestly I’d rather a ref tell me to F off right back than to act like a teacher. I’m not sure how many penalties I got as a kid for mouthing off to the ref though
You should react to Connor Bedards rookie highlights! Dude was electric this year
There is no sport that have more intense playoffs than the NHL. A game 7 in the play-offs, no matter who plays, is bound to be must see tv.
The Vancouver canucks led Nashville 3 to 1 after an epic failure in the thrid 🍁
The puck gets shot at refs (not deliberately) at 100mph with a rubber disk as hard as a cricket ball.
More hockey videos please!!!
Could you react to Connor bedard best rookie NHL highlights?
This was so great 🥊
That was great!
8:12 and on is just awesome 😂
Heyo from Philly! 🧡🤍🖤

More hockey, please.
It's best when the refs have a Canadian accent as they tell you to F off.
React to the Nuggets vs Lakers Game 2, crazy ending from being down by 20 points
Just the last 3 minutes of the game alone is a good reaction
Why else do you think Jimmy Carr has had that much work done on his face?
I love when people not from North America fall in love with hockey.
react to AHL referee wears go pro you’ll love it
Mick Magoo,, the ref who threw the dude into the box, was not disciplined for that incident. I seem to recall he was widely praised, cuz the dude he threw was being a total D hole the whole way to the box. He was the biggest damn ref I've ever seen in any sport. And he was on skates to boot.
McGeough was built like a mack truck. lol
Hockey is a man's sport, pure and simple.
Indeed! And football is for mutant monsters.
I'm late posting, but I haven't seen you react to NHL: Refs Mic'd Up. Did I miss something? If you liked this video, you'll really like NHL: Refs Mic'd Up.
Let’s go Canes!
The Texas Rangers are basically a Dallas Team!
The Texas Rangers just won the world series, i wouldn't say its been awhile since Dallas has won anything
Love the channel boys. Let's Go Rangers!!!
You guys should react to "Meet the 2024 Detroit Lions International Fan of the Year: Ryan Fardon" he's British. 🦁💙
Flordia panthers
This is why I always have said NHL refs are the best you'll find, along with rugby and some of the NFL refs.
That's what the Premier League needs, some refs who'll tell the players to stfu with all the whining they do
NHL refs don’t put up with nothing 😂😂
Hockey is the BEST!!!
Aiden please I hope you didn't jinx my Stars.

Bruins!
Dallas Stars!!!!!!!!!! What an answer!!!! Let's Go!!!!!
Brutes. Love hockey, its the best. The players and refs and everyone involved are just cut from a different cloth.
Nah...Canucks are going to beat Nashville 😊
Boston Bruins will win it.
Sure we have the NHL AND NBA AND NFL, but you guys the European Football, we get your washed up players who come over to the MLS. So sad
NHL referees take a lot of shit, so when they had enough the give it
