This color component separation method, allows you to create VERY powerful masks that allow you to enhance your image in ways you never thought possible!
One common technique is to use a "Saturation Mask" to target the saturation in your photo and selectively enhance the colors with an Adjustment Layer.

It's a nice introduction of HSB filter and the potential on mask...
But I think it need another tutorials that go deeper into different use of it, with different image and not only with Hue saturation slider.
This is amazing. Now I really got an idea on how to teach students the difference between HSB (HSV) and HSL with a more intuitive way as a teaching assistant :)

Great tutorial. Because of the details (theory) you went through it was busy. But once I only focus on the method a light bulb when off. It's all about control. I also created a duplicate image and applied the vibrancy effect only and then compared the two methods/results up close and you can tell which gives the cleanest adjustment.

Excellent...I had seen another YT video on saturation masks where the commentator said to command-click on "the green channel" to create the mask. Just so happened that he was trying to saturate the greens in his image. I mistakenly believed that was why he said what he did. Now...with your explanation, I understand that the R, G, and B channels are remapped to H, S, and B (or L) properties, so the G channel is mapped to the S property. Now I get it! Thanks. This should be very useful for my wildlife and landscape photos.

at @16:47 when selecting the Green channel you are actually selecting the Green channel not the Saturation channel for your example. You forgot to turn on the HSB layer before making the selection. So all the effects are just targeting the brightness, or shadow values when you inverted it, of the green channel.

Lo que pasó en ese caso, es que seleccionó toda la información de color no verde en la imagen para manejar la saturación de los demás canales (sin alternar el verde de la imagen) que ya la imagen de por sí tiene bastante y es probable que no desee saturar más los verdes.

This is a perfect example of why you get different RGB values when you change your curve layers to luminosity/normal mode when you dodge and burn. Jesus this is fantastic!!! Can't believe I didn't know about this plugin.

Thanks, once again, Jesùs, for another ENLIGHTENING tutorial! Now I am wondering: Under what conditions might we use the HUE channel to make a layer mask?
to separate colors, of course
One example would be if you want to target a specific color to either change it or enhance it. Hue is the base color, so maybe you have a photo with some green caused by a green screen. You could use the Hue channel to look for the green hues and target them. so you could figure out and select which shades of gray are green. then make a mask of them and paint over them or apply and adjustment layer. I hope that made sense!

Got it....but is there a way to know if any color sat adjustment made is too much and there are over-saturated pixels? I can tell somewhat of colors are over-run and lost the color variation...but if that does not occur, there still could be parts of an image with too much saturation. How much is too much saturation?
Great tut, but the plugin link gives me a page not found message. Also, where in figma is that color picker?
Fixed the link! Figma is an online design app. Not related to Photoshop. I just used it because it has an HSB and HSL color picker.
@@PhotoshopTrainingChannelIt would be helpful to put up a direct link since the Figma interface is completely unintuitive. Talk of "property panel" which cannot be found anywhere.....

I did some tests with the brightness channel (blue) , made a mask, apply it on the layer and add a brightness adjustment layer on top of it and clip it to the layer below
Now I adjust just the brightest parts of the image, you should have added that too to your video.
There's about two hours worth of stuff I could have added. I actually had to remove about 15 minutes of stuff just because it became too long and too technical. But what you describe is a great way of using the technique! Thanks for the comment!

Do you maby know what a mat type image is and how to recreate a normall image to that colour.
I extracted the plugin into Photoshop CS6 plugin folder. However the plugin does not show up in the filter drop down list. ( I had closed Photoshop before doing the download. Thanks for your help

I was literally having an HSP when this video popped up in my TH-cam stream
0:54 It is instructive to note that these are called alpha channels. They are EXTREMELY useful for advanced users. I believe they have been around since Ps 4. Layers were introduced way back in Ps 3 ... also, I believe that layer masks were introduced in v4. This was a long, long time ago (1999)
Any other method to get this out..

How close is the color adjustments in camera raw compared to this? I mean, this was not easy to grasp :)
What would the difference between using this method and simply using the Vibrance slider be? I feel the Vibrance control protects more of those less saturated areas compared to your method.

you load green channel instead of what you said.
Can someone help me? I'm using Photoshop 2020 and my HSB color panel isnt not working as it should. Until yesterday was fine, I picked up any color at the H bar, move the S arrow trought the % bar and get the color transition at the B, but now it is stuck at the red HSB color and I cannot preview the saturation and brithness it used to show earlier. I tried to reset the panel, reset the Photoshop and got nothing. Any clues?
I copy it into plug-ins, but it does not appear in various, please help me
Guy Gowan has been teaching this stuff for years. He uses HSL as an alternative to Hue and Saturation. He was also showing the importance of using channels as masks over a decade ago. Now you see all these videos purporting to have the magic answer, everyone going on about 'luminosity' masks like it's a new discovery.
I know what you mean. Sometimes, when I read some comments I find myself thinking "you should watch some of the old Natalia Taffarel's content, you'd be surprised"
But It is normal that people who discover this for the first time think it's something new. It is really new for them.
And Jesus Ramirez is doing an incredibly good job. He works hard, likes teaching and understands social media.
